The interview was conducted at Edward Dugmore's home in New York by Tram Combs for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview ED: EDWARD DUGMORE MD: EDIE DUGMORE [MRS. DUGMORE] TC: TRAM COMBS Tape 1, Side A (45-minute tape sides) TC: This is an interview for the Archives of American Art, conducted by Tram Combs for the Archives with Edward Dugmore. There will be three voices on the tape. This is Tram Combs speaking. ED: This is Edward Dugmore. MD: And this is Edie Dugmore. TC: Edie is Mrs. Dugmore. She is sitting in on the interview for information that doesn’t come immediately to mind, and any disagreements about [our accuracy]. [all chuckle] Ed, tell us about your background, your family. ED: Okay, I was born in 1915. I have two brothers, approximately four years apart. Older brother and a younger brother. TC: Their names? ED: There’s Leonard, and then myself, and then Stanley is the youngest. My father came over from England, and my mother, and he was a photographer. TC: With your mother? MD: No. ED: No, he didn’t do that; that’s right. -
Unearthing Mesoamerican Antiquity in the Art of the United States, 1839-1893
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE OLD NEW WORLD: UNEARTHING MESOAMERICAN ANTIQUITY IN THE ART OF THE UNITED STATES, 1839-1893 Angela Susan George, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Professor Sally M. Promey Department of Art History and Archaeology Through a series of case studies, this dissertation examines how and why artists in the United States imagined Mesoamerican antiquity between 1839 and 1893. The artists whose work I consider most closely include Frederick Catherwood, Peter F. Rothermel, Emanuel Leutze, George Martin Ottinger, and George de Forest Brush; works by other artists play supporting roles or amplify the observations made in this project. The decades in which I situate my study were key in the development of the United States’ geographic borders and national identity as well as in the foundation of archaeological investigation in Mesoamerica. During the period under question, ancient Mesoamerica provided a “usable past” for many in the United States. Since little was known of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region, Mesoamerican antiquity served as a palimpsest upon which a number of narratives could be written. As this dissertation reveals, ancient Mesoamerica resonated differently with various individuals and groups in the United States. The Mesoamerica that existed in the U.S. imagination was at once savage, exotic, advanced, and primitive, inhabited by a population assigned a similarly disparate and ultimately contradictory range of traits. Representations of Mesoamerica were not fixed but eminently variable, shaped to serve the exigencies of many historical moments. As such, these images reveal as much about the nineteenth-century United States as they do about the people and places depicted. -

WALLY FINDLAY GALLERIES 124 East 57th Street, New York, NY (212) 421 5390 [email protected] Aïzpiri Paul Aïzpiri (b. 1919) was born in Paris on May 14, 1919. Aïzpiri entered l’École Bulle to learn antique restoration, after his father insisted that he first learn a trade as a means of assuring his livelihood. After the course he entered the Beaux-Arts to study painting. Aïzpiri was certainly encouraged as a young painter in his early 20’s, during somber war-torn France, exhibiting amongst the painters of l’École Pont-Aven and the Nabis. He became a member of the Salon d’Automne in 1945, won Third Prize at the Salon de Moins de Trente Ans, of which he was a founding member and later showed at the Salon “Les Peintres Témoin de leur Temps”. In 1948, Aïzpiri won the Prix Corsica which allowed him to go to Marseilles. His stay there so impressed him, that he declared it was a turning point of his art. Not only did he find a whole new world to paint which was far different subjectively from any life he had known in Paris, but also a new world of color. -

Clementine Reuben Hunter, a self-taught African-American folk artist, was born at Hidden Hill, a cotton plantation close to Cloutierville, Louisiana. When she was 14 she moved to the Melrose Plantation in Cane River County. She is often referred to as "the black Grandma Moses." Her works in gouache are rare. The last auction record of her work in that medium that we could find was "Untitled," sold for $3,000 at Sotheby's New York, 12/19/2003, lot 1029. Yet, women have been noticeably absent from the historical record of the RCMP, allowing the figure of the heroic male Mountie to continue his dominance in official, academic, and popular histories. Central to these discourses has been the male police body which has been positioned as the only body capable of enforcing the law in Canada. -
Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College
A Lasting Imprint Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College Movement and music—both time-based activities—can be difficult to express in static media such as painting, drawing, and photography, yet many visual artists feel called to explore them. Some are driven to devise new techniques or new combinations of media in order to capture or suggest movement. Similarly, some visual artists utilize elements found in music—rhythms, patterns, repetitions, and variations—to endow their compositions with new expressive potency. In few places did movement, music, visual arts, and myriad other disciplines intermingle with such profound effect as they did at Black Mountain College (BMC), an experiment in higher education in the mountains of Western North Carolina that existed from 1933 to 1957. For many artists, their introduction to interdisciplinarity at the college resulted in a continued curiosity around those ideas throughout their careers. The works in the exhibition, selected from the Asheville Art Museum’s Black Mountain College Collection, highlight approaches to rendering a lasting imprint of the ephemeral. Artists such as Barbara Morgan and Clemens Kalischer seek to capture the motion of the human form, evoking a sense of elongated or contracted muscles, or of limbs moving through space. Others, like Lorna Blaine Halper or Sewell Sillman, approach the challenge through abstraction, foregoing representation yet communicating an atmosphere of dynamic change. Marianne Preger-Simon’s drawings of her fellow dancers at BMC from summer 1953 are not only portraits but also a dance of pencil on paper, created in the spirit of BMC professor Josef Albers’s line studies as she simultaneously worked with choreographer Merce Cunningham. -
