2012 Annual Report

Now, more than ever. The Food Bank of Northern 2012 Annual Report

With pantry partners checking in with double- digit need growth, we worked hard to satisfy our commitment to no family going hungry in any of the six counties we serve.

Fortunately, we have each of you.

2012 Was an Exceptional Year for the Food Bank of Northern Indiana!

We fine-tuned our leadership staff, exceeded our fiscal goals, and bolstered our food distribution to its highest level since 1993. What a great year.

Unfortunately, we also experienced the effects of unprecedented need. With pantry partners checking in with double-digit need growth, we worked hard to satisfy our commitment to no family going hungry in any of the six counties we serve. Fortunately, we have each of you—our mission partners, donors, volunteers and selfless citizens who continue to be the lifeblood of our organization.

Without you, 250,000 less-fortunate families would add “food” to the list of many items occupying their daily struggles and preventing them from healthier lifestyles.

Without you, thousands of school kids would savor Friday’s lunch as the last meal of the weekend.

Without you, seniors would reluctantly spend a portion of their grocery finances for medicine, bus fare or utility bills.

What lies ahead? 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. And although there has been much progress in the fight against hunger, there is still much work to be done. The Food Bank is committed to becoming the leader in developing and implementing strategies to alleviate hunger and to ultimately affect the overall health in each community we serve. We will form real, working alliances with committed partners and show real progress in this lofty, shared mission. Among our goals for this year is to distribute an additional 1 million pounds of healthy food to those who need it most. It won’t be easy.

We still need you…now, more than ever.

Milt Lee Executive Director Now, more than ever. good stewards

Growth in Food Distribution Our mobile pantry visited dozens of first-time sites across multiple counties with funding from business partners and our generous public.

Dignified Experiences for Seniors Senior citizens no longer had to wait outside for a mobile pantry or farmers market because we delivered hundreds of nutritious grocery bags Mission: right to their doorsteps each month.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana works in partnership with the community to feed the hungry, increase awareness of the effects of hunger and lead programs designed to alleviate hunger. The Food Bank of Northern Indiana serves Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties, and is a member of Feeding America, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH), and United Way. Now, more than ever.

Mobile Food Pantry Program

Hitting the Road in an Effort to Bring Food Directly to Those in Need Recognizing that not all food-insecure households have access to food pantries in its six-county service area, the Food Bank initiated its Mobile Food Pantry Program in March, distributing nutritious food directly to clients, supplementing the work of its member agencies and meeting the growing demand.

A typical mobile pantry offers fresh perishable items, including produce, grains, dairy and proteins. Tables are set up at pre-scheduled locations where people can “shop” and select items that meet their individual needs.

Child Nutrition Programs Food 4 Kids: Discretely providing food to school-aged students to ensure they have something to eat on weekends and during holidays. Fun Packs Program: Many students in northern Indiana rely on school cafeterias for their most nutritious, or only, meal of the day. Since 2006, the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Program has been filling sacks of nutritious food that’s kid-friendly, shelf-stable and ready to eat with little or no cooking.

The program is free to eligible students and selected schools are identified as having a high rate of children eligible for free/reduced lunch programs. Food programs for children have shown to increase school attendance, decrease behavior problems, and improve the concentration abilities of students as well as academic achievement.

The Food Bank changed the name of its program from Backpack 4 Kids Program to Fun Packs during the launch of the 2012-2013 school year. The term Fun Packs prevents the community from assuming that the Food Bank is distributing backpacks with school supplies instead of providing a supplemental sack of food for the weekend. Using a non- descript sack helps shield students from any stigma that may be associated with being hungry or receiving food assistance.

During the 2012-2013 school year, Fun Packs were provided to 1,225 students in 17 schools in Elkhart, LaPorte, Starke and St. Joseph Counties.

Rise Up Academy, South Bend, High School Pantry: Newman’s Own nourishing children in our community Newman’s Own and Feeding America provided grant funding to open a school-based pantry in northern Indiana. One of 12 school pantries in 10 cities, Rise Up Academy’s Food Pantry opened in February 2011 and is the first school-based pantry in the Food Bank’s network of member agencies. This pantry is only open to students and their families. Students take an active ownership in the pantry by working each week. There are 65 students are served each week, receiving a total of nearly 29,000 pounds of nutritious meats, produce, breads, dairy products and canned goods. Did you know? 35,910 Food 4 Kids Fun Packs were distributed to hungry children in northern Indiana in 2012. Senior Bag Program

Providing supplemental food assistance so seniors don’t have to make tough choices. Every day, many seniors in our community make tough choices. Food or medication. Food or medical bills. Food or household expenses. Limited financial resources make it challenging to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

In February 2012, the Food Bank began its Senior Bag distribution program to the William C. Ellison Apartments and LaSalle Park Apartments, distributing 58 bags per month. Each bag may include shelf-stable items such as rice or dry beans, canned tuna or chicken, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, boxed potatoes, pastas and sauces, applesauce, cereal, crackers, soups, bread and one frozen meat. Fresh produce and personal care items are also included, based on availability.

In March 2012, the Food Bank was able to make a one-time delivery to senior communities in its six-county service area: 61 bags in Elkhart County, 154 bags in Kosciusko County, 193 bags in LaPorte County, 126 bags in Marshall County, and 75 bags in Starke County.
