4 THE FORKS TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY e are back! The Forks Township Historical Society has resumed its monthly Wmeetings as of May 24, 2021. At our first meeting of 2021, we were visited by members of the Frace family (Samantha, James and Larry) who trace their heritage to Forks Township and shared their ancestry with us. Michael Frace purchase land from the Estate of William Penn and was the first owner of the Frace homestead, located along Frost Hollow Road, near what is now Dayton Drive. In the 1760’s he built a log cabin which survived at that location for nearly 240 years, until a new housing development was proposed at that site. A member and current Secretary of our society, Gloria Miller, recognized the cabin to be historic and recommended that it be saved. The new owners of the property were willing to donate the cabin provided it was moved from its historic site. Through the efforts of former Forks Township Supervisor Don Miller and his fellow board members, a space was made in Forks Park to which the log cabin could be moved. The Frick Transfer Company donated their time, effort and financial support to move the cabin. The Forks Township Historical Society is proud of its role in relocating the log cabin and helping to preserve an important artifact at the park. As part of the Frace family’s presentation, they donated to the society a scale model of the barn which was built on the Frace property. The model was crafted by Howard Frace Jr., the Great-Great-Great-Grandson of Michael Frace and was made from the original wood of the barn and to exact scale. The Frace family also provided us with a picture of the Frace barn as it existed prior to being demolished. The scale model of this barn will be on display at our log cabin open-house during Forks Township Community Days on September 18 & 19, 2021 from Noon to 4 PM. The Frace Log Cabin in located inside the Zucksville Road entrance to the Forks Township Park, near the Community Center. The purpose of our historical society is to preserve Forks Township history. When Forks Township was a farming community, there were many barns. The largest barn in the township was the Sandt barn, still located behind what is now Leiser’s Rental on Sullivan Trail and Meco Road. Today, many others are gone; lost to housing developments, commercial developments and warehouses. We continue to try to preserve what we can, even if only in digital format. If you have a digital picture of a barn, still standing or part of history, please consider sharing your picture with our society. You can post those pictures, with details of its location and ownership, on our Facebook page (The Forks Township Historical Society) or send them to us via email to [email protected]. We would greatly appreciate your help in preserving our historic barns. And if you don’t have digital copies, considering bringing your picture or pictures to our monthly meeting. The Forks Township Historical Society meets on the fourth Monday of each month (except Dec.) at 7 pm at the Faith Lutheran Church, 2012 Sullivan Trail. Enter through doors at the parking lot level. Everyone is welcome. There is never a charge. We hope to see you and your pictures soon. 5 FORKS TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY FIRE COMPANY

The Forks Township Community Fire Company would like to recognize the newest fire department officer, Lt. Michael Poloso. In the 6 years he has been with the fire department, Michael has shown great leadership and respect for his community. Congratulation Lt. Poloso!

As the fall and winter months approach us, here are a few tips about smoke alarms. • Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly. • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level. Smoke alarms should be connected so when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection. • Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. FACTS ! ! ! SAFETY TIPS • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. They should also be outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound. • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. • Current alarms on the market employ different types of technology including multi-sensing, which could include smoke and carbon monoxide combined. • Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms. • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove. • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old P.S. As daylight saving time comes to an end and we turn back the clocks on November 7, 2021 DON’T FOGET TO CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES IN YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS AND CO DETECTORS.

6 7 Before the Snow Falls The Forks Township Department of Public Works located at 100 Newlins Road East uses the fall months to prepare for the upcoming winter months. The Department of Public Work’s is where the vehicles are serviced and equipment is checked. We store about 1800 tons of salt with someone always on duty to report when the snow begins to fall. When the Snowfall Starts The Department of Public Works with the help of the Parks Department is on the job around the clock, if necessary dedicated to removing snow from 60 miles of roadway. The first step is salting the streets, beginning with the Township’s main roads and working our way into the residential areas. Applications of salt continue until the streets are cleared or until the snow is too deep. When the Snowfall Continues Plowing becomes more effective than salting when three to four inches of snow have accumulated. The main roads and residential streets are plowed by the crews who are assigned to a specific zone. The first priority is to open the main roads to provide safe access for emergency vehicles and to maintain a safe traffic flow. The plows continue to clear the streets in each zone until every road is safe. If the storm continues, the crews continue working in the same pattern until the storm ends. When the snow ends, the trucks begin to clear the intersections and widen out all of the roads by pushing the accumulated snow back to the curbs. After the Storm is Over Our crews will continue to monitor all the roads for icy conditions and where winds may redeposit snow onto the roadways. Resident and business owners are reminded that all sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after the end of the storm. Residents should NOT throw snow into the roadway when clearing their driveways and sidewalks. To report a hazardous condition, call the Department of Public Works at 610-438-2670. For medical and the police department call (911).

8 MAILBOX CHECKUP

ow is the time to make sure your mailbox is ready for winter. NImproperly installed mailboxes are occasionally damaged during normal snow plowing operations. The Township would like homeowners to inspect their mailbox before winter for proper placement and to make sure that the post is sturdy. The Township will no longer replace improperly installed mailboxes or rotted post that may be damaged during winter weather events.

Where to Place the Mailbox Here are some helpful guidelines to follow when placing your mailbox:

• Position your mailbox 41” to 45” from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry. • Place your mailbox 6” to 8” back from the curb. If you do not have a raised curb, contact your local postmaster for guidance. • Put your house or apartment number on the mailbox. • If your mailbox is on a different street from your house or apartment, put your full street address on the box.

Notice from Public Works Department . . . As the Township Public Works Department prepares for winter road maintenance, please remove all basketball hoops and other obstructions or structures within three (3) feet of the edge of the paved portion of the public street or highway in the Township. Section 195-80 of the Township Zoning Code states that it is illegal to place any structure within the edge of the paved portion of any public street or highway in the Township. If these obstrucitons or structures are not removed from the public right- of-way, the Township will not be responsible for any damage sustained to the structure as a result of snow removal in that area.

AMAZING ATHLETES & SOCCER STARS (Saturday Mornings)

Amazing Athletes: Amazing Athletes is the premiere sport and fitness program for children ages 18 months old to 6 years old. Our program teaches the fundamentals of 11 different sports in a fun, non-competitive environment. Our athletes not only learn about sports, but we focus on movement, healthy eating habits and sportsmanship! Amazing TOTS is the introduction class to Amazing Athletes for children ages 18 months to 2 years 11 months old where we encourage parents to participate with their kids to help them learn how to be successful in the team environment. TOT classes are 20 minutes long and build the confidence of young athletes to be ready for the full class once they are old enough. The Amazing Athletes class, which is 30 minutes long, is for children ages 3 - 6 years old and adds the element of progressions to the sports our athletes have been working on. Both programs run YEAR-ROUND on Saturday mornings. Classes are held outdoors in front of the community center when the weather is nice, indoors when the weather is bad. You can enroll/unenroll at any time! Curious if your kid will enjoy class? Contact us today to set up a free trial class! Also, check out our website www.amazingathletes.com/lehighvalley to check for any schedule updates!: Super Soccer Stars: Super Soccer Stars is the sister company of Amazing Athletes, run by the same, super fun coaches but with a focus on SOCCER! Our coaches will take the kids through a fun filled class with mini games that emphasize specific soccer skills! All kids can learn at their own pace in this environment, and everyone can learn to become a SOCCER STAR! Our Soccer Star classes run in 8-week sessions throughout the year.
