St. Paul’s St. Paul’s church, built in 1880 and designed by the English architect George Edmund Street, was the first protestant church to be built in Rome, following the complete unification of Italy in 1870. It is part of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe and situated in the central location of Via Nazionale, Castro Pretorio. The church is built in the Gothic Revival style and the tower contains the largest Carillon of bells in Rome, at 23. Within the church are mosaics making up the largest works of Pre- Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, so fine that they have been designated a National Monument by the Italian Government. At the west end there are also mosaics by the American artist George Breck.

Located in the crypt of St.Paul’s is the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center (JNRC), a day center for refugees in Rome, founded in 1982. The centre offers services including breakfast, distribution of hygiene products and clothing, employment clinic and job skills training, language, literacy and computer classes, as well as therapeutic and recreational activities.

Adjacent to the church is the old rectory, also designed by Street, an eclectic take on a Venetian Palazzo and containing some ancient pieces of marble and neo-classical fireplaces from the

demolished Palazzo Torlonia in the Piazza Venezia. Today it houses the church offices and Parish Room/Song School on the ground floor, on the first floor the Collegio, where the organ scholar’s room is situated, on the second floor a Library and conference room and the Rector’s apartment above.

Music and Choirs The church enjoys an eclectic programme of services and concerts throughout the year, being one of the most sought-after venues for classical music in the city of Rome. The space is used for concerts by a variety of external musicians Monday through Saturday and the church music department runs its own concert series on Sunday evenings. The pattern of worship includes two Sung Eucharists on a Sunday, one in English and the other in Spanish, and a selection of additional special services throughout the year. The intention for the future is to increase the offering of these additional services, in particular choral , currently standing at around six per year. A service of Morning Prayer is also said twice per week as well as Sung Compline happening once a week.

For the English Sung Eucharist and special services there is an English-speaking made up of paid professionals and auditioned amateurs. Their repertoire is varied and, although mostly based in renaissance polyphony, spans from Byrd to Kodály to Negro Spirituals.

There is a second (Italian-speaking) volunteer choir that rehearses at St. Paul’s (for which it is the organ scholar’s duty to accompany and occasionally take rehearsals) and sings for concerts and occasional services.

The church additionally enjoys close ties with its sister church, All Saints’, the Church of England chaplaincy. Closely linked to All Saints’ is the ‘New Chamber Singers’, an auditioned choir with a full season of concerts and whose director of music is the organist of St Paul’s, Stefano Vasselli. The organ scholar has historically participated musically and otherwise in the life of All Saints’ and of the ‘New Chamber Singers’.

Instruments The organ is a ‘Mascioni’ instrument of 3 manuals and 40 stops, built in 1963. It is an eclectic instrument, rich in variety of stops, powerful and suitable for a wide repertoire. The electric action console built according to the statements of the "Deliberazione Organistica di Trento", is situated in front of the Holy Sacrament Chapel, but can be moved to the central nave for concerts. The organ is used frequently for recitals as well as services and has been played by including Martin Sander, Daniel Roth, Josep Solé Coll, titular organist of St Peter’s Basilica and the English organists and .
