Week 19: Individuals versus Groups (9 items) The three course textbooks all offer an excellent overview of the area. Brown (2000) reviews some classic research examining group and individual performance. Baron and Kerr (2003) provide us with a good overview of the American perspective, there is much more research in the US into this area. Hogg and Vaughan (2005 or 2008) allow us to apply the issues to other research areas and the real world. Karau and Williams (1993) offer a good overview of social loafing, and Kerr and Tindale (2004) provide an excellent summary of empirical evidence in this area. Other articles are just a flavour of the area. For example, the special issue guest edited by Turner and Pratkanis (1998) provides many new perspectives on ; Postmes, Spears, and Cihangir (2001) talk about how group norms affect group decision making; and Abrams, Hopthrow, et al. (2006) show that is not inevitable – in fact, when groups are engaged in moderate social drinking they will look out for each other and become less attracted to risk.
