About the Brand 2016 marked the 120th anniversary of the Tootsie Roll. In 1896, Leo Hirschfield, an Austrian immigrant, cooked up the first batch of Tootsie Rolls on his stove in New York City. As the chocolaty concoction cooled, he and his daughter cut off pieces and rolled them by hand and wrapped the rolls in waxed paper, an uncommon practice at the time. What was the perfect name for his new creation? Why “Tootsie,” of course, the nickname he had affectionately given his daughter. His new chewy, chocolaty “Tootsie Rolls” caught on with the kids in his neighborhood and thus an American icon was born. From Leo’s kitchen to the state-of-the-art Tootsie Roll Industries Chicago headquarters, 64 million Tootsie Rolls are produced every day.
In 1931, the famous Tootsie Pop was born. Revolutionary for being the first soft centered lollipop, Tootsie Pop has become a part of American culture. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? Since Mr. Owl first dared to unravel one of the confectionary world’s most puzzling secrets in the classic 1970’s TV commercial, dedicated Tootsie Pop fans across the globe have tried to find the answer. But, over and over the temptation to bite to get to the chewy Tootsie Roll center has been too great, even for Mr. Owl. And, thus, “The world may never know…”
