st The 51 IEC Official Logo The Official Logo of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress The Sun symbolizes our hope of glory; it is a symbol of a new beginning. It also symbolizes the Philippines because the sun is the principal symbol in the Philippine flag. The seven rays of the sun symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The cup and bread call to mind the sacred species of the Holy Eucharist. The monogram “IHS” (Iesus Hominum Salvator) symbolizes the Holy Name of Jesus. This also symbolizes Cebu, since the former name of Cebu was Villa del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus. The boat, a common mode of transport in the Philippine Archipelago, is symbolic of the missionary nature of the Church. The people in the boat, each of a different color, symbolize the principles which have animated the faith of the Filipino people; green for hope, which blooms in adversity, blue, the color of faith which we cling to, and red, the color of charity, which urges us on. The aqua blue color of the boat is reminiscent of the Christian pilgrimage to Heaven. You are the mystery hidden from the ages and from generations past, now manifested to us. You abide in your Church and in the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist. As we celebrate the Holy Eucharist and receive your Body and Blood, grant us the awareness that your presence in us urges us to continue your saving mission in the world. Send us your Holy Spirit, that He may lead us to walk humbly with the poor and the marginalized, in the company of Mary, your most holy mother and ours. Amen. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 5 st The 51 IEC Symbol The IEC 2016 Symbol The Local Committee has chosen as symbol of the 51st IEC a replica of the shrine that houses the Cross of Magellan. It is chosen for the following reasons: 1. The Cross of Magellan is the symbol of the beginning of the Christianization of the Philippines. It was planted as a commemorative marker of the arrival of Magellan together with the first missionaries and the initial baptisms in the island of Cebu. 2. The Cross is the symbol of the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. 3. The Cross is the symbol of the faith that we embrace. This same faith allows us to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. 4. Although the Cross of Magellan may represent the imposition of the faith on the native Filipinos at the initial stage of evangelization, the cross itself becomes the symbol of the purification of our way of evangelization, so that it actually points to us the way to the New Evangelization, marked by the joy of the Gospel and the witness of our lives. The replica of the Shrine of the Cross of Magellan will contain a relic of the True Cross so that when people welcome it in their communities; they will be venerating the relic. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 6 st The 51 IEC Venues I. The Plenary Hall The biggest challenge for the Local Committee is the construction of the Plenary Hall. The City of Cebu does not have a covered place that can accommodate 15,000 persons. At the beginning it was proposed that a big private warehouse be converted into a convention hall, but the members of the Committee preferred that such a huge expense should leave something functional for the City and the Church. A private Company was found to finance the project and construct the Hall on the grounds of the Archdiocesan seminaries. An arrangement was made in such a way that neither the Archdiocese nor the IEC will have to spend anything on the project but that land owned by the Archdiocese will be leased later, after the Congress, for the Company to recover its investment. The cost of the Plenary Hall is estimated at P500 million pesos (about 9.5 million Euro). It will be financed entirely by the private Company. Funds raised for the IEC will not be used for the project, except for site development of the seminary premises. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 7 The Design Brief: The International Eucharistic Congress Pavilion has been designed, with all pragmatic and performative requirements in mind, to evoke a sense of importance, but at the same time belie any hint of caprice and grandeur. These seemingly contradicting characteristics have been thoroughly discussed, debated and synthesized so as to achieve a place worthy to be used for the congregation of the servants of Christ. While symbolisms and meanings were employed, these were executed in such a manner that they would become sublime integral elements of the structure. Thus allowing the observer to take time and effort to discern these meanings...much like what is required of us in our search for God. Proportions and Shape The overall shape of the building is much dictated by the form of the plan. The massive front wall is simply softened by vertical lines in the order of the Fibonacci series, a numerical equivalent of the Golden Proportion. The lines are then further diffused by horizontal lines in order to create a dynamic display of planar shapes. The wall is capped by a curved coping to sublimely mimic the roof of the kiosk of Magellan’s Cross. Said curved coping is repeated at the shorter wall on the building’s left side. Thus, completing a three-dimensional imagery of such an important icon of Cebu. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 8 IEC Mode Ground Floor 1 IEC Mode 2nd Floor 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 9 II. Cebu Doctors’ University This private University was chosen for the Symposium. It has a 1800-seat auditorium and eight more amphitheatre-style rooms capable of holding between 100 to 200 people. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 10 III. The Cebu Waterfront Hotel The Waterfront Hotel, a four-star hotel within a 20-minute walk to and from the Plenary Hall, will serve as the main hotel for the dignitaries of the Congress. Two of its main halls, capable of accommodating 2,000 to 3,000 thousand persons each, will serve as venues for the concurrent sessions. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 11 IV. Plaza Independencia The Opening Mass will be held in historic Plaza Independencia. It is in the heart of the City’s historic district. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 12 V. Cebu Provincial Capitol The Provincial Capitol will serve as backdrop of the Eucharistic Celebration just before the Eucharistic Procession, which will proceed through the city’s main thoroughfare, Osmena Boulevard. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 13 VI. Cebu City Sports Center The City Sports Center will be the venue for the Children’s Mass, where 5,000 children will receive their First Holy Communion. 51st International Eucharistic Congress | 14 VII. Hoops Dome Located about 30 kilometers from the City Center, it is a covered Sports Arena that will host the Youth Day of the Congress. Five thousand young people are expected to attend. VIII. South Road Properties South Road Properties or SRP is a reclaimed island off the coast of Cebu. Part of the 330 hectare island is a 20 hectare field where the National Thanksgiving Mass for the beatification of St. Pedro Calungsod was held in 2012. It was attended by 500,000 people. The Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission together with the Cebu City Museum are housed on the 2nd floor of the Rizal Memorial Library and Museum Building, a landmark itself being 61 years old. The building was built in 1936 through the efforts of Los Tocayos de Rizal. The Cebu City Public Library is housed on the ground floor. The Commission is composed of a Chairman, Vice- Chairman and 5 members who shall be appointed by the City Mayor. The Chairman shall be appointed from the among the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, their terms are coextensive with the tenure of the appointing power or unless sooner terminated at the pleasure of the appointing power. But the staffs of the Commission are permanent employees and are civil service eligible. VISION CHAC is a catalyst for Cebuano cultural heritage providing the best opportunity in art, culture and history within the community, instilling pride and sense of identity and unity among cebuanos as well as among the Filipinos. MISSION CHAC shall develop, implement and promote programs and projects that will inculcate the appreciation of cebuano heritage.
