But the child is not yet the age of bar/bat mitzvah--what You may be surprised to learn that there is plenty of precedent in to do? This question is not theoretical – someone asked it a few the Jewish tradition for a minor reading Torah – the Mishnah months ago. In turn, I asked myself, “How do we find a way (Megilah 4:6) allows it, and from this source flows a long line of respond ‘Amen’ to the child’s blessing?” In the paragraphs below, legal precedent allowing a minor who can understand the signifi- I am going to give the answer, but I also want to share not only how cance of the honor of reading from the Torah to do so. And yet work begins. in our deliberations a common consensus emerged: how can we say When I think about such inquiries, I do not try to answer “no” to a child in our community who wants to read Torah, even if them alone; I lean upon the wisdom not only of our tradition, at a young age? but of the Conservative movement by looking to see if this In the end, the committee trusted me not only to figure out question has been addressed by the Committee on Jewish Law a decision, but also to communicate with our community about and Standards (CJLS) – a committee of the Rabbinical Assembly what was decided – another important part of the process. I attended Education and Youth Director the MOB(E)’s inaugural event on Sunday, April 20th, and I could relate to the glowing experiences being reported out of the Sisterhood. Our breakfast gathered together approximately sixty men of varying generations, professional interests, and geographic histories, and yet there was a compelling sense of commonality, of real brotherhood. We all have come to Durham & Chapel Hill through different paths, have made this area our home, and care about Jewish life here. As informal and good natured the setting was, the gathering also had a centralizing and heartfelt conviction.

Social Action in Action

The Social Action Committee is looking forward to gearing up activities at Beth El this next year. We realize that our membership already participates in so many wonderful programs on their own. We would like to collect an inventory of these activities so that we may better support your efforts. We'd also like to plan new social action activities to enhance what we currently do. Please help us gather this information by sending us a note detailing the social action activities in which you are currently engaged regardless of whether it is or is not associated with Beth El. This will help us form an inventory of members' interests and embark on stepping-up our social justice actions.

Please contact Debbie Goldstein or Jacki Resnick with your responses &/or questions.

Food & Toiletry Drives

Thank you to everyone who participated in our hunger relief efforts over the past programming year!

Through Laura Quigley's Yom Kippur-Pesach challenge, we donated 1804 pounds to local agencies & individuals!

Our "Collect for the Omer" honoring Laura's efforts far exceeded our goal of 10 pounds per day of the omer by bringing in 786 pounds of food!

In addition, we collected $791 for Jewish Family Services to help with their hunger relief efforts, and at Purim you gave almost $1000 that we passed along to Urban Ministries of Durham & the Interfaith Council in Chapel Hill. The tzedakah you give during weekday minyanim has been used to give out almost $800 in food cards to those who come to our doors seeking help. Team Beth El raised over $6000 for the Durham & Chapel Hill/Carrboro Crop Hunger Walks!

Remember: our food drive & toiletry drives are ongoing year-round!

"A double-mitzvah": Link your HT VIC card to our school and earn money for the Talmud Torah while helping others in need. Dear: Beth El Members and Friends From: Yetta Brandt and Michelle Shrott Date: May 2013 Re: YOM KIPPUR MEMORIAL BOOKLET

Dear Friends,

We are writing to you now about the Memorial Booklet, which is being prepared for use during the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. The purpose of the Memorial Booklet is to aid us in keeping the names of the departed ever before us as a symbol of reverent and undying love. Because the Yizkor prayer specifically makes reference to a pledge to charity to perpetuate the memory and ideals of our beloved departed, the Beth El Board of Directors has ruled that any charitable offering shall be wholly voluntary in keeping with the sacred spirit of the occasion. Therefore, we do not have a schedule of mandatory fees to honor the memory of your loved ones, but each person may respond with a contribution in accord with his or her own inner prompting. If you wish to have the name(s) of your beloved departed listed in this special booklet, please complete the form below and mail it with your check to: Beth El Synagogue (Attn: Memorial Booklet) 1004 Watts Street, Durham, NC 27701.

Checks should be made payable to Beth El with "Memorial Booklet" noted in the memo line.

Please print information: Remembered by:
