ABSTRACT (maximum 200 words) This dissertation reports the development of an autonomous distributed control algorithm for multiple spacecraft during close proximity operations, including rendezvous and docking. The proposed control algorithm combines the efficiency of Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and robust collision avoidance capability of Artificial Potential Function method (APF). The LQR control effort serves as attractive force toward goal positions, while the APF-based repulsive functions provide collision avoidance for obstacles. The combination of the LQR and APF multiple spacecraft close proximity control algorithms yielded promising results as demonstrated by the simulations reported in this dissertation. The multiple spacecraft close proximity control algorithm was developed, refined, and thoroughly simulated using high fidelity six DOF spacecraft models. A versatile multiple spacecraft model validation and simulation visualization technique using a MATLAB-STK (Satellite Tool Kit) interface was created to propagate spacecraft models, compare against STK generated ephemeris, and animate for analysis. The MATLAB-STK interface efficacy was demonstrated during the evaluation and analysis of the innovative control algorithm. Additionally, the LQR/APF multiple spacecraft control algorithm was thoroughly analyzed via Monte-Carlo simulations to validate its stability and robustness. Finally, the LQR/APF multiple spacecraft control algorithm was evaluated by virtual hardware-in-the-loop implementation at the NPS Spacecraft Robotics Laboratory. 14. The proposed control algorithm combines the efficiency of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the robust collision avoidance capability of the Artificial Potential Function (APF) method. The LQR control effort serves as the attractive force toward goal positions, while the APF-based repulsive functions provide collision avoidance for both fixed and moving obstacles. The combination of the LQR and APF control logics, referred to as the LQR/APF control algorithm, yielded promising results as demonstrated by the numerous multiple spacecraft maneuver simulations reported in this dissertation. In order to validate the proposed control approach, a multiple spacecraft model validation and visualization technique was developed using a versatile MATLAB- Satellite Toll Kit (STK) interface to propagate the spacecraft models, compare against STK generated ephemeris, and animate for analysis. The MATLAB-STK interface efficacy was demonstrated during the evaluation and analysis of the innovative LQR/APF multiple spacecraft control algorithm. The LQR/APF multiple spacecraft close proximity control algorithm was developed, refined, and thoroughly simulated using high fidelity six Degree of Freedom (DOF) spacecraft models. The LQR/APF control algorithm was further evaluated by virtual hardware-in-the-loop implementation at the NPS Spacecraft Robotics Laboratory.     Closed-Form Optimal Impulsive Control of Spacecraft Relative Motion Using Reachable Set Theory Michelle Chernick ∗ and Simone D’Amico † Stanford University, Stanford, California, 94305 This paper addresses the spacecraft relative orbit reconfiguration problem of minimizing the delta-v cost of impulsive control actions while achieving a desired state in fixed time. The problem is posed in relative orbit element (ROE) space, which yields insight into relative motion geometry and allows for the straightforward inclusion of perturbations in linear time- variant form. Reachable set theory is used to translate the cost-minimization problem into a geometric path-planning problem and formulate the reachable delta-v minimum, a new metric to assess optimality and quantify reachability of a maneuver scheme. Next, this paper presents a methodology to compute maneuver schemes that meet this new optimality criteria and achieve a prescribed reconfiguration. Though the methodology is applicable to any linear time-variant system, this paper leverages a state representation in ROE to derive new globally optimal maneuver schemes in orbits of arbitrary eccentricity. The methodology is also used to generate quantifiably sub-optimal solutions when the optimal solutions are unreachable. Further, this paper determines the mathematical impact of uncertainties on achieving the desired end state and provides a geometric visualization of those effects on the reachable set. The proposed algorithms are tested in realistic reconfiguration scenarios and validated in a high-fidelity simulation environment. I. Several cases of satellites and autonomous space- craft in the space rendezvous mission are simulated regarding different propagation models to demonstrate the performance of the application in space mission analysis, ground track visualization and trajectory optimization. Hansen NASA History Office Code Z NASA Headquarters Washington DC 20546 MONOGRAPHS IN AEROSPACE HISTORY SERIES #4 December 1995 Foreword One of the most critical technical decisions made during the conduct of Project Apollo was the method of flying to the Moon, landing on the surface, and returning to Earth. Within NASA during this debate, several modes emerged. The one eventually chosen was lunar-orbit rendezvous (LOR), a proposal to send the entire lunar spacecraft up in one launch. It would head to the Moon, enter into orbit, and dispatch a small lander to the lunar surface. It was the simplest of the various methods, both in terms of development and operational costs, but it was risky. Because rendezvous would take place in lunar, instead of Earth, orbit, there was no room for error or the crew could not get home. Moreover, some of the trickiest course corrections and maneuvers had to be done after the spacecraft had been committed to a circumlunar flight. Between the time of NASA's conceptualization of the lunar landing program and the decision in favor of LOR in 1962, a debate raged among the advocates of the various methods. John C. Houbolt, an engineer at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, was one of the most vocal of those supporting LOR and his campaign in 1961 and 1962 helped shape the deliberations in a fundamental way.

The whole variation of the relative orbit is stepwise achieved through intermediate configurations, so that passive safety and delta-v consumption minimisation are pursued. The description of the relative motion is accomplished in terms of relative orbital elements and the reconfiguration plan takes into account mean effects due to the Earth oblateness coefficient and differential drag. Manoeuvres consist of sets of triple tangential impulses and a single out-of-plane burn to establish each intermediate configuration. They are scheduled in time intervals compliant with the user-defined permissible time control windows.
