Head porters are young women from Ghana’s rural northern region who work as human transporters in the various markets in urban areas throughout the country. Kayayei (female head porters) who work at these famed markets are the focus of this dissertation. The north of Ghana is the agricultural breadbasket of the country, with strong Islamic influences that thrive in dispersed, mostly rural ethnic enclaves. This contrasts sharply with the service manufacturing and trade economies that mark Christian influenced southern Ghana. As young women migrants arrive in Accra, this dissertation focuses on narratives of head porters as they confront the multi-ethnic, hierarchical social climates of the city, particularly Accra’s largest shopping venue, Makola Market. This dissertation uses theories in phenomenology, informed by feminist anthropology, to consider the political economy of Ghana in order to examine how head porter’s lives are grounded with the development history and the spread of capitalism in the nation-state. Throughout this dissertation, attention is given to the widespread informalization of the economy in the nation-state and the role of head porters in these processes. Using a methodology of collaborative photography with kayayei, this dissertation examines the politics of visibility and analyzes the kinds of skills these women develop in order to survive and negotiate the socio- economic hierarchies of urban space. By situating the theoretical and methodological concerns of this research within the social realities of rural-urban migrants, this dissertation explores migration as a sensibility that acts upon various social terrains at markets in Accra, Ghana. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All praises due to the Most High God. Photograph 6.13: Shoes for sale at Makola Market..................................................... 164 v CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: ARRIVAL/ A RIVAL Accra’s Makola Market can be a dangerous and alienating place, especially for a young woman who has just migrated to Ghana’s bustling capital city. In December 2007, twenty-year-old migrant Amina Abubakahr arrived at Accra’s boisterous Tema Station bus depot. The wondrous stories of successful market women she had heard convinced her to leave the country’s northern region and travel 800 kilometers to Makola market. The Northern Region is the largest of Ghana’s ten administrative areas but resources are scarce. Agricultural farming seasons dictate much of daily life and wage-earning jobs are few. Drought takes its toll on the land and large numbers of farmers rely on cash crops to earn income. She had few contacts in the city but Amina estimated she would earn about 500,000 cedis a day as a porter1. Porters are the women who transport goods through the narrow labyrinth of passageways at the vibrant market. Women like Amina, who migrate from rural northern regions of Ghana, enter Accra’s informal work sector as migrants who sell services known as kaya (Opare 2003). Kayayei transport customer’s market purchases in large pans on their heads for a fee. Kaya is a common word in West African languages such as Hausa, Songhay and Ga. This means “load, goods or luggage” and “to carry or transport” (Opare 2003). In Ga, Yoo means female. The terms kayayoo and kayayei mean female head porter(s) (Apt 1996, Opare 2003, CAS 1999, Payne 2004). This dissertation focuses on the experiences and narratives of kayayei at the urban market in Ghana. 1 In 2007, Ghana’s currency (cedi) was redenominated. In effect, four zeros were dropped from the larger bills. Even with the redenomination, most Ghanaians continue to describe monetary values in the old currency denominations. The 500,000 cedi mentioned is equivalent to 50 GHC ($51). In February 2007, the exchange rate was .97 US to one GHC. 1 Accra is a seductive place for young women who hope head porterage will bolster their obligatory financial support efforts to their parents as well as prepare for the families they have once they marry. Months earlier, Amina’s relative came to Accra to work as a kayayoo. She was Amina’s only contact when she arrived. The teem of market people deplete Amina’s efforts to find her cousin. Because women from the north cover their hair at Makola Market, Amina used these visual cues to begin conversations about where to

    THE TOMATO INDUSTRY IN GHANA TODAY: TRADERS’ PERSPECTIVE The Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transporters Association (GNTTTA) is a key informal economy player in Ghana. It is also a key player in regional integration because of its trade links with Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso, as well as the consequent massive flow of people and resources among players, partners and participating States, in line with ECOWAS protocols. The Association is predominantly female. Partnered by its transport wing, which is strategically located in Kumasi, buyers use the services of cargo truck drivers owned by Ghanaian transporters to buy from farm gates in Ghana during the rain-fed period from June 15 to December 15. From December 15 to May 30, the lean season/cross border trade takes place, with supplies coming from farm gates in Burkina Faso and the Upper East. The Upper East harvest periods run from December 15 to March 15, whilst production by Burkinabe producers run from the same period in December beyond May 15. In fact, this year, Burkina Faso stepped up production up to June 30. Regrettably, since 2006, supplies from the Upper East have been running low, until last year, when the Region failed to supply even a single crate to the GNTTTA market, owing to production and marketing challenges. This is in spite of a DFID UK intervention to step into SADA’s shoes and revamp production in SADA Zones nationwide and a media campaigns in that regard. Consequently, they have switched to soya, rice, maize etc. For the local trade, the GNTTTA collects its supplies for the various markets in Ghana from farm gates in Nsawam, Suhum and communities in the Fanteakwa District, also in the Eastern Region.

The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, and socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. The Kilimanjaro Programme of Action on Population adopted by African countries in 1984 stressed the need for population to be considered as a key factor in the formulation of development strategies and plans. A population census is the most important source of data on the population in a country. It provides information on the size, composition, growth and distribution of the population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of resources, government services and the allocation of government funds among various regions and districts for education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users with an analytical report on the 2010 PHC at the regional level to facilitate planning and decision-making. This follows the publication of the National Analytical Report in May, 2013 which contained information on the 2010 PHC at the national level with regional comparisons. Conclusions and recommendations from these reports are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence-based policy formulation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programs.

Indeed, in all maps of agricultural land use, most hyper-arid, arid, and semi-arid drylands are considered unproductive. Yet, modern societies in arid and semi-arid drylands still practice rainfed cultivation under regimes of much lower annual rainfall. This paper presents the results of ethnographic and cross-cultural investigations in the cultivation of Pearl millet, Finger millet and Sorghum, with a global perspective. We use published ethnographic material and novel data collected on the field to build and test models that display the interaction of ecological and geographic variables in explaining agricultural practices. The aim of this research is to show how rainfed agriculture is practised much more often, and in much more suitable areas, than normally reported. This holds the potential for the understanding of how these practices can play a pivotal role for long-term resilience and future sustainability of agricultural systems in drylands.

I laid emphasis on the myth of ɔhyeεni (ɔhene-king), a patriarchal figure who negotiates boundaries, Asante and Akan filial kinship narrative from Asante history.

While the literature is replete with studies on the migration of Kayayei to urban markets in the south, many of these studies are concerned with either sociological factors or economic ones or even health. Very little research has focused on the linguistic dimension of rural-urban migration in Ghana. Under the basic assumptions of Schumann’s Acculturation Model, a socio-psychological model of L2 learning, this paper employs mixed methods (structured interviews, participant observation) to investigate Akan as L2 acquisition among Kayayei in three highly multilingual urban markets in Ghana. The analysis of the data revealed that whereas social dominance patterns do not seem to aff ect acculturation among Kayayei in Akan acquisition and use in the selected urban markets, other social and psychological factors, e.g. size of immigrant group, residence, and length of period of stay/hope of return to home origin which tend to result in limited/full integration, do. The fi ndings of this paper resonate with Hammer’s (2017) fi nding about the relationship between sociocultural integration of migrants and the extent of their use of L2, i.e., that L2 learners with higher levels of acculturation tend to have higher levels of profi ciency in the L2.

It attempts to ascertain the English features of Ghanaian parliamentarians and whether the identified features can be described as Ghanaian English. The study was guided by the syntactic features given as typical of WAVE (Bokamba, 1991) and the grammatical description of African Englishes (Schmied, 1991) and a careful reading of the Hansard which is the daily official report of parliamentary proceeding. It is revealed that the English spoken by Ghanaian parliamentarians has identifiable Ghanaian features that can support the claim that their English is typically Ghanaian. It plays very useful roles in the lives of people and nations across the world. Studies have shown that English is the most commonly spoken and taught foreign language in the world today. In every country in the world recently, English is at least used by some people among the population for some purposes. It is interesting to note that English is a very important language in Francophone West Africa such as Togo (Awuku, 2015); it plays a major role in the Middle East such as Kuwait (Dashti, 2015); and some companies in Japan have adopted English as an in-house lingua franca (Inagawa, 2015).
