2015-2016 100th Annual Report Vision. Leadership. Advocacy.

The mission of the Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce is to promote progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region. Chairman’s Message Staying Power. It has been my privilege to lead the Mason City Chamber of Commerce during its 100th Anniversary year. For an organization to continue to grow and maintain its relevancy for more than a century, requires incredible staying power. You might ask: “Why has the Chamber continued to prosper over the past 100 years when so much has changed in our local, national, and even global economies?” We’ve seen many changes, both good and bad, but we have endured. I believe our strength is in the support we receive from our members and our volunteers. In my time on the board, I have witnessed first-hand business people from all walks of life working together to make North Iowa a better place to live and do business. Steven M. Noto Stoney Creek Hospitality Corporation I’m especially proud of: Chairman of the Board 2015-16 • the advocacy we take part in to promote community and economic development • the opportunity to bring inspirational guest speakers and educational programming to our membership • our leadership programs for our youth and young professionals that not only prepare future leaders, but their class projects, such as Lullaby Lane and Clothe Our Community, make direct impacts in our community • our global travel opportunities which assist North Iowans in experiencing first-hand the people and cultures of important U.S. trading partners • the privilege of throwing North Iowa’s favorite party every year when Band Festival celebrates our rich musical heritage Most importantly, I’m proud to be affiliated with an organization that continues to adapt to the changing needs of its membership. That, folks, is the essence of staying power. As we press forward into the coming year, I’m confident David Bergan and the rest of the board will continue to focus on programs that benefit our members. I know one of those initiatives will be finding ways the Chamber can assist in attracting and retaining our workforce. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we offer our sincere thanks to all of our members. It is because of your support that we have been able to accomplish so much. And if you think the past 100 years has been impressive, wait until you see what’s in store for the next 100!

Looking Ahead... As we look forward to the Chamber’s second century, we’ll keep one important thing in mind: the goals of our founders. The ideals established 100 years ago for industrial, commercial, and civic advancement continue to guide and inspire our efforts today. Last month, community leaders heard from Sioux Falls Chamber President Evan Nolte. He shared successful strategies they have used to develop a comprehensive workforce attraction and retention plan over the past 30 years. Chamber leaders see this as a starting point for working with city officials and our economic development partners to implement a strategic workforce action agenda in North Iowa. David Bergan We’ll need all hands on deck to be successful, and I know we can count on each of you. Smithfield Chairman of the Board 2016-17 I’d like to thank you for your membership investment, and thank my board colleagues for their time and commitment to the Chamber. And finally, a special thank you to Steve Noto for his exceptional leadership

Celebrating 100 Years over this past year. It is an honor and a privilege to be your Board Chair and I look forward to serving in the year ahead.

In 1916, Mason City’s population stood at 17,712. The industrial revolution, a youthful population, a flood of immigrants, vast natural resources, and a strong spirit of entrepreneurism were propelling Iowa, and the rest of the nation, forward at a dizzying pace.

It was 1916 when business leaders in Mason City, with a passion for economic growth and prosperity, formed the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. Almost immediately, the Chamber began making an indelible mark in North Iowa:

• In 1920, the Chamber sponsored a 20-piece band of professional musicians that performed two concerts daily for ten weeks. The only “local” musician on the roster was Meredith Willson—playing the flute and piccolo. These performances led to the establishment of the Mason City Municipal Band. • The Chamber of Commerce Glee Club originated in 1922 under the direction of Harry Keeler. In 1952, this acapella group transitioned to the River City Barbershop Chorus. Today, more than 70 men of all ages participate in this program. • The Chamber established a “Community Chest” in 1923 to benefit the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, YMCA and YWCA. The Chamber continued to operate this organization until 1946 when it was launched as the United Fund, and later became today’s United Way. • In 1927, the Chamber’s Aviation Committee founded the Mason City Municipal Airport with assistance from the Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion. Charles Lindbergh attended the airport’s dedication ceremony shortly after completing his historic transatlantic flight. • In the dark days of the Great Depression, the Chamber organized a scrip program by issuing 10,000 one-dollar certificates. For each transaction with a Mason City merchant, a stamp was affixed to the certificate. When 52 stamps were collected, the certificate could be redeemed for 98 cents at the First National Bank. • The Chamber sponsored the very first North Iowa Band Festival in 1936, a tradition that continues today and serves at the official kick-off to the summer season. • In 1971, the Chamber began admitting women to its membership. It had operated as an all-male organization since 1916. • In the late 1990s, the Chamber spearheaded a program to install “WELCOME SIGNS” at the four major entrances to the Mason City community. The limestone masonry structures are a nod to Mason City’s heritage. • In 2002, the Chamber began leading annual trips to Washington DC to advocate for the business community and the North Iowa region. These efforts have resulted in improved relationships with federal officials and staff members as well as significant federal investment in the region. • The Chamber served as the applicant and lead organization for Mason City’s Vision Iowa project—which resulted in a $9.2 million renovation to the public library; the $20 million restoration of the Historic Park Inn; construction of the Architectural Interpretive Center; and the Federal Avenue streetscape improvements. • The Chamber offers Global Familiarization Travel opportunities as a means of helping North Iowans transition to the global economy. Destinations are important U.S. trading partners that our members may not feel comfortable traveling to on their own. Since 2011, Chamber travelers have visited China, India, Turkey, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, and Peru, to name a few. • In 2012, the North Iowa Regional Commerce Center opened in a formerly vacant downtown building. The renovation was made possible through previous Chamber fundraising efforts earmarked for a permanent location and an I-JOBS grant from the state. The Commerce Center serves as the business hub for North Iowa. • The Chamber served as a key partner in Mason City’s 2012 bid to be selected as a pilot Blue Zones Project® community. Today, Mason City is a certified Blue Zones community and the Chamber continues to partner as the lead for the Worksite Wellness component. • River City Sculptures on Parade has its home at the Chamber of Commerce. This sculpture walk takes participants on a 1.7 mile winding loop through the Cultural Crescent and back to the Downtown Core. Nearly 50 sculptures by artists from across North America are included in the exhibit.

Today, the Chamber of Commerce remains true to its mission of promoting progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region.

We remain an independent organization operated by a small group of paid staff and hundreds of volunteers. The Chamber is not supported by tax dollars and has no power to impose taxes or other measures that would directly increase the cost of living for the citizens of our community. The Chamber is simply a private business with a vested interest in activities to grow the local economy and improve the business climate.

As the Chamber enters its second century, it will continue to serve its members and the North Iowa region.

Phone 641.423.5724 www.masoncityia.com [email protected] Fax 641.423.5725 Small Business of the Year: Window World of Mason City Joel & Katy Showalter, Owners

Window World of Mason City is the recipient of the Chamber’s most prestigious award for 2016. As a result of the Showalters’ drive and determination, the company has experienced growth at a rate of 15- 17% per year in product volume since the Showalters purchased the business in 2011. In recent years, they have expanded their offerings to include entry doors and siding. This product diversification has had a tremendous impact on sales, which translates to a greater impact on the North Iowa economy.

When Joel started working at Window World in 2008, he was looking for a job in which he could better utilize his skills and talent. What started as simply a job, soon became a career, and ultimately, the opportunity to be a small business owner. Katy & Joel Showalter Window World of Mason City Business Philosophy: “Simply the Best for Less” defines Window World throughout the country. “Simply” means clear, low-pressure sales, itemized pricing, and no hidden charges. “Best” means superior products that are installed by true craftsmen. “For Less” means that Window World can sell quality products for less than their competition due to high volume.

Joel and his team understand the job they do for their customers today will lead to a job for their neighbors. They strive to do their absolute best on every project, every time. As a result of this philosophy, half of their business is the result of customer referral.

Beyond Business: As a salesman and business owner, Joel spends more time behind the wheel of his truck than behind a desk, but his commitment to helping others is evidenced in his daily life. This “road time” provides an opportunity for frequent random acts of kindness such as patronizing a neighborhood lemonade stand, assisting stranded motorists, or buying lunch for the person behind him at the drive-through lane.

In addition, Joel and his wife, Katy, donate time and financial support to local and national organizations. They sponsor local sports teams including the North Iowa Bucks and Park & Rec youth teams. They provide financial support to local causes such as Hayden’s Hope, Operation LZ, Sacred Heart Church, the Rockwell Fire Department, Crisis Intervention Services, and local Lions Clubs. The business passionately supports Window World Cares, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and Veterans Airlift Command.

The Chamber is proud to honor Window World of Mason City as its 2016 Small Business of the Year. Congratulations to Joel and Katy and the entire team.

The Small Business of the Year is selected annually from nominations submitted by Chamber members. The selection committee considers business philosophy, achievements, volunteer service, and overall impact on the community in making the award.

When Matt Chizek joined the credit union three years ago, one of his first items of business was to implement a name change. CENT Credit Union strives to emulate the Latin phrase found on a copper penny: “E Pluribus Unim” which translates “out of many, one.” Matt motivates his team to work together to serve their members.

One of Matt’s favorite quotes is from Steve Jobs: “Because the ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” According to his staff, Matt lives by these words and they see it shining through in his character. He inspires the staff to set high goals, to continue to develop professionally, and to volunteer in the community.

In addition to his concern for his employees, Matt has a servant heart. He participates in a leadership role on the Archdiocesan School Board, the Good Shepherd Board, and the North Iowa Credit Union Chapter. In addition, CENT Credit Union has begun holding special community events. Matthew Chizek CENT Credit Union Congratulations, Matt Chizek on your selection as the 2016 Boss of the Year.

Distinguished Citizen: Kim Pang When Kim Pang is involved, fun is sure to follow! This year’s Distinguished Citizen Award honors a man who was born in Malaysia, educated in the United Kingdom, has held management positions across the United States, but chose Mason City as his home.

As the General Manager of Diamond Jo Casino-Worth County, Kim is tasked with the responsibilities of operating a successful business. Although people in “high profile” jobs are often called upon to serve on community boards and committees, oftentimes these busy people serve in name only. Kim serves in the trenches, and he does so with gusto!

Currently, Kim is an active board member of River City Morning Kiwanis, NIACC Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa. He is a past board member of the United Way, Mason City Country Club, and the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. He is very active at Trinity Lutheran Church as well as several state and national boards representing the gaming industry. Kim Pang Kim approaches all of these tasks with a sense of service…and FUN, which is a contagious and effective means of getting things done. Our community has certainly benefited from his presence and participation.

However, Kim would say his favorite role is that of husband and father. Kim and his wife, Deborah, are the parents of two children—Blake and Samantha, who are students at Newman Catholic Schools.

The Chamber is honored to recognize Kim Pang as the 2016 Distinguished Citizen.

The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes a Mason City resident based upon leadership, membership and participation in community organizations, length of residence, and active service to the community.

In partnership with the Cerro Gordo Department of Public Health and the Blue Zones Project, the Chamber is pleased to recognize North Iowa Area Community College with the very first Workplace Wellness Award.

NIACC has had a worksite wellness program in place for more than ten years, and has established itself as a model for other local businesses. It was the first worksite to earn Blue Zones Project certification - a rigorous process that requires a holistic approach to employee well-being.

The NIACC Wellness Committee determines program goals and objectives; use of the wellness budget; recommends policy and environmental changes to improve health and safety; promotes wellness activities and events; and collects data and communicates results of wellness initiatives.

Clearly, NIACC has set a high bar for this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations to the entire NIACC team for going above and beyond to support employee well-being.

NORTH IOWA BAND FESTIVAL Amy Fleming, Chair It was an impressive year for the 78th Annual North Iowa Band Festival. The North Iowa Band Festival Committee worked hard to draw a big crowd downtown over the Memorial Day weekend. Despite a soggy Saturday morning, the parade and the Stu Nevermann Run were a great success! Thousands of families enjoyed a car show, carnival, marketplace, and live entertainment throughout the weekend. The committee is already hard at work planning the 79th annual event!
