Patrons will enjoy Renovated Arena By 2010 new chairback seating in the lower seating bowl of the arena. In addition, a new permanent upper bowl will also feature five rows of chairback seating. In total, the retrofitted arena will contain over 4,800 chairback seats, an increase of 1,200 Saluki Basketball chairback seats over its existing configuration. Fans will be greeted by a new entrance and lobby area, as well as a concourse encircling the outside of the arena featuring an athletic ticket office, Saluki Team LOCKER ROOM Store, expanded concessions and new restrooms. The upgraded SIU Arena will also feature a VIP Club Room and state-of-the-art scoreboard with individual statistics and replay capability to enhance the fan experience. The basketball team played its first game in the new complex on December 1, 1964. The Salukis beat Oklahoma State, 78-55, in the opener and posted a 14-1 home record. SIU Arena Advantage When you pack nearly 10,000 screaming fans into a classic, old facility, the decibel level can be overpowering. The Salukis are 100-12 at home since the start of the 2001-02 season, including 65-7 against Missouri Valley Conference foes. Saluki Basketball Enthusiastic fans and big crowds are a trademark of SIU Arena. Although its stated capacity is 9,407, the arena has packed in 12-standing room only crowds, including a record 10,300 overflow crowd to see Larry Bird and Indiana State in 1979.
