Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, Professors Pasi Sahlberg and Adrian Cassy Norris Piccoli (former NSW Minister of Education) and Dr Judy Willis, Principal Neuropsychologist. Minister Sara Mitchell indicated the state government would continue its commitment to needs based funding and reducing the administrative burden on schools. Priorities would include staffing provision in rural and remote schools and opportunities for Aboriginal students, enhancing transitions between stages 3-4 and 5-6, streamlining the curriculum, and enhancing the capacity of the curriculum for a changing world. We are likely to see more mentoring and rigour in vocational courses (VET) courses and clearer pathways post school especially in VET. Pasi Sahlberg and Adrian Piccoli discussed local issues John Alexander, MP for Bennelong Presenting Flags to RSC including high teacher burnout and sleep issues, challenging impacts of social media, and declining student well-being, which just happen to coincide with dramatically increased screen time. The future focus in education is likely to be on equity, student wellbeing and student voice. Dr Judy Willis discussed the power of video games, which succeed in getting strong “buy-in” to goals, promote challenge and prediction, incorporate lots of feedback without embarrassment, and enable young people to quickly move up to the next level. All of these features are “dopamine boosters”. There was extensive discussion of how to use this model in classroom activities to promote engagement, enhancing reading comprehension and learning.
