Every day, an individual now spends more time engaging with mass media outlets through technology than sleeping. Ofcom (2014) reported that people in Britain spend an average of 8 hours and 40 minutes per day accessing media in comparison to only sleeping for an average of 8 hours and 20 minutes per day. With individuals relying heavily on media for information about social and political issues, pop culture, product information and general news, it is easy to see the power that these outlets have when it comes to presenting messages about sexual violence (Shaw et al., 2009). Even studies from the early eighties and nineties found that large proportions of children’s prime time television dramas contained sexual imagery, kissing, flirting and discussion of sex and intimacy (Cope-Farrar & Kunkel, 2011). -

Erotic Ambiguities : the Female Nude in Art / 30111 Helen Mcdonald
1111 2 3 4 5111 EROTIC AMBIGUITIES 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 3111 Art is always ambiguous. When it involves the female body it can also be erotic. 4 Erotic Ambiguities is a study of how contemporary women artists have recon- 5 ceptualised the figure of the female nude. Helen McDonald shows how, over 6 the past thirty years, artists have employed the idea of ambiguity to dismantle 7 the exclusive, classical ideal enshrined in the figure of the nude, and how they 8 have broadened the scope of the ideal to include differences of race, ethnicity, 9 sexuality and disability as well as gender. 20111 McDonald discusses the work of a wide range of women artists, including 1 Barbara Kruger, Judy Chicago, Mary Duffy, Zoe Leonard, Tracey Moffatt, Pat 2 Brassington and Sally Smart. She traces the shift in feminist art practices from 3 the early challenge to patriarchal representations of the female nude to contem- 4 porary, ‘postfeminist’ practices, influenced by theories of performativity, queer 5 theory and postcoloniality. McDonald argues that feminist efforts to develop 6 a more positive representation of the female body need to be reconsidered, 7 in the face of the resistant ambiguities and hybrid complexities of visual art in 8 the late 1990s. 9 30111 Helen McDonald is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Fine Arts, Classical 1 Studies and Archaeology at the University of Melbourne. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 40111 1 2 3 44111 i RUNNING HEAD 1111 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 20111 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 30111 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 40111 1 2 3 44111 ii RUNNING HEAD -

Abstract In order to describe pornography’s harms in the twenty-first century, an age of un- precedented access to Internet technology, some advocates—including activists, re- ligious leaders, politicians, and scientists—use a medical/scientific framework to claim that pornography is biologically addictive. This article examines public dis- course on “pornography addiction” to extend theories of sociology of science and sociology of sexualities about scientific knowledge and the biomedicalization of sex and sexuality. Using content analysis of over 600 documents, including scientific studies, newspaper articles, and state government resolutions, we show how ref- erences to pornography as addictive emerged in the twenty-first century and grew most substantially in the last decade. -

Migration, Gender, and Sexuality GEND 3005 (3 Credits / 45 Hours)
Migration, Gender, and Sexuality GEND 3005 (3 credits / 45 hours) SIT Study Abroad Program: The Netherlands: International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender PLEASE NOTE: This syllabus represents a recent semester. Because courses develop and change over time to take advantage of unique learning opportunities, actual course content varies from semester to semester. Please do not assume these are the exact lectures and readings for any subsequent semester. Course Description The course examines gender and sexuality in the context of post-colonial and post- migration subjectivities in the Netherlands. Through an integration of lectures, field visits to museums and grassroots organizations, and reflection sessions, the course explores how gender and sexuality impact the lives and experiences of post-colonial and post- migration individuals in the Netherlands. We will be focusing both on post-colonial migrants coming from the former Dutch colonies, such as the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Suriname, and the Dutch Antilles, and on the more recent Islamic immigrants from Morocco and Turkey to explore how gender and sexuality (and race and religion) are used in the processes of identity construction, integration, and exclusion. During a two-week excursion to Morocco, students study the interaction between Islam, gender relations, and sexuality within the context of the post-Arab Spring. The excursion will allow students to draw a comparative understanding of how conceptions of gender and sexuality are constructed across cultures and societies. -
John Boyle, Greg Curnoe and Joyce Wieland: Erotic Art and English Canadian Nationalism
John Boyle, Greg Curnoe and Joyce Wieland: Erotic Art and English Canadian Nationalism by Matthew Purvis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Matthew Purvis i Abstract This dissertation concerns the relation between eroticism and nationalism in the work of a set of English Canadian artists in the mid-1960s-70s, namely John Boyle, Greg Curnoe, and Joyce Wieland. It contends that within their bodies of work there are ways of imagining nationalism and eroticism that are often formally or conceptually interrelated, either by strategy or figuration, and at times indistinguishable. This was evident in the content of their work, in the models that they established for interpreting it and present in more and less overt forms in some of the ways of imagining an English Canadian nationalism that surrounded them. The dissertation contextualizes the three artists in the terms of erotic art prevalent in the twentieth century and makes a case for them as part of a uniquely Canadian mode of decadence. Constructing my case largely from the published and unpublished writing of the three subjects and how these played against their reception, I have attempted to elaborate their artistic models and processes, as well as their understandings of eroticism and nationalism, situating them within the discourses on English Canadian nationalism and its potentially morbid prospects. Rather than treating this as a primarily cultural or socio-political issue, it is treated as both an epistemic and formal one. -
