GS1-128 PALLET LABEL REQUIREMENTS 1 Introduction
CVS requires that each shipment in our distribution facilities be identified with a GS1-128 label (formerly UCC-128) for pallets. The label must follow the GS1 guidelines and CVS specific requirements. The label is used in conjunction with the EDI Advanced Shipment Notice (ASN) document.
GS1 Label Background
The GS1-128 label is a critical piece of the warehouse delivery process. The purpose of the GS1-128 label is to let your customer know what is being shipped on the pallet. When the receiving department scans the barcoded pallet label, it automatically refers back to the Advance Ship Notice they have already received, thus confirming the receipt of the pallet. The information on these pallet labels must match the data on the ASN. The package barcode (at the bottom of the label) must be a unique 20 digit number, and this number must appear on the ASN.
Benefits This technology allows the supply chain to run much more smoothly by automating the shipping piece of the process. It results in less paper, less human error and ultimately more profit for all parties involved.
The GS1-128 label along with the ASN deliver the relevant details of a shipment to the retailer. By providing pertinent information the warehouse receiver is able to quickly scan in the delivered merchandise, record the warehouse balance on hand and provide uniform information to the supplier.
How the EDI 856 ASNs and Barcode Labels Work Together 1. The barcode label is placed on each pallet shipped. 2. When the pallet arrives to its destination, the label is scanned by the DC personnel on the receiving dock. 3. The scanner enables the customer/retailer to quickly retrieve the ASN information to understand exactly what’s in the shipment without dismantling the pallet.
GS1-128 PALLET LABEL REQUIREMENTS 2 4. From there, the shipment can be routed efficiently and added to the customer’s inventory without having them manually key information in. 5. Each label has information about the origin, destination, and contents of the shipment. Additional information is also included.

Extension Digit
The Extension Digit has no defined logic and is used to increase the capacity of the Serial Reference
Company Prefix
Company Prefixes are 7-10 digits. Serial Reference Numbers are 6-9 digits.
Serial Reference
The Serial Reference number is assigned by the holder of the GS1 Company Prefix to uniquely identify a shipping container (logistic unit). A Serial Reference cannot be reused for a minimum of 12 months. The combined length of the GS1 Company Prefix and Serial Reference is always 16 digits.
Check Digit
Calculated using the Modulo 10 algorithm. Use a free Check Digit Calculator offered by Bar Code Graphics.
GS1-128 PALLET LABEL REQUIREMENTS 6 Label Placement Each logistic unit should at the minimum have one label. For pallets, it is recommended that two sides of the item are labelled with the exact same data, to ensure one label is always visible. On rolling logistic units a label on one side is usually sufficient. Note: There is no regulation that specifies where the labels should be placed – to the left, in the middle, or to the right on these sides – but as most forklift operators are right-handed, the most ergonomically correct scanning is done when the labels are placed to the right of each side.
