MHSCA Hall of Fame

The Michigan High School Coaches Association was founded on the campus of Central Michigan University in 1954. CMU has graciously provided housing for the hall, since 1971. The Hall of Fame is Now Literally a Hall! It has been relocated to the hallway that is the north entrance to the Student Activities Center (SAC), just south of Rose Area. The entrance is just north of the stone sign for the MHSCA Hall of Fame. It features a 60’ long mural, showcases, and an electric kiosk, featuring all of the 695 inductees, dating back to 1958. The process of uploading previous in- ductees is ongoing, but the hall is very impressive. Stop by and visit, if you can.

Qualifications for nomination are as follows: 1) one must have served a minimum of twenty-five (25) years in high school coaching and/or athletic administration; 2) receive two letters of recommendation from administrators and/or fellow coaches; 3) have exemplified service to his/her community, state and affiliated organization; 4) demonstrat- ed coaching excellence.

Gina Mazziloni

Retiring MHSAA assistant director Gina Mazzolini has served Michigan high school student-athletes for more than 30 years in ways that will continue to impact schools and athletes for years to come. In recognition of her efforts, she has been named the 2016 recipient of the Michigan High School Coaches Association Distin-

guished Service Award.

Mazzolini has served the MHSAA since 1993 and is the administrator for girls vol- leyball, swimming and diving, alpine skiing and tennis. She also handles the sanc- tioning of out-of-state competitions and serves as the MHSAA’s point person on foreign exchange and international student issues. Mazzolini received a Citation from the National Federation of State High School Associations this past summer

and was the 2010 recipient of the MHSAA’s Women in Sports Leadership Award.

“Gina Mazzolini has contributed to Michigan high school athletics on a variety of levels providing vision, leadership and dedication,” MHSAA Executive Director John E. “Jack” Roberts said. “Gina Mazzolini has shaped rules and policies that have impacted programs not only in our state,

but nationally as well.”

After standout basketball and volleyball careers at St. Johns High School and Central Michigan Universi- ty, Mazzolini taught and coached multiple sports during the 1979-80 school year at Ovid-Elsie High School. She then spent two years teaching and serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Michigan State

University, where she also earned her master’s degree in physical education.

“It’s one of those things where I’ve worked in this position because I loved doing it,” Mazzolini said. “I enjoyed working with the adult coaches and adult officials, and then the student-athletes. I’m apprecia-

tive and humbled. You do those things because you enjoy them.”

In addition to her work at the MHSAA, Mazzolini has provided a long list of contributions at the national level. She has served as the NFHS representative on the board for the Council on Standards for Interna- tional Educational Travel, which identifies, promotes and supports international youth exchange pro- grams, and has sat on several CSIET committees. She’s currently serving on the NFHS Annual Meeting Planning Committee and also has served on NFHS rules committees for soccer, swimming and diving, and volleyball (chairing that sport’s rules committee from 2004-08), and on NFHS advisory committees

for athletic directors and sports medicine.

She recently was inducted into the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the inaugural St. John's High School Hall of Fame and was inducted into the CMU Athlet- ic Hall of Fame in 1992.

This award is presented each year to someone who has done an outstanding job supporting and promoting athletics in general, and has shown consideration and assistance to the high school scene and the Michigan High School Coaches Association.

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Steve Barbeau coached for 28 years at Millington High School. Steve not only coached 3 sports (wrestling, volleyball, and football), but he also worked as an MHSAA official for basketball and football. Additionally, Steve helped his school put in place an athletic eligibility policy to ensure that student-athletes were held to high standards. Steve is most remembered for acting as the as- sistant varsity football coach under Tim Furno. Steve’s teams boast a 170-96

record, 2 district titles, and 2 regional titles.

Steve’s role on the coaching staff may have been technically labeled “assistant,” but his impact was just as important as any head coach. “While assistants are often overlooked for recognition, a head coach is only as good as the assistants under him. Coach Barbeau’s contribution to our school and program speaks volumes of his worth and value not only to the players on the field, but in their lives outside of football and athlet- ics,” wrote RC Bastian athletic director at Millington.

Kevin Behmer

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Kevin Behmer began his teaching and coaching career in 1988 at Ovid-Elsie High School. In just his first three years of coaching, Kevin became the head coach of the girls track program and co-founder of Ovid-Elsie’s middle school track program. In 1991, Kevin continued his career at Ann Arbor Huron High School, where he spent 10 years as the girls track and field coach and 11

years as the girls cross country coach.

Kevin describes himself as “a guy who loved his job, and his kids and worked very hard to do the best by both,” and it is clear that his efforts paid off. Kev- in’s track team placed at the state finals for 10 consecutive years, and 14 of his runners were named All-State. Additionally, his teams set or broke 46

school records in his 10 years as head coach.

In 2000, Kevin took over the girls cross country program at Huron and the program grew from 19 run- ners to 66 runners in 2007. His cross country teams qualified for the state finals 6 times in his 11 years as head coach with 4 All-State medalists. Kevin’s impact on track and cross country are not limited to Ann Arbor Huron High School; Kevin has served as a member of the MHSAA Rules and Regulations Com-

mittee and the MHSAA Regional Site Selection Committee for both track and field and cross country.

Throughout his time as a coach and member of MHSAA committees, Kevin’s “primary service was and is to better the participation opportunities for Track and Field athletes and to better the sport,” wrote MHSAA Assistant Director Nate Hampton. Mark Uyl, MHSAA Assistant Director echoed that sentiment in writing, “Many of the good and sound policies that are now in place can be credited to the work and guidance of Kevin Behmer over his long and illustrious coaching career.” 4 Rick Guild

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Rick Guild began coaching at Johannesburg-Lewiston 41 years ago and contin- ues to coach varsity baseball. Rick’s baseball teams have finished as state quarter-finalists twice and semi-finalists once. Rick has also coached girls and boys varsity basketball and has over 800 wins in that sport alone. From 1986- 2001 Rick served as the athletic director at Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools and was named Regional Athletic Director of the Year in 1995.

Rick’s principal Thomas Hausbeck wrote that Rick is “Highly revered by the administration, coaching staff, parents, and community as an excellent leader and role model.” Rick truly cares about his student-athletes and started the Van Kapture Memorial scholarship fund for his baseball players, which is open to any baseball player planning to pursue a four-year college degree. Rick’s scholarship is just one example of the impact he has on his players after they leave his field.

James Hilgendorf, Superintendent of Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools wrote, “Beyond the won-lost statistics is an individual who has given unselfishly to the student athletes of this school.”

Don Kimble

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Don Kimble began teaching swimming in 1974 and began coaching high school swimming in 1980 at Holland Christian High School. Don stepped away from high school coaching after 9 years, but returned as the swimming coach at Holland High School in 2002. In Don’s 34 years of coaching, his teams have won 6 state titles and finished as runners-up 4 times. Additionally, many of Don’s swimmers have swum on junior national teams, gone onto best college swimming programs in the country, and even qualified for the Olympic Trials.

It is apparent to anyone who talks with Don that he is a true expert on the sport. As his former athletic director, Michael Clark, wrote, “What is most im- pressive is that Don is constantly looking to increase his swim knowledge. I always felt that Don was on the cutting edge of new training methods and improve ways of instructing student athletes.”

Don does not strive to create just fast individuals, but to develop a team. Don enthusiastically welcomes anyone who expresses interests in swimming, and “works extremely well with swimmers who might nev- er win a race but who are looking to be a part of a school athletic team. He makes all his swimmers feel important to the team,” as Michael Clark wrote.

In 2013, Don took over the swimming program at Byron Center. At the time, the program was underper- forming and falling apart. Both the boys and girls teams have winning records under Don. In 2015, the girls team won their 1st conference championship and broke 10 of the schools 11 records. Byron Center athletic director, Daniel Holden, writes that the most important change Don has brought to Byron Center is the “true passion for the sport, and the trust and love our kids now have for their leader.” 5 Thomas Kudwa

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Tomas Kudwa’s coaching resume is best summarized by the retired sports writer for the Ludington Daily News Sports Editor, Lloyd Wallace. Wallace wrote, “After a successful stint as a basketball coach for two area high schools, Tom took over a good if unspectacular girls tennis program at Luding- ton High School and quickly took it to a new level. It is rare when an individual is able to generate the success Tom has enjoyed for two-plus decades in terms of his dual record and invitational, conference and regional champion- ships.” Additionally, Tom’s teams have qualified for the state tournament 13

times and in 2015 finished in 3rd place, a school best performance.

Tom’s time as a girls tennis coach at Ludington has not just been spent with his players on the court, though. After 30 years of coaching, Tom turned the idea of resurfacing the school’s four dilapidated courts into building one of the most impressive tennis facilities in the state. Tom helped raise over $700,000 for the project, and “people donated because they had the common trust that Tom Kudwa would make it happen,” wrote superintendent Cal De Kuiper. Tom acted as chief designer, general contractor, and construction manager on the project. Since building the facility, tennis has be- come an increasingly popular support in Ludington. Cal De Kuiper credits Ludington’s thriving tennis com-

munity to Tom’s “success, tradition, coaching, reputation, and relationships.”

Dale Horowski, principal at Ludington wrote, “Tom’s career is an example of how it should be done--a focus on all kids and their development as human beings through the pursuit of individual growth intellec- tually, physically, and emotionally.”

Rob Lutz

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Rob Lutz has coached track and field for 43 years, 17 of which he also spent coaching football. Rob started coaching track in 1974 at Camden-Frontier High School where he built a well-respected and highly competitive program before moving over to his daughter’s high school, Reading. While coaching at Read- ing, the boys track and field program was nothing short of a powerhouse, proven by the back to back state titles in 1990 and 1991. In 1998 Rob re- turned to coaching at Camden-Frontier, where he taught history, and his boys teams won 3 conference championships and a regional championship in his final 6 years there. In total, Rob’s teams have finished in the state top ten 15 times, his shot putters have won 28 medals in the state championship meets,

and he has coached 6 state championship shot putters.

After retiring from teaching in 2003, Rob and his wife moved to Rob’s hometown of White Pigeon. Rob’s

reputation preceded him, and he was quickly asked to join the coaching staff at White Pigeon High School.

Kim Spalsbury, former track and cross country coach at Camden-Frontier, wrote, “Rob is very modest, always deferring to his athletes and downplaying his impact on their success, but he is a very well orga- nized, composed, and revered teacher of young men!” Kim Spalsbury and Deb Price have both coached with and have been mentored by Rob. They have also been inducted in the MHSCA Hall of Fame and are happy to welcome Rob writing, “it’s time for Rob to join us!”

6 John Maciak

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

John Maciak began caching in 1969 and has coached football, baseball, and bas- ketball from junior high players through collegiate teams. John began coaching at Flint Holy Rosary where he led his teams to 24 district championships and a runner-up finish in the state. In 1992 John took over and rebuilt a struggling Grand Rapids West Catholic basketball team. The team had not finished with a winning season in nearly two decades, but “John began teaching the kids previ- ously unknown fundamental skills, helped them develop a winning and competi- tive attitude, and motivated them to dedicate themselves to work in the weight room and at camps in the summer,” wrote Steve Faber, a member of his coach- ing staff at West Catholic. In just John’s third season, the team finished with a winning record of 12-9.

Perhaps most notably, John has volunteer coached the National Transplant Games of America basketball teams. His team won gold medals at the games in 2010, 2012, and 2014. The games are held in order to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.

Steve Faber wrote, “John’s greatest impact in basketball, however, is that although his record is filled with impressive numbers, his main concern is the welfare of his players, their families, and the overall school community.”

Jodi Manore

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

When Jodi Manore was a student at Bedford High School, no athletics for girls were offered. Jodi then went on to Michigan State University where she played on the intercollegiate volleyball team and returned to her alma mater to teach in 1975. Four years later, Jodi took over the young varsity volleyball program at Bedford and quickly made girls athletics a success at Bedford. In 2014, Jodi became the winningest coach in the country with 1,833 matches won. Since then, Jodi’s teams have increased that number to 1,871. Her teams also boast 3 state championships, 5 runner-up titles, and 22 semi-final appearances. In June, Jodi received the National Coach of the Year award from the National

High School Athletic Coaches Association.

Jodi’s teams excel in the classroom just as they do on court. Nineteen of her teams have achieved all academic honors, and Jodi is known for “fostering an atmosphere where her student-athletes main- tain a proper perspective regarding sports and their studies,” as Jodi’s Athletic Director Mark German wrote. Roderick Hurley, principal at Bedford, credits the example the Jodi sets for her students and players for their success in writing that Jodi “is a wonderful example to have for our students. [She] has modeled a great worth ethic... and expected that same behavior back.”

Many of Jodi’s former athletes have extended their high school volleyball experiences to college ath- letics and coaching. Over 100 of Jodi’s players have played college volleyball, 36 of them in Division I. Additionally, some of Jodi’s former players have returned to Bedford to coach with her. Jodi proves that “success will come through hard work and dedication,” just as she has taught her student- athletes.

7 Robert Morrill

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Robert Morrill began coaching wrestling in Ohio in 1959 where he established wrestling programs at two schools. In 1967, Bob moved to Hazel Park where he worked to make the high school wrestling program bigger and better. Bob im- proved the program to an impressive status by “being positive both on and off the mat,” wrote principal Don Vogt and superintendent James Meisinger. Bob ensured that his program would be successful by starting elementary and middle school programs so his wrestlers were prepared fundamentally for high school

wrestling.

In his nearly two decades at Hazel Park, Bob’s teams were 183-35-3 with 6 un- defeated seasons. Three of Bob’s teams finished runners-up in the state and placed in the top ten 9 times. Bob coached 11 individual state champions, in- cluding the 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist for team USA, Steve Fraser. After winning the gold medal, Fraser credited Bob by sending a signed picture with the message, “Coach Morrill, thanks for being such a great

coach!”

Bob did not slow down after retiring from coaching in 1985, as he continued to run district and regional tournaments. Additionally, Bob continues to help run the computers at the state meet. Vogt and Meisinger added, “Bob Morrill was a great coach. He is an even greater man!” who they highly recom- mend to the MHSCA Hall of Fame.

James Nelson

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

James Nelson took the experience he gained as a successful Division I athlete to coaching track and cross country at his alma mater, Pontiac Northern High School (currently Pontiac High School). In his 42 years as coach, James’s track and cross country teams quickly saw the success James earned as an athlete. During his coaching career, James’s track teams won 2 state championships, 11 individual championships, and 9 relay team championships. Additionally, James is the only coach to ever win seven consecutive Oakland County track

championships.

James’ success did not come without hard work. Retired Director of Athletics Tarlton Small recalled James efforts as a coach in writing, “He gained more insight in the philosophy of how to communicate with athletes and keep them focused on the importance of becoming a complete student-athlete.” James focus was not only on the times of his runners, but on their welfare. A former student of James wrote, “Coach Nelson gives athletes and students direction both on and off the field. Coach Nelson has even been a father figure for student athletes that didn’t have

support from home, encouraging them to be successful both in the classroom and on the track.”

James has had such a positive impact on his school, church, and community that even the former mayor of Pontiac Walter Moore “can’t think of anyone more deserving of being inducted into the MHSCA hall of fame.”

8 Coe Roberts

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Coe Roberts was an accomplished basketball player at SS. Peter & Paul (now Saginaw Nouvel) and began coaching basketball at St. Helen and St. Stephen Junior High Schools in 1955, the year of his high school graduation. Coe contin- ued coaching for 36 years, but did not limit himself to one season; he coached football, track, girls basketball, and boys basketball. In 1983, Coe began coach- ing basketball alone, and coached at St. Thomas Aquinas, SS. Peter & Paul,

Swan Valley, and Bridgeport High Schools throughout his career.

Coe has been inducted to the SS. Peter & Paul Hall of Fame, the Saginaw Catho- lic Schools Hall of Fame, and was named St. Thomas Aquinas Athletic Associa- tion Man of the Year in 1968.

Coe was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish for 53 years and was in- credibly active in the school’s athletics. Coe organized the school’s athletic association and acted as the first athletic director where he helped form the Junior Valley Parochial League. When the new church and school was built, Coe even designed the new gymnasium.

Al Schrauben

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Al Schrauben started coaching middle school basketball at Portland St. Patrick in 1977, and took over the varsity girls program in 1985. In his 36 years of coaching and 20 years as athletic director, Al has led his varsity girls teams to an impressive 583-153 record with 10 Class D State Championship appearanc- es, 6 of which resulted in State Championships. Al’s teams have also earned 13 Final Four appearances, 14 Regional titles, and 17 District titles. Al’s record as a coach speaks for itself, but as his coworker and friend Mark Scheurer wrote, “Al is an icon of success even if he had never won a game.”

Those who come into contact with Al describe him with respect and admira- tion. His former players and current JV coaches at St. Pat’s, Michelle Smith and Jocelyn Rockey, described watching Al on the court and watching “other coaches talking to him, ref- erees shaking his hand with respect, and just overall admiration by teams that wish to have a Girls Bas- ketball Program like St. Patrick’s.” Coaches who Al has mentored “learned how to coach in every aspect of the word: how to look at talent, the strategy of the game, and most importantly, how to treat kids,” as Mark Scheurer explained.

Al’s treatment of his players and his ability to instill the values of teamwork are what his players remem- ber after graduation. “The admiration each player has for Coach Schrauben lasts much longer and runs much deeper than the time spent between the lines of a basketball court,” wrote Michelle Smith and Jocelyn Rockey, which is why he is just as present at graduation parties and weddings as he is on the court.

9 Samuel Vicchy

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

In his 36 years and 59 athletic seasons of coaching, Sam Vicchy has coached a plethora of sports including: water polo, swimming, golf, cross country, and track. Sam spent 29 years of his coaching career at Belleville that started in 1970. In that year, Sam took over the Tiger Swim Club, “a fledgling swim club, and quickly turned it into a very successful program which has taught competi- tive swimming to numerous boys and girls in the Belleville area,” described fel-

low swimming coach Gregor Cooper.

In that same year, Sam took over the boys swim team and turned that program around from a losing one to a one with 10 consecutive state meet appearances. Sam worked tirelessly to improve his program and swim coaches in the area. Held fundraisers to pay a

diving coach, get new equipment, and he even put together a State Swimming Coaches Clinic in 1978.

Sam’s philosophy of “start, stick, finish” inspired his athletes to set goals and put a plan in place to meet those goals, whether they pertained to athletics or not. “Sam worked endlessly in getting the community, parents, and faculty involved with helping his students get summer jobs, keeping their grades up, and helping many secure scholarships to continue their education at college,” said Sam’s former assistant coach William Snider. Sam’s inspiration and motivation worked, as many of Sam’s swimmers earned

scholarships to Division I colleges for swimming.

Perhaps the best display of Sam’s influence came when Belleville hosted a recognition event for Sam de- scribed by Joseph Brodie Interim Athletic Director at Bellville. “Swimmers from the 1960s through the 1990s came out to show their support from as far west as California and as far south as Florida. As an athletic director, I can see the impact left on my current coaches through the stories they tell and the mo- tivational techniques they use on our swimmers that were passed down from [Sam].”

Paul Walter

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

Paul Walter coached football at Hillsdale High School for 35 years. For 30 years, Paul coached the freshman and junior varsity teams, and he coached the varsity team for 5 years. In 1988, Paul was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Paul’s presence in the Hillsdale football program was important for play- ers at all levels. Athletic director Wes Cummings wrote, “Everyday he shows his expertise in teaching, motivating, and nurturing the young people who are

lucky to have him as their coach.”

Upon the announcement of his retirement, Paul’s coworkers tried to find a way to honor all that he has done for his football program. In nominating him for the MHSCA Hall of Fame, Cummings wrote, “While we are quick to congratu- late him on his retirement, we know that his departure will leave a huge hole where a solid rock once stood.”

10 Joe Zomerlei

2016 Hall of Fame Inductee

In 1977, Joe Zomerlei started the girls track and field program at Caledonia High School and has coached the team ever since. Joe’s track program has be- come synonymous with success. His teams have an overall 224-95 dual meet record and have won 7 conference championships, 3 regional championships, a state runner up, and a state championship. Joe has also coached 29 All-State performances.

Although Joe’s teams have found much success on the track, Joe’s most valua- ble impact goes far beyond medals and trophies. As his assistant coach Ben Howell stated, “The lives he has touched are countless...He coaches to help build up our youth, and to develop positive relationships that inspire and drive our student-athletes to excel beyond the athletic playing field and into their everyday lives.” In his 40 years as the girls track and field head coach, Joe has “developed excellent people, competitive athletes, and a sense of family,” said

James Glazier, Principal of Caledonia High School.

Principal Glazier described Joe as a “mainstay” at Caledonia High School, as Joe’s presence is noticed in all seasons. Joe has coached varsity football for 36 years, officiated basketball for 30 years, and attends nearly every school event involving his students and athletes.

Scott Weis, Athletic Director at Caledonia High School credits Joe’s coaching and mentoring for helping his former athletes lead “successful and proactive lives.” He went on to say that Joe’s contributions to his sport and athletes are immeasurable, which is exactly what makes him deserving of a place in the MHSCA Hall of Fame.

2016 NHSACA Hall of Fame

Jim Bennett, Grosse Ile

Coach Bennett began his coaching career in 1974 at Grosse Ile High School as an assistant boys’ golf coach and a teacher of Mathematics. He was the assistant coach until 1980 when he took over the reins as their head golf coach – a position he held until he retired in 2003. Twenty-four years as head coach and 30 total years as a golf coach. During those years as a head coach, his teams won 17 league cham- pionships, seven regional titles, and five state championships. They had a regional record of 375-74. In 1997 he began serving as an assistant coach for the girls’ golf program retiring in 2003, helped the girls’ team win five state titles and finished a state runner up two times. In 2007 he came out of retirement and for the next eight years he coached the girls to a 117-4, win-loss record, three more state titles and a state runner up finish. He coached golf for a total of 38 years. He has been name national golf Coach of the Year by the NHSF and by the NHSACA. He was inducted into the MIGA Hall of Fame in 2005 and was inducted into the MHSCA Hall of Fame in 2006. In June he was inducted into the NHSCA Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

Jerry Lasceski, Akron-Fairgrove

Coach Lasceski graduated from CMU with a bachelor’s degree earned, as he worked his way through college. He began his coaching career in 1965 with boys’ track and field at Akron-Fairgrove. He taught business and coached the Vikings two years after his retirement in 2006. He started their cross coun- try program in 1970 and coached the boys’ team through 2007. He coached the girls’ program during the same time frame with the exception of years 1980-1988. His boys’ track and field teams earned 12 conference championships, six regional titles, 2 state runner up finishes and two state champion- ship titles. He had 63 all-state, and 12 state individual champions. Twice he was named MITCA Coach of the Year. His boys’ cross country team had ten top 10 finishes, one state runner up finish, and one state champion team. He had 15 all-state runners and one state champion runner. His girls’ cross country team had 7 top 10 finishes, one state champion team, one state champion runner and eight all-state runners.
