W W W . T R A N S P A R E N C Y C A N A D A . C A WE ARE THE CANADIAN CHAPTER OF THE WORLD'S LEADING NON- GOVERNMENTAL ANTI-CORRUPTION ORGANIZATION, TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL You might think that in a country like Canada corruption and opacity in business and government are isolated occurrences. But Transparency International Canada’s research shows that it’s not the case. And yes, Canada may fare well on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, but we can’t afford to be complacent. We must continue to demand increased transparency and accountability from our institutions. As part of a global movement that is dedicated to fighting corruption and fostering greater transparency in government, business and civil society, Transparency International Canada works daily SUSAN CÔTÉ-FREEMAN to contribute to this agenda. Corruption is recognized as a cross-cutting challenge to some of our most urgent societal problems, including environmental degradation, global inequality, human rights violations, and conflict.

Canada enjoys a reputation as a clean country at home and abroad. However, Canada is not a neutral actor, nor is it free from corrupt actions.

The country has become a choice destination for dirty money. Criminals, kleptocrats and tax dodgers snow wash illicit gains through Canadian real estate while ordinary Canadians are priced out of the housing market.

Law enforcement, banks, and journalists can’t track dirty money due to Canada's lax laws regulating anonymous companies and trusts. Canada ranked at the bottom of the list of G20 countries in meeting obligations for beneficial ownership transparency in the recent Transparency International report on beneficial ownership.

There are significant hurdles to ensuring Canadian companies can compete in a fair business climate and that corrupt actors will be brought to justice. Only four foreign convictions have been secured under the Corruption of Foreign and Public Officials Act in the past decade.

To curb corruption, TI Canada works to identify the transparency and accountability challenges facing Canada and offer concrete solutions to address them.
