  • John Pickard-Frank Provo Collection
Thousand Oaks Library American Radio Archives John Pickard-Frank Provo Collection Introduction The John Pickard-Frank Provo Collection of the American Radio Archives documents Pickard's career in the early days of Australian radio, as well as the collaboration between Pickard and Provo that lasted nearly 40 years, and resulted in radio programs such as Wendy Warren and the News and Young Doctor Malone, as well as television programs such as Concerning Miss Marlowe and From these Roots. Biographies John Pickard was born on April 6, 1910 in Sydney, Australia. He entered the University of Sydney to study law in 1927, yet also acted in plays as a member of the Sydney University Drama Society. It was during this time that Pickard, intrigued by the new medium of radio, tried his hand at writing a radio play titled The Tomb of Osiris. This work was performed on various stations throughout Australia, and is considered by some to be the first original Australian radio play. By 1931, acting in radio productions had become Pickard's main occupation, and he was considered one of the brightest young actors on Australian radio during his tenure with the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company) Players, whose performances were broadcast on station 2FC in Sydney. He continued writing and directing plays as well, being promoted to the Head of Drama Productions at the Australian Broadcasting Company in 1933. Pickard wrote series such as Crime Club, and also adapted American programs like One Man's Family, in which he substituted Australian settings, situations, and colloquialisms. By 1935, however, Pickard wanted to try something new and left for the United States in August of that year.

  • Autism and New Media: Disability Between Technology and Society
1 Autism and new media: Disability between technology and society Amit Pinchevski (lead author) Department of Communication and Journalism, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel John Durham Peters Department of Communication Studies, University of Iowa, USA Abstract This paper explores the elective affinities between autism and new media. Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provides a uniquely apt case for considering the conceptual link between mental disability and media technology. Tracing the history of the disorder through its various media connections and connotations, we propose a narrative of the transition from impaired sociability in person to fluent social media by network. New media introduce new affordances for people with ASD: The Internet provides habitat free of the burdens of face-to-face encounters; high-tech industry fares well with the purported special abilities of those with Asperger’s syndrome; and digital technology offers a rich metaphorical depository for the condition as a whole. Running throughout is a gender bias that brings communication and technology into the fray of biology versus culture. Autism invites us to rethink our assumptions about communication in the digital age, accounting for both the pains and possibilities it entails. 2 Keywords: Autism (ASD), Asperger’s Syndrome, new media, disability studies, interaction and technology, computer-mediated communication, gender and technology Authors’ bios Amit Pinchevski is a senior lecturer in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University, Israel. He is the author of By Way of Interruption: Levinas and the Ethics of Communication (2005) and co-editor of Media Witnessing: Testimony in the Age of Mass Communication (with Paul Frosh, 2009) and Ethics of Media (with Nick Couldry and Mirca Madianou, 2013).

  • The Legend of Moondyne Joe These Notes to Accompany the Legend of Moondyne Joe Provide Suggestions for Classroom Activities Base
The Legend of Moondyne Joe These notes to accompany The Legend of Moondyne Joe provide suggestions for classroom activities based on or linked to the book's text and illustrations and highlight points for discussion. Synopsis Not known for gunfights or robbing banks, it was the convict bushranger Moondyne Joe’s amazing ability to escape every time he was placed behind bars that won him fame and the affection of the early settlers. Wearing a kangaroo-skin cape and possum-skin slippers, he found freedom in the wooded valleys and winding creeks at Moondyne Hills. Joe was harmless, except possibly to a few settlers whose horses had a ‘mysterious’ way of straying. When blamed for the disappearance of a farmer’s prize stallion the colonial authorities were soon to find out that there wasn’t a jail that could hold Joe! On Writing “The Legend of Moondyne Joe” By Mark Greenwood I wanted to create a fun story, accurate in detail, about a strength of spirit that was nurtured by life in the new colony. A book that would bring to life a legend from our colourful history. I believe by having an appreciation of their own history, children better understand themselves, their community and their culture. The Legend of Moondyne Joe aims to encourage interest in our convict history to a wide audience of middle to upper primary and lower secondary age children. The picture book format allows illustrations to bring characters and settings to life. Illustrations help readers to develop a feel for bygone eras that words alone cannot portray.

  • Scholarship Boys and Children's Books
Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature.

  • Masculine Caregivers in Australian Children's Fictions 1953-2001
Chapter 3 Literary Reconfigurations of Masculinity I: Masculine caregivers in Australian children's fictions 1953-2001 'You're a failure as a parent, Joe Edwards!' Mavis Thorpe ClarkThe Min-Min (1966:185) It is easy to understand why men who grew up at a time when their fathers were automatically regarded as the head of the household and the breadwinner should feel rather threatened by the contemporary challenge to those central features of traditional masculine status ... Hugh Mackay Generations (1997:90) As cultural formations produced for young Australian readers, the children's fictions discussed in this chapter offer a diachronic study of literary processes employed to reconfigure schemas of adult masculinities.1 The pervasive interest in the transformation of Australian society's public gender order and its domestic gender regimes in the late twentieth century is reflected in children's fictions where reconfigurations of masculine subjectivities are represented with increasing narrative and discursive complexity. The interrogation of masculinity—specifically as fathering/caregiving—shifts in importance from a secondary level story in post-war realist fictions to the focus of the primary level story by the century's end. Thematically its significance changes too, from the reconfigurations of social relations in the domestic sphere that subverts the doxa of patriarchal legitimacy, to narratives that problematise masculinity in the public gender An earlier version of this chapter is published in Papers: Explorations into Children's Literature, 9: 1 (April 1999): 31-40. order.
