6th State Financial Inclusion Forum (SFIF), Odisha Theme: “PMJDY: Beyond Opening of Accounts” Date: 20th April 2015 (2.00-5.00pm) Venue: Hotel New Marrion , Bhubaneswar Proceedings of the Meeting Background: Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) in partnership with Department for International Development (DFID), UK, is implementing a bilateral project titled “Poorest States Inclusive Growth (PSIG)” programme. The programme aims at to facilitate better access to financial services by the poor and to promote pro-poor investments in India’s four poor states of Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The key mandate of the programme as earlier said is to improve access to both financial as well as non-credit services (savings, credit, insurance, pension, remittance, mobile banking, BCs etc.) for poor people and to strengthen the institutional framework so as to help the poor in improving their income and quality of life through multi-farious initiatives. ACCESS-ASSIST has been assigned by PSIG to coordinate the initiatives on policy advocacy in the above four states as well as at the National level. Setting up of multi-stakeholders State Financial Inclusion Forum (SFIF) in each PSIG focus state has been agreed as one of the key mechanisms to achieve the objectives under the policy advocacy component at the state level. The SFIF is expected to act as a platform to facilitate effective coordination and synergy among all stakeholders in creating an enabling environment and accelerating the process of financial inclusion in the state. As proposed in the 5th SFIF meeting held in January 2015, the 6th meeting was organized on the underlying theme of “PMJDY–Beyond Opening of Accounts”. -

The study has identified that the banks have been maintaining their prescribed parameters and operating profitably. Further the study notices a difference in the efficiencies and performances of the Banks with regards to Investments, Net profit, Advances, Deposits, and Total assets. As global banks retreated after the Great Recession, the traditional banking model has changed. The prevailing trends suggest fintechs and niche “challenger banks” are biting into banks’ profits and luring their customers away with better quality service at lower prices. Introduction Banking in India Banking in India originated in the last decades of the 18th century. The first banks were The General Bank of India which started in 1786, and the Bank of Hindustan, both of which are now defunct. The oldest bank in existence in India is the State Bank of India, which originated in the Bank of Calcutta in June 1806, which almost immediately became the Bank of Bengal. This was one of the three presidency banks, the other two being the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras, all three of which were established under charters from the British East India Company. For many years the Presidency banks acted as quasi-central banks, as did their successors. The three banks merged in 1921 to form the Imperial Bank of India, which, upon India’s Independence became the State Bank of India. Origin of Banking in India Indian merchants in Calcutta established the Union Bank in 1839, but it failed in 1848 as a consequence of the economic crisis of 1848-49. The Allahabad Bank, established in 1865 and still functioning today, is the oldest Joint Stock bank in India. (Joint Stock Bank: A company that issues stock and requires shareholders to be held liable for the company’s debt) It was not the first though. That honor belongs to the Bank of Upper India, which was established in 1863, and which survived until 1913, when it failed, with some of its assets and liabilities being transferred to the Alliance Bank of Simla. When the American Civil War stopped the supply of cotton to Lancashire from the Confederate States, promoters opened banks to finance trading in Indian cotton. -

CURRENT AFFAIRS= 08-10-2020 RIGHT TO PROTEST The Supreme Court has said that occupying public places for protests is not acceptable and such a space cannot be occupied indefinitely. Key highlights of the judgement: The verdict came on a plea against the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests which had led to blocking of a road in Shaheen Bagh in the national capital last December. It said that public places cannot be occupied indefinitely like during the Shaheen Bagh protests. The judgment upheld the right to peaceful protest against a law but made it unequivocally clear that public ways and public spaces cannot be occupied, and that too indefinitely. In a democracy, the rights of free speech and peaceful protest were indeed “treasured”. They were to be encouraged and respected, the court said. But these rights were also subject to reasonable restrictions imposed in the interest of sovereignty, integrity and public order. Police regulations also weighed in. Fundamental rights do not live in isolation. The right of the protester has to be balanced with the right of the commuter. They have to co-exist in mutual respect. The bench also said that Delhi Police ought to have taken action to clear Shaheen Bagh area from the protesters. It was entirely the responsibility of the administration to prevent encroachments in public spaces. In India, we have more than 900 million smartphone users, but only 40 million consumers also use mobile banking. There could be different factors, including the need for active cooperation between banks and Telecom Business, lack of consumer access, prices, knowledge of the mobile banking app, etc. Mobile banking is a movement powered by mobile networking technologies, one of the world's fastest rising markets. There are obstacles to the implementation of mobile banking systems, as with digital technologies. Banks must strive to develop consumer understanding of mobile banking. They ought to encourage the advantages and efficacy of mobile banking. In India, the SBI has extensively used the spectrum of cell phones. As a leader in providing customers with mobile banking application services, SBI has succeeded in launching several such applications which have rendered banking a far simpler business for customers. This paper explores how customers like the different smartphone apps of SBI, how happy they are with multiple applications and how customers of SBI embrace these applications. The research contrasts consumer perceptions of SBI YONO and other mobile banking facilities.
