*Indicates deceased CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Newcastle cricket season started on a sombre note with the passing of Robert Holland in September 2017. Shortly before his death Robert was honoured with a standing room only function organised by his beloved Southern Lakes Cricket Club and held at Toronto Workers Club. This event brought together a cross section of the local, state and national cricket community and was a fitting tribute to a champion cricketer, who was also one of the most decent individuals I have ever met.

On a representative level it was strong year for the NDCA based teams. The Newcastle team in the NSW Country Championships were undefeated in the three round games played in Inverell and qualified for the final. Centuries to Mark Littlewood and Joe Price were highlights of the carnival. The team then won the final with a decisive victory Central Coast at Bowral Oval. The team chased down a competitive 234 in the 47th over for the loss of 7 in a measured run chase. Congratulations to coach Shane Burley, Mark Littlewood, managers David Redden & Alan Nichols , and the team on securing Newcastle’s 15th NSW Country title in the competitions 30 year history. Joe Price and Nick Foster secured selection in the NSW Country team that won the national championships. Congratulations to Joe Price who was named player of the tournament and selected in the Australian Merit XI.

The Blasters won the Regional T20 Plan B Bash being undefeated in the 3 round games in Maitland and earning a spot in the finals at the SCG. They easily accounted for Northern Rivers Rock in the semi-finals and then defeated Orana Outlaws in a competitive final. In the competitions third season, this was the first time a Newcastle team has won the silverware. In an exciting development for next season, the NDCA will field two combined teams in this competition – the Blasters will be joined by a new team representing the Lake Macquarie council area, the Lake Mac Attack. Congratulations to coach Brad Bannister, captain Nathan Price, manager David Redden and the team on a successful campaign. Nathan Price was named player of the competition.

Newcastle Steel missed out on the playoffs in the NSW Premier League T20 for the first time in 3 seasons. Good wins over Randwick and Easts, then a defeat by Manly left the Steel needing a win over Sutherland in the final match. The Steel ran into a Shane Watson inspired Sutherland and fell 7 runs short in chasing 161. Once again the chance to play against some of the best players in NSW on top class grounds delivers a great opportunity for Newcastle cricketers.

Blasters win Plan B Big Bash In the local competition Wests were the main story being major and minor premiers in the 1st grade premiership as well as winning the one day Tom Locker Cup. Wests were the best team throughout the season and thoroughly deserved the rewards of their hard work. Skipper James King played one of the best innings seen in a first grade final scoring 93no on a heavy outfield and was duly awarded the Ken Clifford medal for player of the match.

Wests Captain - James King

This was Wests first competition victory since 1965-66 and was well celebrated in the Lambton area. Charlestown took out the Club Championship with a record winning margin. Congratulations to the Charlestown club on a very successful year in all grades.

In an exciting initiative, the Newcastle City Council came on board as the main sponsor of our T20 competition. The NCC Summer Bash was founded and it created widespread interest in local T20 cricket. In the best T20 match I have seen locally, the Sea Dragons from University defeated the Pumas from Hamilton in the final at No.1 Sports Ground. Chasing 147, the Sea Dragons chased down the total with one ball to spare. Thank you to the

Newcastle City Council for their support with this competition and in particular Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and General Manager Jeremy Bath. This competition has the potential to become a showpiece for Newcastle cricket.

The Lord Mayor practises her catching under supervision of the chairman

At a junior representative level, the Newcastle teams performed solidly without winning any major trophies. The Kookaburra, Bradman and Colts teams all had some promising moments during their carnivals but in the end were not consistent enough to challenge for the finals.

I would like to thank the media for their continued support of Newcastle cricket – Josh Callinan from the Newcastle Herald, Mitch Hughes and his team from NBN TV and Craig Hamilton from ABC Radio. I would also like to thank our major sponsors and supporters – CBA, Newcastle Herald, Kingsgrove Sports, PKF Auditors, Warren Tenant Foundation, and Kookaburra Sports. I would also like to thank our major partners for their support – Cricket NSW, Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Council.

Winning Team Sea Dragons

To conclude, I would like to thank the many volunteers who give freely of their time to support the NDCA and my fellow NDCA committee members for their support and guidance during the summer. Special mention to Newcastle captain Mark Littlewood who is standing down from representative cricket after a magnificent career. Newcastle cricket has had great success under Mark’s leadership and Mark, along with Coach Shane Burley, has helped create a very positive culture within the Newcastle representative cricket system.

Looking forward to an equally successful season 2018-19. P. H. (Paul) Marjoribanks (Chairman – NDCA)

The Management Committee appointed the following persons as Chairman of the standing committees for season 2017/2018:

Appeals Committee Terry Morgan Judiciary Committee Michael McIntyre OAM Selection Greg Arms Fixtures and Permits Committee Alan Nichols Umpires Appointments Tim Caimakamis

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July 2017 saw Paul Wilson and Johnny Watkins inducted into Life membership of the association. Both were received warmly by those in attendance and both spoke with humility and talked about their time in Newcastle cricket and beyond

The NDCA website (www.ndca.asn.au) again proved a major source for cricket followers of the local competition with well over 70,000 visits on all various pages of the site throughout the season

The Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA) continued to appoint as many umpires as possible to Saturday Grade fixtures and the Sunday competitions. An offseason campaign again will hopefully see increased persons on field for the coming season

Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Country Cricket New South Wales (CCNSW) are also thanked for their support of Newcastle cricket

Newcastle City Council (NCC) and Lake Macquarie City Council (LMCC) are also thanked for providing many grounds that are available to allow competitions to go ahead as smoothly as possible throughout the season

The Committee discussed many issues during the season including the rules of competition, grounds issues, T20 Sundays, registration of players, proposed name changes, one (1) day washouts, results into my cricket on a timely basis each week and the overall representative program that can effect NDCA grade and weekend competitions. Many hours of debate occurs within committee each month as we continue to deal with issues effecting the competition, enquiries rulings, ground allocations and maintenance of ovals and grounds. Attendance by committee members at each meeting has been excellent with meeting generally being held on a monthly basis or as needs determine

The Grade Administrator Alan Nichols and his Fixtures and Permits is the busiest committee within the association dealing with grounds, substitutes each round, interruptions of local rules and protests from clubs where a dispute occurs on a particular day.

This season in review the Newcastle City Council (NCC) Big Bash has commenced and we are appreciative of the council for its support of this concept and monies injected into it. Prize monies awarded to teams for this competition is well received by participating clubs and a continuation of this relationship with council is certainly one we will continue to foster. The second Grade McCormack Cup was also introduced this season with Charlestown being the inaugural winners.

Clubs and associations - My personal thanks are extended to all members of management and members of sub-committees who give up their time freely to assist in the running of the various competitions held. Grade/Association Secretaries are also thanked for giving up their time voluntarily to assist their respective clubs and the NDCA as a whole. Thanks also are expressed to the Umpires association and the appointments committee for supplying as many umpies as possible on field especially on Saturday grade days where number in particular to fill lower grades are so important.

R. D. (Royce) McCormack – Secretary NDCA

My thanks to the Management Committee for the 2nd grade one day trophy named in my honour thank you

very much and congratulations to Charlestown as the inaugural winners of the Royce McCormack Cup

OBITUARY Robert “Dutchy” Holland Wisden’s Obituary

HOLLAND, ROBERT GEORGE, OAM, died on September 17, aged 70. Late-blooming leg-spinner Bob Holland gave hope to a generation of thirty somethings by making his Test debut for Australia in 1984 at the age of 38. He took ten wickets in his third match, to end a winning streak by West Indies, and in his next claimed a five-for at Lord's, which would prove beyond Shane Warne. Holland was an unlikely destroyer: greying at the temples, he sent down his teasing leg-breaks and googlies from an almost mincing run, with a twirl of the wrist just before he began the upswing of his . Leg-spin was an endangered species at the time, especially in Australia, but Holland had old fashioned virtues - seductive flight, disciplined length, a well-disguised top-spinner and a sparingly used wrong'un - all dispensed with a ready smile.

That smile might just have derived from the unlikeliness of it all. Although he was born near Sydney, "Dutchy" Holland lived most of his life in more remote parts of New South Wales, and played his club cricket around Newcastle, 100 miles north of Sydney. Rick McCosker, another Australian Test player who grew up away from the bright lights, said: "Dutchy loved his family - he lived for them and his cricket, and he was the epitome of a good Aussie bloke."

Holland had made his way to the Baggy Green by skill and persistence. From the mid-1960s he was a regular for representative teams in Newcastle. One of his earliest outings was against M. J. K. Smith's England tourists of 1965-66 - but none for 58 in six overs hardly hinted at a rosy future. He did not play in the Sheffield Shield until January 1979, when he was 32, and his progress was steady but unspectacular until 1984-85, when he took seven wickets in NSW's match against the West Indian tourists at the spin-friendly SCG. A week later, at Brisbane, Holland became Australia's third-oldest Test debutant.

He had a quiet start, dismissing Larry Gomes and Jeff Dujon at , where defeat spelled a tearful end for 's captaincy. But he ensured selection for the next Test with a career-best nine for 83 against South Australia at Sydney, and claimed two more wickets in 's first Test in charge, although West Indies won heavily again to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead. Holland sat out the Melbourne Test, but returned for the finale, on familiar turf at the SCG. After Australia batted solidly for 471, he got to work on a helpful, dark tinged pitch. He took six for 54 - including Viv Richards for 15 - as West Indies collapsed for 163, then claimed four more in the follow-on to finish with ten for 144. It was West Indies' first Test defeat for more than three years, and their first by an innings since 1968-69. John Benaud wrote: "Bob came out to the fence after a particularly successful over. The crowd rose to him as one, some leaning over the fence, reaching out. Bob took it all in that graceful, dignified, modest way, flashing a grin with a slight wave of the hand that had on it the golden spinning finger."

In the 1985 Ashes, Holland's five for 68 at Lord's contributed to Australia's only victory of the series. less in the first innings, he twirled down 32 tight overs in the second and after the early dismissal of Tim Robinson, later claimed the last four, including top-scorer for 85. "It was a weird tableau," wrote Matthew Engel of this cat and mouse battle. "A grey-haired leg-spinner from the Nursery End to our bare-headed hero, while fielders in Baggy Green caps hovered and an airship progressed serenely over Regent's Park. At tea one half-expected the teams to be presented to George V."

The strength of the home saw Holland reduced to a containing role, which blunted his effectiveness as England won 3-1. But back in Australia he grabbed another ten wickets at Sydney, to square the series against New Zealand. Two more caps followed before he bowed out with 34 wickets at 39. Holland finished his first class career in 1987-88 with a season for Wellington in New Zealand: he was 41, but claimed 31 victims in seven matches, including seven for 69 at Auckland.

He was associated with the Southern Lakes District Cricket Club on New South Wales' northern coast - as player, administrator, fundraiser, groundsman, junior coach and general organiser - for more than 50 years. Two days before his death from an aggressive brain tumour, the club organised a tribute night, compered by the former Australian captain Mark Taylor. Helped by the camaraderie of family and friends, Holland was able to defy his illness and enjoy one last hurrah.

A champion gentlemen to the end we miss you Dutch

NSW NEWCASTLE ZONE ACADEMY REPORT

The Cricket NSW Academy – Newcastle program again continued to develop high quality players from across our region. There has never been a better time to be a talented young cricketer in our state with opportunities and exposure to high level coaching and cricket, more readily available than ever. The Cricket NSW pathway is multi-level entry and multi-level exit meaning that it is increasing difficult for talented players to go unnoticed. The 2017 program was carefully planned and aligned to the CNSW Curriculum; a framework to support the development of players and guide consistent coaching.

The coaching panel for 2017 was:

Mark Littlewood (Head Coach), Benn West (Strength and Conditioning), Shane Burley, Nathan Price, Burt Cockley, Mark Curry, David Somerville (Assistant Coaches).

The 2017/18 program was a pre-season based program for U/14 – U/19 players that incorporated a wide variety of sessions that ranged from strength and conditioning, theory and mental strategy, skills and drills, nets, games and game scenario sessions. The program had numerous combined sessions with the Central Coast Academy which allowed the players to not only test their skills against other talented cricketers, but also provided exposure to the talented coaches from the Central Coast program.

One particular combined session was a day trip to the SCG Indoor Centre where players developed their skills in the freshly renovated centre where many of the great recent players have honed their skills. The players worked exceptionally hard and were lucky enough to be guided by guest speaker Tim Laing, former NSW and South Australian representative.

Guest speaker turned assistant coach, Burt Cockley, provided a terrific insight into life as a professional athlete and the roller coaster ride that has been his journey. The players were encouraged to embrace mistakes and take risks in their training. They were taught that hard work and dedication will lead to confidence under pressure. Routines and mental strategies were passed on to assist with the execution of skills under pressure.

I would like to thank both the players and their parents for their contribution to the program. Every coach remarked what a well-mannered and mature group of young men we had gathered. It was truly a pleasure to lead such terrific young men in discovering their games and best versions of themselves as cricketers. With many of the players being talented athletes across numerous sports, parents were incredibly busy transporting and supporting which was equally as impressive and allowed the program to function at full capacity.

I would like to particularly thank the coaching staff this year for their professionalism and commitment to the program. There was wealth of experience across the group and many moments where I myself learnt and developed through the knowledge being shared. Every coach was committed to not only improving our players but also improving as a coach. We will continue to improve and ask ourselves how we can make sessions better, more engaging and more beneficial for our athletes.

All players made significant improvements and numerous individual players went on to have great success during the season and were recognised accordingly.

SENIOR MEN’S

From the Coach – An overview of Newcastle, Steel & Blasters

After an excellent Pre Season which included the addition of Nathan Price returning to the Squad after playing in Sydney for last few seasons and making a number of 2nd XI appearances, we were also very lucky to have Burt Cockley also return as a Bowling Coach and eventually also as a player.

Both these guys brought their experience to the program and I’m sure as well as their on-field performances they also epitomised what Newcastle Cricket is and has been about for a long time

The Steel’s first game was against Randwick-Petersham in the NSW T20 Premier Competition which is arguably the best T20 Club competition in the world and something all cricketers in Newcastle should be striving to be a part of.

Randwick have proved to be our bogey side over our first few years in the competition and it was great to get a first up win against them to start our campaign

Newcastle batted first and compiled 134 off our 20 overs with Joey Price scoring 66 off 44 balls (4 x 4s & 4 x 6s) handy contributions from our middle ensured we posted a competitive score. Our bowling and fielding was excellent with everyone contributing to restrict Randwick to 129 with Nick Foster the pick of the bowlers with 2-15 off 3.

We then had a break from T20 Cricket and travelled to Inverell to compete in the Country Championships.

Our first game was against Central Northern and we batted first and posted 8-274 off our 50 with Mark Littlewood notching up an outstanding 116 & was well supported by Nathan Price who made 87 as they put on 142 for the 3rd wicket.

In reply Central North were 1-88 in reply before we did an excellent job and restricted them to 7/215 off their 50 overs. Best performer with the ball was Pat Darwen with 2-39 off his 10 and a highlight was 3 run outs in an excellent fielding performance. The win also helped us to gain 1 bonus point

Next, we came up against North Coastal and we played some good aggressive cricket to post a double bonus point win. Batting first we posted 8-264 with Joey Price scoring 68 off 69 and 40s to Jeff Goninan and Nathan Price as well as some selfless batting down the order put us in a good position. We did some early damage with the ball to have North Coastal 4-46 and in an excellent team bowling performance with 4 bowlers taking 2 wickets we dismissed North Coastal for 118.

In our last pool game of the Tournament we faced fellow Country heavyweights and defending Champions Western with the winner of this game winning this pool and progressing through to the final to play the winner of the Southern Pool and Bradman Oval Bowral.

On a tough batting deck we won the toss and batted first and worked hard to post 7/223 of our 50 overs. The innings was underpinned by an outstanding knock by Joey Price who compiled 111 in what proved to be a match winning knock. Western put themselves in a good position of 1-78 in reply but the team showed outstanding character to dismiss Western for 160 and win the group phase of the Tournament. Our spinners proved to be outstanding with Dylan Hunter in his first tournament for Newcastle at Senior Level taking 4- 22 off his 10 in tandem with Nick Foster who took 2-22 off 7. Man of the Match Joey Price also took 2-28 off 8 for a brilliant all round performance.

Back into T20 mode and we hosted a double header against perennial heavyweights Easts & Manly at an outstanding Waratah Oval facility.

In the first game Easts won the Toss and sent us in and we were able to post a very good score of 9/171 with James Rushford top scoring with 33 off 26 and Jeff Goninan 31 off 26 and Adrian Chad 29 off 23 and once again some very selfless batting by other around them, something that epitomised our whole season. In an excellent bowling display Easts were only able to make 9/140 in reply highlighted by Dan Morton taking the Steels first ever 5 wicker haul in the competition with a brilliant 5-32. To take us to 2 wins from 2 games.

Next game was against a very strong Manly side that included a number of players with first class and Big Bash experience. We won the toss and batted first and after Joey Price hitting Chris Green down the ground for 6 first ball of the innings he unfortunately tore his hamstring not long after and had to retire. A few guys made starts but no one was able to post more than 20s as we battled to 137 off 8 on a very good deck. Manly in reply ran us down in 15 overs with Australian U19 star Jack Edwards blasting 71 off 46 balls supported by ex Big Bash & First Class player Adam Crosthwaite notching 41 off 20.

Before our next game in the NSW Premier T20 Competition we travelled to the historical Bradman Oval at Bowral to play Southern Pool winners Central Coast in the Final as the showpiece of NSW Country Cricket. Joey Price was ruled out from his hamstring injury he sustained against Manly with Jonty Durrheim coming in as a replacement. Central Coast had been strengthened this year by former Big Bash and First Class cricketer Simon Keen who had relocated to the Central Coast. Central Coast won the toss and batted first with Burt Cockley taking a wicket in the first over. Central Coast fought hard with Keen top scoring with 42 off 44 to post 8-234. Jonty & Burt took 2 wickets each with Nathan Price bowling a crucial 10 over stint for 1-17. Newcastle got off to a flying start including taking 15 off the 2nd over before losing 4 for 37 to have Central Coast up and about. A superb innings of 59 (6x4s) by the Skipper Mark Littlewood who was batting with a badly injured finger got us close before Dylan Hunter blasted 56 off 44 (4x4 & 3 x6s) to ensure we got the win with 2 overs to spare. The meant Newcastle won its 3rd title in the last 5 years which has included a record of 16 wins 1 loss and 1 draw over that period in the Country Championships to truly be the dominate program.

Our last pool game in the T20 competition meant we travelled to Glenn McGrath Oval at Sutherland, with the winner of that game progressing through to the finals series. Sutherland put out a strong team that included Shane Watson who is still one of the best T20 players in World and also Big Bash leg spinner Dan Fallins. After surviving an early onslaught from Watson who blasted 41 off 26, in form batsman Jamie Brown took to us scoring 69 off 39 with 3 x 4s and 5 x 6s. Brown went on to score 4 x First Grade 100s after this game. Joey Price recovered from his hamstring injury and took 3-21 off 4 as Sutherland posted 161 off 20. In reply Joey Price and James Rushford got us off to a good start before Jeff Goninan played a brilliant hand with 55 off 37 (1x4 & 4x6s) to get us close but unfortunately, we fell 8 runs short in the end.

It was a season of great highlights with the quality of people involved in the program a credit to all of them. It saw a number of debutants and players of the future across the Steel and Country Championships including Jed Dickson, Dylan Hunter, Adrian Chad and Andrew Sommerville. All of these guys contributed as much off the field as they did on. The training sessions were excellent and reflective of the results we were able to achieve and I cannot thank the commitment and sacrifices the guys made over a long program. It was great to see Joey Price and Nick Foster go on and represent NSW Country along with our Manager David Redden and to win the National Title

I can’t thank enough the people who supported the program David Redden is a blessing to Newcastle Cricket and I would be lost without him. Alan Nichols and our Physio Tim Schneider help us succeed this year as well as Chairman Paul Marjoribanks and his board who are always great supporters of the program. Greg Arms and Geoff Smith were brilliant in a thankless task as selectors and it was great to see them at training sessions and games. Blasters Coach Brad Bannister was outstanding and we worked together to ensure training was organised, intensive and competitive and it was great to see the Blasters hold the trophy aloft at the SCG as one of the highlights of the Representative Program. Specially mention to Burt Cockley also who was our bowling coach who ended up playing and was amazing for our program.

Lastly I cannot pay tribute enough to our leader not just in name but in character more importantly, Mark Littlewood who led from the front all year and his innings in the final showed his toughness, character, passion for Newcastle Cricket and competitiveness. This was just a snap shot of what he did every time he put the Newcastle cap on. Mark has made the decision to retire from Representative Cricket in a career that saw him represent South Australia U19s & 2nd XI and ACT. More importantly for us he was our Captain and leader for 10 years including being the inaugural Skipper for the last 5 seasons in our campaign into the NSW Premier competition. His leadership has no doubt played a huge part in our successful integration into that program. Mark was proud of those who wore the cap before him and knew what it meant and it is up to the younger generation to carry the baton into the future also and ensure Newcastle remains the premier representative program.

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

David’s View

The Newcastle Zone Men’s team became champions of NSW Country again after a convincing performance at the Northern Pool Championships in Inverell and then a tense 3-wicket win over Central Coast in the State Final at the magnificent Bradman Oval in Bowral.

Zone selectors chose the following 13-man team to participate in the Northern Pool Championships in Inverell:

Mark Littlewood © Jeff Goninan James Rushford Nathan Price Joseph Price Patrick Darwen Jed Dickson Dylan Hunter Ben Balcomb (w/k) Nick Foster Burt Cockley Daniel Morton Andrew Somerville

Coach: Shane Burley Co-Manager: Alan Nichols Co-Manager/Scorer: David Redden

GAME 1 v Central Northern, Varley Oval, November 3 2017

Skipper Mark Littlewood won the toss and batted. Littlewood and Nathan Price (87) put on 142 for the third wicket in a match-winning partnership. Littlewood finished with a super 116* as Newcastle finished their 50 overs at 8-274.

Central Northern put up a reasonable performance in reply, finishing their 50 0vers at 7-215, resulting in Newcastle securing a Bonus Point. Pat Darwen (2-39 off 10) led the bowling, with Nick Foster (1-26) and Burt Cockley (1-31) chipping in with a wicket each, with our lads also managing three excellent run-outs.

GAME 2 v North Coastal, Varley Oval, November 4 2017

Mark Littlewood again won the toss and again chose to bat. A more even batting effort saw Newcastle finish with 8-264 after our allotted 50 overs. Joe Price made 68, Nathan Price 44, Jeff Goninan 40, and Jed Dickson producing a rapid 28 off 24 balls batting at 7.

Newcastle also produced a better performance with the ball, dismissing North Coastal for 118, securing two Bonus Points. Four bowlers took two wickets each; Darwen, Cockley, Dan Morton and the reliable Foster. GAME 3 v Western, Varley Oval, November 5 2017

Game 3 was the clash everyone had been waiting for; the clash of the two dominant Zones of the decade; Western & Newcastle.

Mark Littlewood, for the third time in three days, won the toss and batted.

Newcastle were in huge trouble at 5-52, losing 5 wickets for 33 at one stage. A magnificent unbeaten century from Joseph Price (111*) steered Newcastle to 7-223 after 50 overs. Valuable late contributions from Dickson (36) and Dylan Hunter (21) made a big difference as Price set about restoring the Newcastle innings to a competitive target.

A polished and professional performance with the ball and in the field saw Newcastle dismiss Western for 160 and earn a spot in the State Final. Dylan Hunter’s 4-22 on a responsive, grassless deck led the way for Newcastle, aided and abetted by man of the match Price (2-28) and Foster again (2-22).

STATE FINAL v Central Coast, November 26 2017

Central Coast won the toss and batted on a flat deck at Bradman Oval. Joe Price’s leg injury opened up a place for Jonty Durrheim in the starting XIII. Hampered by a dislocated finger to skipper Littlewood (fielding at first slip), Newcastle were only modest in the field, and Central Coast finished off their innings well to finish at 8-234 off 50 overs. Durrheim’s 2-27 led the bowlers, supported by Cockley’s 2-49 off 10 on a day where spinners got absolutely nothing out of a batsman’s paradise.

In reply, Newcastle were in strife at 5-136 when Dickson was dismissed for 29. Littlewood’s 59 off 104 balls was made all the more impressive as he was basically batting with one hand. Enter Dylan Hunter at 7. Hunter’s match-winning 56 was made off just 44 balls, with four fours and three sixes. Jonty Durrheim finished the innings off with a six over long-on and Newcastle were champions of NSW again after a truly great game of Zone cricket.

Shane Burley only enhanced his reputation as one of the best coaches in Country NSW, again providing wise tutelage along with senior men Littlewood and Darwen.

Thanks also to Co-Manager Alan Nichols, who provided great support for the lads and drove the bus home on the very long trip from Inverell. Really appreciate your efforts Alan, and what a way to commence your tenure as both Manager and Zone Administrator.

JUNIORS

BRADMAN CUP

The 2018 Bradman Cup was held in glorious Bathurst this year and the competition was fierce. Along with the prestige of win the Bradman Cup, the prized spots in the State Challenge were up for grabs.

The draw saw 2 of the 3 favoured team in the same side of the draw. Western, the eventual winners were in one side and Local rivals Central Coast and Newcastle.

With expectations high Newcastle, found themselves playing the Coast in the very first game of the Tournament and both teams know that a loss would mean missing the final.

What was possibly the game of the Tournament, both teams had opportunities to take control but, in the end, when the moment arose Central Coast took it with both hands and won the game. It was a bitter pill for the Newcastle team who looked like they had victory in site more than once. Some inexperience coupled with so panic in the end stopped the Newcastle chase but I was proud of the boys and their fight on the day.

As expected the boys came out firing the next day and demolished Central North quickly and without any fuss. It showed the character of the team and the pride they have in the Newcastle shirt.

The equation was, for us to make the final we need to win Round 3 with a bonus point and Central Coast just needed to loss. We won the toss and we play accordingly finishing with our best total of 201. Our problems started when we found out that Central Coast were cruising to an easy win. It was an empty feeling that this team didn’t deserve, and we lost all momentum and, in the end, got beaten by North Coastal quite comfortably.

The final day of the Bradman Cup Carnival arrived, and the boys looked and in my opinion were shattered. Arriving at the ground we found a dry, dusty pitch that played the way it looked, dry and dusty. We play OK cricket on an OK wicket against an OK opposition. The game never hit any hits and for the record Riverina won but both teams look like they wanted to go home.

I was proud of the boys and the way they played and the team spirit they showed. Everyone in the team deserved to be there and with a little bit of luck we could have been playing for the Cup on the last day.

Thanks to Dave Sommerville and Dylan Hunter for running the team. On day one I was called back to work and Dave and Dylan did a fantastic job keeping the team focus and together. Big thanks to the parent group as well. They all brought into the carnival and it made for a wonderful experience for the boys.

Best batting – Lennox Cooper. 142 runs @47.3 H.S 73

Best Bowling – Angus McTaggart, Kain Anderson and Toby Gray all took 5 wickets each.

KOOKABURRA CUP

The u14s Kookaburra Cup was held in January in the picturesque town of Armidale. The side was led by Pat Holding and contained 3 under 13s players this year.

Our first game was against Illawarra at the lovely Armidale School (TAS). Illawarra won the toss and surprising sent us in. Ben Plowman and Tom Conaghan got the tournament off to a great start with an opening partnership of 63. Before Conaghan was dismissed for 36 off 41 (6x4s) and Plowman was dismissed for 23 off 50 (4x4s) shortly after. Finlay Thornton did a great job for us to top score with 50 off 58 with (6x4s & 1x6) before Cooper Southam timed his knock to perfection after allowing himself some time to get settled in and blasted 39 off 39 (4x4s & 2x6s) to see us finish 6/204 off our 40 overs. We had Illawarra 4-56 and 6-89 to always have them in trouble, eventually the batted the 40 overs out to finish 9/161 which got us a bonus point. Flynn Guest was the pick of the bowlers with 3-35 off 8 and Dan Williams and Pat Holding picked up 2 wickets each.

Game 2 saw us take on a young North Coastal team with a large number of u13s. Newcastle won the toss and batted first and were in early trouble at 3 for 8. 2 of our Under 13s Bayley Creer and Joey Gillard posted 25 each and Finlay Thornton returned after retiring hurt to top score again with 31. A disappointing overall batting display saw us bundled out for 117 in 37 overs with 4 run outs. We still knew with a good bowling display we would be in with a big chance if we could strike with the new ball. We did this having them 3-19 with two early wickets to Flynn Guest 2-23 off 8 and Dan Williams who finished with 2-16 off 7. Pat Holding did an excellent job as both skipper and with the ball to take 4-24 off his 8 and also take an excellent catch to wrap up the match with North Coast 9 runs short with 2 overs left.

Next day was a T20 double header and proved to be a big learning curve for us as we were beaten in both games. The first game vs Western and was our most disappointing display of the tournament as we were bundled out for only 43 and for the 2nd game in a row we had 4 runouts. Western passed the total easy with only 1 wicket down in 7 overs.

With a double header it was important we showed character and bounced back. In game 2 we won the toss and sent Riverina in who posted 3/118 of 20. Pat holding taking 2/29 off his 4 overs. An improved batting (and running between wickets) saw us post a solid reply of 8/89 off our 20 but unfortunately it was still a bit short.

The T20 games showed we need more exposure to this format especially with how to pace our innings when batting.

Day 4 saw us relocated to a synthetic wicket due to weather against a strong Central Northern team. Batting first after winning the toss on a very hot day we posted a very competitive 8 for 152 off our 40 overs after being 3 for 13 early. The highlight of this and the top score of the tournament for us was U13s age player Joey Gillard with 63 off 89 balls with (5x4s) .Handy contributions from Dan Williams and Wil Anson helped us to finish the innings with momentum. A powerful knock by Central Northern no3 Jack Hamilton of 85 off 82 ball was enough to get them home by 6 wicket with 5 overs to spare.

2 wins out of 5 was probably a fair reflection of where we were at with some solid performances and plenty to build on for the Kookaburra next year and the Bradman Cup going forward. Special thanks to Jed Dickson who was brilliant as Co Coach and was really good at engaging the lads. Also a huge thank you to the parents who supported the players and coaches including and for all the time they give up to support the players in their journey.

GIRLS

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – 2017/8 – Newcastle Zone.

The Newcastle Zone Girls combines with the Central Coast Zone Girls to create the NEW COASTER GIRLS TEAM.

The 2017 Country Champs were fantastic for the New Coaster teams, both 15’s and 18’s.

In the 15’s, we boasted many State Squad members and for the start we knew we had a fantastic chance to winning the Tournament. We won 3 from 3 in the rounds. We lost only 8 wickets in the 3 rounds scoring 253 runs. We then took 16 wickets for 224 runs which got us into the final.

In the final we batted first and posted 5 for 108 in the 20 overs. We bowled well and restricted Central North to 4 for 85 off their 20.

Coach Lyle McGuigan and Manager Jodie Shelley run the side and did a wonderful job. It was difficult getting all the girls in the games because we had such a formidable team, but I think we all had a wonderful time and most of all had great fun.

In the end we had 6 girls pick in the NSW Country/ACT State under15 squad which included Grace Dignam, Hannah Green, Maddi McGuigan, Clare Webber, Sophie Shelley and Jordy Anderson.

In the 18’s, the New Coaster team played some great cricket but lost one game in the rounds to the eventually winner North Coastal. We played some good cricket and all the girls enjoyed the challenge. In the play offs for 3rd and 4th we lost to Riverina mainly because of the disappointment of not making the final.

In the end we had 4 girls in the State squads. Jordy Johnson, Abbey Taylor, Ally McGrath and Alisha Bates were all selected.

All the coaches and staff were impressed with the girls and I thank them for their efforts and respect of the game and our zones.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

FIRST GRADE YEAR IN REVIEW

HOW THE WEST WAS WON

It had been quite a while between drinks for Wests, 52 years in fact, but the Rosellas made up for it in style during 2017-2018.

James King and all his men helped break one of the longest premiership droughts in Newcastle by defeating Merewether in a tightly-contested decider at No.1 Sportsground played over two March weekends.

Wests last won the minor-major double in 1965-1966 back when Harold Holt was Prime Minister of Australia, decimal currency was just introduced into the country and the St George Dragons claimed a record 11th straight rugby league crown.

And it followed the New Lambton club's maiden Tom Locker Cup success in November, again accounting for Merewether but this time in the one-day final of the newly adopted 40-over, pink-ball format.

Sometimes, as can be the way with cricket, you can find yourself on a bit of a run and the Rosellas also had a couple of individual stand outs throughout the summer.

Ken Clifford Medal winner King (165 not out) and Ben Chew (131 not out) not only rescued a possible collapse and first-innings loss at Wallsend, but produced the equal-second highest batting partnership in the district's 125-plus-year history after combining for an unbroken 304-run stand for the fifth wicket.

In the representative ranks and Wests' all-rounder Joseph Price made it a clean sweep at the Australian Country Championships in Geraldton in January - being named player of the tournament and receiving a coveted cap in the national merit XI after helping the Bush Blues clinch the title with a late surge on the last two days.

At the same event and one of Newcastle's finest products, Mark 'Prawns" Curry, said it was 'pretty special" to be part of the first three players inducted into the newly formed Australian Country Championship hall of fame.

Still on the representative scene and Belmont's Mark Littlewood had a fitting farewell after a decade as Newcastle captain, claiming the NSW Country Championships crown and again providing a quality account for the city at the widely-renowned NSW premier T20 tournament in Sydney. Wallsend's Nathan Price is expected to take the reins as skipper.

Newcastle also experienced success with the T20 Regional Bash, City's Dylan Hunter producing a man-of-the-match display for the Blasters in the top-two showdown under lights at the SCG in December. The emergence of Lake Mac Attack this coming summer will add another dimension to that NSW Country knockout competition.

T20 closer to home and the newly launched NCC Summer Bash, using club logos and backed by council, saw the Sea Dragons (University) reign supreme courtesy of marquee and key 2018-2019 signing Andrew "Buddy" Harriott.

Other points of note include the Charlestown combination of coach Michael Hill and captain Steve Mace in this year's first-grade semis some 33 seasons after first teaming up together, Cardiff-Boolaroo's farewell to their traditional home ground before beginning a new era at the fresh Cameron Park facility, former Toronto player Jonte Pattison making the Indigenous side for a 150-year anniversary tour of the UK and Hunter-bred Grant Stewart recently blasting his was to a century at No.10 and eight-wicket haul in the same game for Kent in the English County Championship.

And of course, the continued emergence of Newcastle's own Jason Sangha. Becoming the youngest since Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to score a first-class century against England, leading Australia out for the Under-19 World Cup final in New Zealand in February and more recently upgrading from a rookie contract with NSW on his way to a likely Sheffield Shield debut for the Blues in 2018-2019. He turns 19 in September.

A cracking season once again in Newcastle and already looking forward to the next one.

Yours in cricket,

Josh Callinan

Teams in the inaugural Royce McCormack Cup Final

Royce McCormack Cup SECOND GRADE

The 2018/19 was dominated by a strong Charlestown team in the regular season, going through the preliminary rounds undefeated finishing with a massive 95 competition points. Second place Toronto Workers and third place Merewether the major premiers were 31 and 33 were points behind Charlestown on the ladder respectively.

The 2nd grade competition featured its own one-day final following the one-day tournament at the beginning of the season, with Charlestown winning the inaugural ‘Royce McCormack Cup’ over rivals Merewether. In another low scoring affair, Charlestown chased down the modest target of 6/140 set by Merewether, claiming the victory with 6 wickets in hand and 10 overs to spare. It was a fitting result between two very competitive clubs in the name of a trophy which honours long standing Secretary and NDCUA life member, president and umpire Royce McCormack.

Merewether continued their dominance of second grade premierships by beating Charlestown in a rain affected, low scoring match at Kahibah Oval to claim another major premiership. Merewether finished 3rd on the competition ladder and definitely peaked at the right time of the season to dominate the finals scene. A strong victory in the semi-final against Toronto Workers, following a heavy defeat to the same team the week before in final round match.

Merewether were boosted by the return of Jono Dunn for the finals after he was dropped having played the entire season in 1st grade, he proved the difference with a damaging 70 to earn a spot in the grand final.

In the end the final again saw Merewether defending a modest total of 132 of their allotted overs, this time claiming the victory by 2 runs in a nail biter and a fitting finale. Although, a heartbreaking loss for Charlestown being their only loss of the season.

Congratulations to Charlestown on winning the club championship and the one-day final in 2nd grade, whilst Merewether will have their name on the premiership trophy for winning the big one at the end of the season. It’s no surprise both club finished top two on the club championship.

Personal results show that young gun Luke Hitchcock lead the run scoring with 470 runs @ 42.73 whilst the bowling spoils rested with University veteran James Wallace with 36 wickets @ 10.

MASTERS COMPETITION – GILMOUR CUP 2017/18

The 2nd season of our district Masters Competition was once again a fantastic success which allowed former & current players the opportunity to take the field on a Wednesday afternoons. This season we had 10 teams enter the competition due to addition of both Cardiff & Wests. The competition was played in tremendous spirits with all teams endeavouring to win but also enjoying the opportunity to catch up with old team mates and opposing players. Credit should also be given to curators and umpires for taking the time to prepare 1st grade standard wickets and adjudicating the games with a great attitude.

One of the many highlights throughout the season was watching former PGA Golfer Nathan Green and his brother Darren play for the Toronto Workers Kookaburras. Nathan scored a classy 41 in Round 3 whilst his brother took 2/13 of 3 overs in the same game.

Hamilton-Wickham, Charlestown, Waratah-Mayfield and Merewether qualified for the semi- finals with Charlestown defeating a strong Merewether outfit and Hamilton-Wickham proving slightly too good for a gritty Waratah-Mayfield. In the final, Charlestown won the toss and elected to bat in good conditions. Hamilton-Wickham bowled and fielded well to restrict Charlestown to only 109. This score was reached with 5 wickets down and only 7 balls remaining. Steve Mudford batted well throughout the competition and also top scored in the final with 41.

Basis of preparation

The Directors have prepared the financial statements on the basis that the Association is a non‑reporting entity because there are no users dependent on general purpose financial statements. These financial statements are therefore special purpose financial statements that have been prepared in order to meet the requirements of the organisation.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the significant policies disclosed below which the Directors have determined are appropriate to meet the needs of members. Such accounting policies are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis. The accounting policies have been adopted in the preparation of this report are as follows:

2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

(a) Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short‑term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less which are convertible to a known amount of cash and subject to an insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.

(b) Revenue and other income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any discounts and volume rebates allowed.

All items include the GST portion as the entity is not registered for GST concessions.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT NEWCASTLE DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION Report on the Audit of the Financial Report

Opinion

We have audited the financial report of Newcastle District Cricket Association (“NDCA”), which comprises the balance sheet as at 31 May 2018, the profit or loss statement for the year then ended, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the directors' declaration.

In our opinion, the financial report of Newcastle District Cricket Association Inc. provides a true and fair view of the Association’s financial position as at 31 May 2018 and of its performance for the year ended on that date.

Basis for Opinion

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Association in accordance with the auditor independence requirements of the ACNC Act 2012 and the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board's APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Responsibilities of Directors for the Financial Report

The directors of the Association are responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and for such internal control as the directors determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view and is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, the directors are responsible for assessing the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the directors either intend to liquidate the Association or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so.

Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of the financial report.
