INTRODUCTION UC-Stallcup TEXT.indd 1 1/23/14 11:30 AM This contribution to the California Natural History Guide Series of the University of California Press follows a long tradi- tion of books that explain, explore, and celebrate the natural riches of California and beyond. Our intent is to tell beginning birders, or curious naturalists, the how, what, when, where, and why of birding. Because birds are so mobile, some individuals of most spe- cies can wander far from their natal homes and appear any- where. Here we have tried to include only those species most likely to be seen along the coast, from Big Sur to the Oregon border. This is not a field guide to bird identification, but a field guide to the birds themselves. Birding is a word that encompasses many concepts. For some, the activity of searching for and observing birds is a clear window into the natural world, an affirmation of its beauty and its peacefulness. To others, birding is a delightful diversion from the hectic or perhaps boring daily routine of the mod- ern world— providing calm amid the chaos. Birds are nature’s ambassadors, connecting us through their ancient lineage to evolution’s astonishing creativity and offering us some guid- ance, through our study of their habitat needs, in our steward- ship of the Earth. Some people have found the wonders of birds to be the perfect antidote to sadness or loneliness, or a path to comradeship with kindred spirits; others consider the complex- ities of identification or behavior an intellectual challenge. -

This chapter treats adult thrasher survival, longevity, short- and long-range natal dispersal of the young, including the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of natal dispersers, and a comparison of the field techniques used in monitoring the spatiotemporal aspects of dispersal, e.g., observations, biotelemetry, and banding. Rounding out the chapter are some of the inherent and ecological factors influencing immature thrashers’ survival and dispersal, e.g., preferred habitat, diet, season, ectoparasites, and the effects of two major hurricanes, which resulted in food shortages following both disturbances. Annual Survival Rates (Rain-Forest Population) In the early 1990s, the tenet that tropical birds survive much longer than their north temperate counterparts, many of which are migratory, came into question (Karr et al. 1990). Whether or not the dogma can survive, however, awaits further empirical evidence from additional studies. -

HEDLEY, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, 116 St. & 85 Ave., Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2R3, Canada ABSTRACT: We studied the song of the Lark Sparrow (Chondestes gramma- cus) in recordings of 15 individuals from a variety of locations in California. Lark Sparrow song is delivered as variable sequences structured in a hierarchy of four levels: elements, syllables, strophes, and themes. At the simplest level, elements can be distinguished by their appearance on a spectrogram. Birds vary the number of repetitions of each element to produce a syllable and string together several syllables to produce a strophe (mean 5.9 syllables per strophe). Strophes are delivered at an average rate of 5.4 per minute. Strophes can be further classified as belonging to one of a few themes in a male’s repertoire, where strophes in different themes are composed of almost entirely distinct elements and syllables. In <6% of strophes did we find elements from one theme mixed with elements from a different theme. Each individual sang one to three themes. The size of the repertoire of strophes is large but we could not quantify it because within a continuous bout of singing any particular sequence of syllables was repeated in only 5% of strophes. Each theme comprised roughly 20–40 distinct syllables. Thus an individual singing three themes could have a repertoire of 60–120 syllables. The number of unique elements per theme ranged from 11 in birds revealing just one theme up to 39 in birds revealing three themes, but longer recordings may have yielded more elements per bird. -

SoCal Biodiversity - Animals Arboreal Salamander Amphibian SoCal Biodiversity - Animals Arboreal Salamander Amphibian Arroyo Toad Arboreal Salamander Arboreal Salamander (Aneides lugubris) Management Status Heritage Status Rank: G5N5S4 Federal: None State: None Other: Species identified as a local viability concern (Stephenson and Calcarone 1999) General Distribution Arboreal salamander occurs in yellow pine and black oak forests in the Sierra Nevada, and in coastal live oak woodlands from northern California to Baja California. The species also occurs in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada from El Dorado County to Madera County and on South Farallon, Santa Catalina, Los Coronados, and Ano Nuevo islands off the coast of California (Petranka 1998, Stebbins 1951, Stebbins 1985). Arboreal salamander occurs from sea level to an elevation of about 5,000 feet (1,520 meters) (Stebbins 1985). Distribution in the Planning Area Arboreal salamander reportedly occurs in the foothills and lower elevations of every mountain range on National Forest System lands, although it is seldom seen (Stephenson and Calcarone 1999). There are records of occurrence for this species on the Los Padres National Forest near upper San Juan Creek and on the Cleveland National Forest near Soldier Creek (USDA Forest Service file information), San Gabriel foothills east to Day Canyon, and in the San Jacinto Mountains (Goodward pers. comm.). Systematics There are four species in the genus Aneides in the western United States, three of which occur in California (Stebbins 1985). Of these three, only arboreal salamander ranges into southern California. Most of the Aneides salamanders climb (Stebbins 1985). Arboreal salamander consists of two chromosomally differentiated groups that intergrade in south and east-central Mendocino County, about 56 miles (90 kilometers) north of the San Francisco Bay region (Sessions and Kezer 1987).
