FACT SHEET The PGA of America’s 40th Anniversary in Palm Beach County 1965 • The PGA of America’s national headquarters moves from Dunedin to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on March 17th. • The PGA of America holds its 49th Annual Meeting at the Palm Beach Towers Hotel in Palm Beach. 1966 • Robert Creasy is hired as Executive Director effective January 1. • Freddie Haas Jr. becomes the only player not to shoot over par in any round on the East Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, at the PGA Seniors’ Championship. • The PGA of America holds its 50th Annual Meeting at the Palm Beach Towers Hotel in Palm Beach. 1967 • Sam Snead wins the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, by nine shots over Bob Hamilton. • The PGA of America holds its 51st Annual Meeting at the Palm Beach Towers Hotel in Palm Beach. 1968 • Chandler Harper of Portsmouth, Va., wins the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, by four strokes over defending Champion Sam Snead. • The PGA of America holds its 52nd Annual Meeting at the Palm Beach Towers Hotel in Palm Beach. 1969 • In his first year of eligibility, Tommy Bolt wins the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. 1970 • The PGA Credit Union is established. • Sam Snead captures his fourth PGA Seniors’ Championship with a 2-over-par 290 at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 54th Annual Meeting at the Palm Beach Towers Hotel in Palm Beach. 1971 • The PGA Championship makes a Florida debut in February at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. North Palm Beach resident Jack Nicklaus becomes the first professional to win the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship twice. • Julius Boros of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., wins the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, and is the only player under par throughout the Championship. • The PGA of America holds its 55th Annual Meeting at the Colonnades Beach Hotel in Palm Beach Shores. 1972 • Coming from behind in the final round, Sam Snead reclaims the PGA Seniors’ Championship title by finishing one stroke ahead of Tommy Bolt at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. Page 1 of 7 FACT SHEET The PGA of America’s 40th Anniversary in Palm Beach County 1973 • PGA of America moves its offices to Lake Park, Fla. • Sam Snead captures the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, ahead of second place finisher, Julius Boros, who was fifteen strokes behind. 1976 • The PGA of America holds its 60th Annual Meeting at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. 1977 • Contract is signed with Llwyd Ecclestone to create PGA National Resort complex in Palm Beach Gardens. 1980 • The Haig Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, serves as host of the fifth annual Junior PGA Championship, one of the country’s premier junior events. Tracy Phillips of Tulsa, Okla., and Heather Farr of Phoenix, Ariz., capture the respective boys’ and girls’ titles. The Champion Course begins a tradition of hosting the event for 19 of the next 21 years. • The PGA of America holds its 64th Annual Meeting at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. 1981 • A new 30,000-square-foot PGA of America National Headquarters is dedicated at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. • Golf legend Jack Nicklaus is named Captain of the 1983 U.S. Ryder Cup Team at PGA of America National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • Billy Andrade of Bristol, R.I., and Cathy Johnston of Enfield, N.C., capture Junior PGA Championship titles on The Haig Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 65th Annual Meeting at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. 1982 • Don January wins his second PGA Seniors' Championship on the Champion Course at the new PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • Billy Mayfair and close friend, Heather Farr, both of Phoenix, Ariz., sweep the respective boys’ and girls’ titles on the Champion Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. 1983 • Led by Captain Jack Nicklaus of North Palm Beach, the United States edges Europe, 14½ to 13½, in a thrilling conclusion to the 25th Ryder Cup Matches at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens. • Lee Trevino is named Captain of the 1985 United States Ryder Cup Team at PGA National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • Floridians Michael Bradley of Sanibel and Tracy Kerdyk of Coral Gables score a sweep in the Junior PGA Championship on The Champion Course at PGA Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. Page 2 of 7 FACT SHEET The PGA of America’s 40th Anniversary in Palm Beach County 1984 • Arnold Palmer fires a course and tournament record 9-under-par 63 in the second round of the 45th PGA Seniors’ Championship to capture the title at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • Peter Thomson of Australia, makes his first appearance in the 46th PGA Seniors’ Championship, and has his biggest payday, claiming the $40,000 winner’s check. • David Toms of Bossier City, La., and Clare Dolan of Gaithersburg, Md., win the respective boys’ and girls’ titles in the Junior PGA Championship on the Champion Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. 1985 • Jack Nicklaus is named for a second time to serve as United States Ryder Cup Captain at PGA National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • Steve Termeer of Conroe, Texas, and Jean Zedlitz of Pleasanton, Calif., capture the respective boys’ and girls’ titles in the Junior PGA Championship on The Haig Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 69th Annual Meeting at PGA Sheraton Hotel in Palm Beach Gardens. 1986 • South African Gary Player becomes the second foreigner in a row to claim the PGA Seniors’ Championship title at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, outdistancing Lee Elder by two with a 7-under-par 281. • Brian Montgomery of Bristow, Okla., and Adele Moore of Dallas, Texas, win the respective boys’ and girls’ titles in the Junior PGA Championship on the Champion Course at PGA Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. 1987 • PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, hosts the PGA Championship with Larry Nelson capturing the title. • Jim Awtrey is named acting executive director, and then confirmed as executive director. • Chi Chi Rodriguez trailed third-round leader Dale Douglass by six strokes, but fired a final round 6- under-par 67 to capture the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • Raymond Floyd is named United States Ryder Cup Captain at PGA National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • Jeff Manson of Long Beach, Calif., and Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., win the respective boys’ and girls’ titles in the Junior PGA Championship on the Champion Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 71st Annual Meeting at PGA Sheraton Hotel in Palm Beach Gardens. 1988 • Gary Player earns his second PGA Seniors’ Championship trophy with a 4-under-par 284 at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. Bobby Collins of Atlantis, Fla., and Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., win the respective boys’ and girls’ titles on The Haig Course. • Dave Stockton is named the United States Ryder Cup Captain at PGA National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 73rd Annual Meeting at PGA Sheraton Hotel in Palm Beach Gardens. 1990 • A new wing adds 10,000 square feet to the PGA of America National Headquarters. • With a closing course record 63, Chris Couch of North Lauderdale, Fla., defeats Tiger Woods of Cypress, Calif., by 10 strokes to win the Junior PGA Championship at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens. Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., captures a record third girls’ title. • With one of the strongest fields ever assembled for the senior golf, Gary Player coasts to his third PGA Seniors’ Championship title at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. 1991 • The PGA of America celebrates its 75th anniversary with 19,932 members and 41 Sections. • Jack Nicklaus led from start to finish to win the PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. • Tom Watson is named the United States Ryder Cup Captain at PGA National Headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens. • David Dawley of Chandler, Okla., and Julie Brand of Alder Creek, N.Y., win the respective boys’ and girls’ titles in the Junior PGA Championship at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens. • The PGA of America holds its 75th Annual Meeting at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. 1992 • The 52-year-old Lee Trevino captures his first PGA Seniors’ Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, and one stroke ahead of Mike Hill.
