The Arlington Young Democrats will be look- ing to our friends across the river to cross the bridge and help Virginia elect Jim Webb. In other news, AYD has found a perma- nent meeting spot. For the remainder of the year, they will be meeting at Rhodeside Grill on Wilson Boulevard at N. Rhodes Street. The first meeting in the new location was held in May. Congressman Jim Moran spoke to a crowd of about 50 about House Democrats’ plans to retake Congress. The new location was deemed a big hit by all in attendance. AYD invites everyone to all of its upcoming meetings which are held on the 4th Thursday of every month. ACDC News, July 2006, Page 4

The turnout was nothing to boast about—although the 8th district (Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and the eastern sec- tions of Fairfax County) had by far the larg- est turnout. Virginia’s 11 congressional dis- tricts are equal in population so the turnout statistics are meaningful. A total of 31,000 Democrats voted in the 8th District while sec- ond best was 21,000 voting in the 11th district just beyond the 8th. Third place was only 14,500—less than half the turnout in the 8th— in the 10th District, which includes Loudoun County. From there, turnout slid down to less than 9,000 in the 9th District, which is the far southwest corner of the state. The Webb-Miller contest was not the only primary June 6. The Republicans also had a primary to choose a candidate to face Rep. Jim Moran in the 8th District this No- vember. They chose Tom O’Donoghue, 41, who recently returned from two years with the Army in the Middle East. But if voter turnout is any indicator, it won’t be much of a race this fall. Where almost 12,000 Demo- crats came out to vote in Arlington, a mere 1,403 Republicans voted in the county. Of the 49 precincts in Arlington, the GOP couldn’t draw three digits in a single one. Their best was 74 voters in Madison precinct.
