In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie. -

ASHBROOK ESTATE 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot TASTING NOTES
ASHBROOK ESTATE 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot TASTING NOTES Ashbrook Estate is one of the oldest established wineries in the Margaret River region located in the heart of Wilyabrup. Truly family owned and operated since 1975, all wines are handpicked and crafted from only estate grown fruit. All processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging are done on site using the Estate’s own private facilities. 2015 sees Ashbrook Estate complete its 37th Vintage, one of only 5 Margaret River wineries to do so! 2012 VINTAGE The warmer than average weather conditions in December were handled well by the vines due to excellent spring growing conditions with good rainfall. Abundant Marri blossom leading into vintage reduced the necessity to apply protective bird netting with weather conditions during the berry development period providing near perfect ripening conditions for all varieties. VINEYARD The “Old Cab” Houghton clone cuttings were collected from the Agricultural Department ‘Source Block’ in the Swan Valley and planted in 1976. Due to its ultimate suitability to the region and increased demand, the “Young Cab” was planted in 1998 from the original vines on the Estate. The “Old Cab” was originally all VSP grown but converted to cane pruned, with +90% Lyre trellis in 1998 with immediate and brilliant results. Coupled with the application of composted mulch, for the past 8years, the Vineyard shows remarkable health and balance producing super premium fruit year in year out. WINEMAKING Hand-picked over 2 weeks the berries are cold soaked, gently plunged and temperature controlled in 4 tonne parcels in open fermenters for gentle and full extraction. -
Ashbrook Estate News Issue 3 – Summer 2019
SUMMER 2019 ASHBROOK ESTATE NEWS WILYABRUP MARGARET RIVER WESTERN AUSTRALIA Welcome! To Ashbrook’s 2019 Summer edition newsletter. Bringing you all the festive season news from our little pocket of vineyard paradise. Vines enjoying summer holidays… So far we have experienced a cool, gentle ripening with temperatures only reaching above 30°C nine times. A rain event on January 22nd purely served to refresh the vines as the wind blew and the sun shone in the immediate days to follow. Hedging and the application of bird netting commenced in the last week of January once canopy growth stopped and fruit ripening took over in the earlier varieties. We anticipate harvest to be underway by the last week of February. In the meantime, we are putting together our picking team, preparing the winery equipment and machinery, monitoring calving, feeding hay rolls to cattle, processing wine orders and managing the cellar door! ASHBROOK ESTATE 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot TASTING NOTES
ASHBROOK ESTATE 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot TASTING NOTES Ashbrook Estate is one of the oldest established wineries in the Margaret River region located in the heart of Wilyabrup. Truly family owned and operated since 1975, all wines are handpicked and crafted from only Estate grown fruit. All processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging are done on site using the Estate’s own private facilities. 2016 sees Ashbrook Estate complete its 38th Vintage, one of only 5 Margaret River wineries to do so! James Halliday says: “This estate is one of the quietest and highest achievers in Australia, maintaining excellent viticulture and fastidious winemaking.” 2013 VINTAGE With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring. -
