2 The Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia Incorporated (Trading as Diabetes Research WA) 2016-2017 Chairman’s Report

During the 2016/17 financial year, Diabetes Research WA continued to cement its place as an established Western Australian focused research organisation with its key objectives being to:

• investigate the causes and complications of all forms of diabetes; • search for new ways to prevent and control diabetes; and • discover a cure for diabetes.

The volunteer Board and small dedicated staff of the organisation worked extensively with numerous generous supporters to facilitate the continued funding of a number of important diabetes related research projects as well as to expand the fundraising profile of the organisation.

Board Renewal

Following significant personal efforts into the organisation over a combined period in excess of 40 years, we saw the retirement of two long-standing Board members. Firstly, Mr William (Bill) Coleman AM retired from the Board earlier in the year following an involvement which encompassed numerous volunteer positions over the life of the organisation from its formative years. Secondly, Dr Erica Smyth retired as our long-standing Chairman after active involvement since the late 1990s including the last ten years in the Chairman role. Through Erica’s leadership over this time, Diabetes Research WA became the recipient of generous donations and bequests enabling the funding of over 20 research projects into diabetes and diabetes-related matters as well as ongoing funding contributions to our sister institution The Centre for Diabetes Research. Both Bill and Erica leave behind a terrific legacy and we are grateful that they have offered to be called upon by the existing Board members in advisory capacities if required.

In line with these changes, we welcomed a number of new appointments to the Board. Ms Liz McGrath and Ms Sally Bruce joined us bringing their skills in media and legal matters respectively. In addition, Mr Brad Russell-Lane and Mrs Janette Lano have also recently joined bringing important finance and business skills, with Janette taking on the role of Honorary Treasurer.

Research Projects

The 2015 research grants moved into their second year, being Dr Shelley Gorman’s study into “Sunlight, nitric oxide, obesity and type-2 diabetes: exploring the role of brown adipose tissue”, and Professor Grant Morahan’s study into “Predicting which people with diabetes are at high risk for heart disease”.

In November 2016, two new $80,000 research projects were awarded, the first to Assistant Professor Vance Mathews for the “Role of the sympathetic nervous system in regulation of the sodium glucose co- transporter 2: implications of type 2 diabetes” and the second to Dr Karen Rothacker for a study on “The effect of hyperglycaemia in standard and low insulin states on exercise performance compared to exercise performance in euglycemia”. We are grateful for the medical and research specialists who offered their time in assessing the various grant applications we received, this being a challenging job.

Commentary regarding these research projects is contained elsewhere in this Annual Report. Importantly, scientific papers regarding research projects funded by previous grants from Diabetes

3 Research WA have been published in scientific journals, and the profile of our organisation is growing as a result.

Support and Fundraising Activities

Diabetes Research WA continues to be a beneficiary of extremely generous donations, in terms of time and financial support, from various suppliers and supporters. These include Two Moons Consulting which provides extensive pro-bono marketing consulting advice including our vibrant branding profile and website, and Elfin Database Solutions which has dramatically improved our member and marketing database capabilities. Ms Natalie Caudle of Capture Media has also worked tirelessly through the year to successfully increase our media profile in state and local news media, and expand our profile across broader research-based news coverage. Our various Ambassadors, including sports commentator Dennis Cometti, Australian actress Jenni Baird, our Junior Ambassadors Sophie Anti and Ajay McCarthy and Business Ambassador the Western Australian Road Transport Association, have all provided great support and profile to our research funding efforts. We are also grateful for support from many other volunteers including the micro-volunteering team from the University of Western Australia and Royal Perth Hospital which provides office space and support.

Key fundraising activities during the year included:

• The annual Convicts for a Cause event at Old Fremantle Gaol, raising approximately $16,000. This brings to an end our agreed three-year involvement with this volunteer organisation, for which we are very grateful; • Generous donations from a number of Lions Club groups throughout Western Australia, including the Albany Lions Club “Hope in a Boat” project; • A very generous bequest from a supporter not previously known to Diabetes Research WA for approximately $157,000; • Numerous donations from one-off and regular “Be Extraordinary, Give Regularly” donors, including community sports clubs and rural community groups; and • The receipt of modest interest income on our cash reserves.

The Board has formed a Fundraising Committee which focuses at regular meetings on the organisation’s fundraising efforts and longer-term planning, linked with our key research objectives.

Thank You

And finally, the Board of Diabetes Research WA sincerely thanks our research grant recipients and our staff, specifically Ms Sherl Westlund and Mrs Dione Coleman, as well as all of our volunteers, supporters, donors and suppliers for their terrific efforts, energy and support over the last year. This is integral to our organisation.

We look forward to the coming year with a keen focus on our diabetes research projects and expanding our funding capacity to achieve our broader research objectives, in particular the search for an ultimate cure for diabetes.

4 WA Centre for Diabetes Research (The WA Centre for Diabetes Research was established in 2005 through an initiative of the Diabetes Research Foundation WA, The University of Western Australia and WAIMR/Perkins Inst.)

2016 – 2017 Research Update

The beginning of 2017 has seen the start of the movement of the world’s largest next-generation genetic resource, The Gene Mine, to China’s leading animal sciences institute and medical school, Peking Union Medical College in Beijing. We have formed a collaboration with them to host The Gene Mine, as we can no longer afford to keep it here in Australia. I have spent much time helping them to set up their breeding program and various computer databases. I have also been appointed a Joint Professor in Beijing to supervise discovery programs of The Gene Mine in China. This is an excellent opportunity to foster many international collaborations with various research groups in China.

During 2016, The Centre for Diabetes Research joined with a large team of researchers from around Australia to examine the environmental factors that contribute to type 1 diabetes (T1D), and how these interact with the genetic factors we have investigated over the past ten years. This large project, termed ENDIA, is part of the NHMRC-JDRF Centre of Research Excellence for the Protection of Pancreatic Beta Cells, on which I am a Principal Investigator. ENDIA is investigating many different factors, of which we are looking at the genes of the participating child and their family member with T1D. So far in 2017, we have extracted DNA from over 1,000 study members and of these we have genotyped almost half of the infant-proband pairs. We have determined their HLA-DR genotypes using the simplified genetic test we developed. Within the next month, we will start fully genotyping these infant-proband pairs at the 50+ T1D-associated genes.

This year has also seen two international scholars visiting the Centre for Diabetes Research. Firstly, we had PhD student Zafar Iqbal from Quaid Azam University in Pakistan. During his visit here, Mr Iqbal worked on looking at various chemical compounds and whether these compounds could be used to successfully reduce the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy in mouse models. Mr Iqbal showed some interesting results in his experiments and we look forward to mouse collaboration work with him in the future. Our second visiting scholar, undergraduate student Aditya Gangwal from the Indian Institute of Technology, worked toward parallelization of a computationally intensive module that is part of a program which identifies genes associated with complex traits coming from the Gene Mine. He was able to create a robust, user-friendly tool that will make the output of research much easier and faster. Three of our own PhD students, Farhana Ruma, Lakshini Herat and Abraham John will be submitting their theses over the coming months, the final exciting step of the beginning of their research careers.

Another exciting project we have begun this year is looking into the genetics of a large family affected by T1D. We were approached by a person who had T1D, along with various family members spread over four generations. This is highly unusual and the potential cause of their diabetes causes great distress to this family. Genotyping of both the affected and unaffected family members followed by statistical analysis of the results revealed genetic variants that the T1D affected members all share. This is some very exciting new work and we look forward to sharing with you updates on the progress of this research.

On a sad note, after over seven years with the Centre, our Bioinformatics Analyst Dr Ramesh Ram has moved onto another position. In his time here, Dr Ram made many contributions to our research and will be missed. Dr Sylvia Young continues to work on our important Bioinformatics research, which will be explored in depth in our upcoming detailed Annual Report.

5 We also continue to apply our methods to understand better the genetic basis for both T1D and T2D, diabetes complications, and a range of other diseases including dementia, heart disease and melanoma.

Once again, we are grateful to Diabetes Research WA for their support, which is so important in helping us continue with our ground-breaking research.

2016-2017 Research Grant Report

The 2016/17 year was another exciting and successful year for diabetes research in Western Australia, particularly involving those researchers and projects supported by DRWA.

As in recent years, two project grants were awarded by DRWA for research conducted primarily in WA. Grant applications were divided between basic/fundamental science and clinical/translational science. Each grant application is reviewed and assessed by several independent clinicians and basic science research peers working in the diabetes field in Western Australia. All the assessors were again highly impressed by, and noted, the very high quality of each grant application.

The basic/fundamental science grant for 2016 was awarded to Assistant Professor Vance Matthews from The University of Western Australia for a project examining the role of the sympathetic nervous system and a new class of medication (SGLT-2 (sodium/glucose like transporter 2) inhibitors) in reducing cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes.

Dr Karen Rothaker, in collaboration with the team from Princess Margaret Hospital and the UWA School of Sport Science, was awarded the clinical/translation grant to investigate the prevalence and mechanisms behind the development of hypoglycaemia (low glucose levels) and performance during exercise in people with type 1 diabetes.

Previously supported studies are also drawing to completion with Dr Shelley Gorman from the Telethon Kids Institute reporting that her team have successfully developed a transgenic mouse model, which they will use to continue to examine the role of sunlight on brown adipose tissue and the subsequent impact on nitric oxide generation, which has the potential to modify future obesity and type-2 diabetes development.

Dr Gerard Hoyne from Notre Dame University, Fremantle, has completed his studies looking at the role of the immune CDK4 cell in regulating beta cell homeostasis and function. His studies have demonstrated the presence of these cells in an animal model of type 1 diabetes and have also demonstrated their role in beta-cell survival and insulin secretion. The results have been presented at local and national meetings and formal publication is anticipated shortly.

Dr Aron Chakera from The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research has completed his trial of the use of linagliptin (an oral diabetes therapy) in the development and management of diabetes occurring after kidney transplantation. His study has demonstrated that the treatment is safe and effective at maintaining glucose levels and may also improve insulin sensitivity, thereby potentially reducing the risk of post-transplant diabetes. These results have also been presented nationally and internationally.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

The principal activity of the Association during the year was to act as a charitable institution providing research funds to Western Australian diabetes researchers. No significant change in the nature of those activities occurred during the year.

DIVIDENDS

As the Association has no share capital, no dividends are payable.

REVIEW OF OPERATIONS

DRFWA is a private charitable Association dedicated to the funding of research in Western Australia focused on the prevention, control and cure of all types of diabetes. The Association’s objectives are to fund the State’s best researchers to investigate the causes and complications of all forms of diabetes, to search for new ways to prevent and control diabetes, and to discover a cure for diabetes. Funds are sourced from bequests, fundraising initiatives, workplace and corporate giving, and generous personal donations.

KEY STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES

Through the Association’s efforts, funds are sourced for the purpose of enabling world-class diabetes research in Western Australia. The Association currently awards two annual research grants to applicants through a formal and competitive application process. The selection of grant awardees each year is overseen by an independent Medical Advisory Panel. This panel reviews all grant applications and makes recommendations to the Members of the Board on the worthiness of such applications. Approval of research grants is ultimately decided by the Board.

MEASUREMENT OF PERFORMANCE

The success of DRFWA is measured through formal and informal monitoring of our key objectives for each year. The Board meets approximately every two months and at each meeting reviews the financial, marketing and research outcomes of the Association, and its future plans. The key areas monitored include:

• Compliance with regulatory and acceptable business practices; • Effective management of the Association; • Cost control; • Periodic fundraising targets; • Applications and processes for the award of research grants; • Website “hits” and enquiries, and media presence; and • Performance of fundraising and other programs against expectations.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN STATE OF AFFAIRS

During the year, the Association continued to raise funds from generous estate bequests and donations from members and other individuals and companies, and to apply these funds to diabetes research projects and general running costs. In addition, as foreshadowed last year, DRFWA returned the sum of $295,980 to a deceased estate at the request of the relevant estate executor following further interpretation of the deceased’s bequest documentation.

Other than the above, there were no significant changes in the state of affairs during the financial year.

MATTERS SUBSEQUENT TO THE END OF THE FINANCIAL YEAR

No other matters or circumstances have arisen since 30 June 2017 that have significantly affected the Association’s operations, results or state of affairs, or may do so in future years.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 30 June 2017

1. GENERAL INFORMATION AND STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE

The financial report includes the financial statements and notes of The Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia (Inc.).

These general purpose financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements. The Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia (Inc.) is a not-for-profit entity for the purpose of preparing the financial statements.

The financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2017 were approved and authorised for issue by the Members of the Board on 11 September 2017.

2. CHANGES IN ACCOUNTING POLICIES

None of the new standards and amendments to standards that are mandatory for the first time for the financial year beginning 1 July 2016 affected any of the amounts recognised in the current period or any prior period and are not likely to affect future periods.

3. SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The significant accounting policies that have been used in the preparation of these financial statements are summarised below.

The financial statements have been prepared using the measurement bases specified by Australian Accounting Standards for each type of asset, liability, income and expense. The measurement bases are more fully described in the accounting polices below.

3.1 Basis of Preparation

First-time adoption of IFRS accounting policy These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). These financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2017 are the first the Association has prepared in accordance with IFRS.

Historical cost convention These financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis and under the historical cost convention.

Critical accounting estimates Preparation of financial statements in conformity with Australian Accounting Standards requires the use of certain critical accounting estimates. It also requires management to exercise judgement in the process of applying the Association’s accounting policies. There were no areas involving higher degrees of judgement or complexity, or areas where assumptions and estimates were significant to the financial statements of the Association.

Functional and presentation currency Items included in the financial statements of the Association’s operations are measured using the currency of the primary economic environment in which the entity operates (‘the function currency’). The financial statements are presented in Australian dollars, which is the Association’s functional and presentation currency.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 30 June 2017 (continued)

3.2 Revenue Recognition

Revenue is measured by reference to the fair value of consideration received or receivable, when the Association is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

Donations Donations are recognised when the amounts are received. In common with most organisations dependent on such contributions, the Association is unable to establish control over voluntary donations prior to their initial entry into the accounting records.

Bequests Revenue is recognised when bequests are received by the Association.

Interest Revenue Interest Revenue is recognised on a time proportionate basis that takes into account the effective yield on the financial asset.

3.3 Property, Plant and Equipment

Property, plant and equipment is stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Historical cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for it to be capable of operating in the manner intended by the Association.

Where a bequest is received in the form of assets, these are recognised at fair value at the date acquired.

Depreciation is recognised on a straight-line basis to write down the cost less estimated residual value of the asset. The estimated useful lives range as follows:

Buildings 25 to 50 years Vehicles 4 to 10 years IT Equipment 3 to 5 years Furniture, fittings and other equipment 3 to 8 years

The assets’ residual values, useful lives and depreciation methods are reviewed, and adjusted prospectively if appropriate, if there is an indication of a significant change since the last reporting date.

Gains and losses on disposals are determined as the difference between the disposal proceeds and the carrying amount of the assets and are recognised in profit or loss within other income or other expenses.

3.4 Income Tax

The Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia (Inc.) is exempt from tax under Subdivision 50-B of the Income Tax Assessments Act 1997.

For the purposes of presentation in the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents consist of cash and cash equivalents as defined above. Cash flows are presented in the Statement of Cash Flows on a gross basis.

3.6 Payables

These amounts represent liabilities for goods and services provided to the Association prior to the end of the financial year which are still outstanding. The amounts are unsecured and are usually paid within 30 days of recognition. Trade and other payables are presented as current liabilities unless payment is not due within 12 months from the reporting date. They are recognised initially at their fair value.

3.7 Employee benefits

The liability for employee benefits relates to amounts expected to be paid to employees for annual leave, long service leave, salary sacrifice and superannuation. It is based on legal and contractual entitlements. Current wage rates are used in the calculation of the provision.

3.8 Goods and Services Tax (GST)

In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense.
