*** Rugby Trivia ***

This week’s question:

When was the first RFU Club Cup competition and who won it ?

First person to the bar after the game with the right answer wins a free pint!

26th September match programme answer:

How many test matches did Willie John McBride play for the Lions ?

Willie John went on five Lions tours and played 17 Test Matches (1962 - 2, 1966 - 3, 1968 - 4, 1971 - 4, 1974 - 4 as Captain). Chairman’s Message

After kicking off the season with two league wins it’s been a tough three weeks of defeats to strong opposition, especially against league leaders last Saturday. Our cause hasn’t been helped by a lengthy injury list, leading to several team changes each week.

Today is all about returning to winning ways against our opponents Swanage and Wareham RFC, who we welcome to the Sports Park.

Swanage and Wareham come from near ’s Jurassic Coast but I’m sure they will be anything but dinosaurs. They have a similar league record to ourselves this season. So it’s important that we make home advantage pay and get our league campaign back onto a positive footing.

I’d like to give one last reminder for our Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday 30th October, featuring the inspirational Willie John McBride. Tickets are selling out fast. We have to finalise numbers by Friday 23rd October, so if you haven’t purchased your seats yet please act quickly. I will be at the club from 11am on Saturday 17th October for what will probably be your last chance to book a place.

Playing News

2nd & 3rd Teams

After a couple of tough weeks against strong opposition from Reading and Redingensians, the seconds returned to winning ways with a well deserved 34-19 victory over Marlow last week.

Good news too from the thirds who were back to their best with a comprehensive victory over Wheatley seconds a fortnight ago. Influential in the win were returning legends Rae Young and Laney. The latter’s forceful display gained him two tries and the man of the match award.

Youth Rugby

Our Minis and Juniors continue to thrive. Look out for news of our recent Girls Rugby Open Day and the Grove Festival on our website and in the next home match programme.

And there’s still time to sign up for the 2 day CoacHclass sessions on 29th-30th October for U7s-U13s and U14s-U17s, run by London Wasps.

See www.wallingfordmjrfc.org.uk for more information.

Wallingford RFC is a thriving rugby club, named Sports Club of the Year in the Sports Awards 2008.

The club’s recent playing record has been outstanding. The 1st XV were promoted in both 06/07 and 07/08 seasons, and now compete in South West 1 East League.

Our 2nd XV has been equally successful, now playing in the Berks Bucks and Oxon Premier A League, also after two consecutive years of promotion. The recently formed 3rd XV plays in Berks Bucks and Oxon 2 South League.

The club’s impressive Colts team is the stepping stone immediately below senior rugby and competes in Berks Bucks and Oxon Colts League Division 3.

For many year’s Youth Rugby at Wallingford has been very strong. Over 300 young people enjoy Mini and Junior rugby every Sunday, supported by over 40 qualified volunteer coaches.

The excellence of our youth programme is recognised by the RFU, gaining the club not only the Club Mark Seal of Approval but also the title Southern Region Club of the Year 2009.

Off the field Wallingford RFC is also flourishing. The club’s RugFest extravanganza brought hundreds to Hithercroft on the Lions’ 2nd Test Day. Our Sportsman’s Dinners have packed out the Sports Park’s function room to hear from legends Derek Quinnell and Phil Bennett.

Since its founding in 1967 Wallingford RFC has become a major presence both on the Oxfordshire sporting scene and in the wider context of amateur rugby in Britain.

As a club we are committed to build on this and look forward with confidence to furthering the enjoyment of rugby football in this area for many years to come. Wallingford RFC Contacts
