May 24th: Brockhampton (National Trust), Ledbury (for lunch) and Kempley where we will visit the Norman church of St Mary’s (English Heritage) and parish church of St Edward’s (arts and crafts)

Depart Abergavenny 09.15, Arrive Brockhampton about 10.45. Tea, coffee and loos available at gatehouse. Guided tours of the estate. Admission fee for non-members £7.50. Depart 1300. Ledbury: 13.15-14.45 Time to wander and have lunch at own expense. Kempley: St Mary’s and St Edward’s churches. Arrive Abergavenny approx 18.00 *Non-NT members to pay own admission. Price: £15

June 14: Margam Abbey and Aberdulais tin works and waterfall (NT)

Depart 9.15. Arrive Margam 10.40. Tea/coffee in Orangery while listening to Oliver Fairclough’s pre-tour talk. Oliver to guide tour of Margam. Buffet sandwich lunch 1300-1400 in Orangery. Depart Margam 1400. Arrive Aberdulais for guided tour 14.30 followed by tea/coffee and Welsh cakes. Depart Aberdulais 1600. Arrive Abergavenny 1700. Price including guided tours, food and drink: £24

Derbyshire long weekend, June 30 - July 3

June 30: Depart Abergavenny 09.30 for Lichfield. Arr 11.30. Lunch at own expense and time to stroll. Depart Lichfield 13.30. Arrive about 3pm. Check into Old Hall Hotel, reputed to be the oldest in England. Leisure time in Buxton. Dinner at 7pm.

July 1: Guided tour of . Lunch at own expense in restaurant 1300-1400. Drive to , the famous “Plague Village” where residents isolated themselves in 1665 to prevent the spread of the Plague. Time to visit the ancient parish church, Jacobean Eyam Hall (National Trust*) with restored gardens, craft centre, plague cottages and museum. Tea, if wanted, at own expense before returning to Buxton.

July 2: Drive to Castleton, home to the semi-precious stone Blue John. Guided tour of below the ruins of Norman-built . Drive to Cromford, a World Heritage Site in the Derwent Valley and site of Sir RIchard Arkwright’s cotton mills for lunch at own expense. Arrive at the wharf 13.45 for horse-drawn barge trip with commentary departing 1400 along the canal to Leawood. Visit the steam-driven Pumphouse. July 2 is one of the rare days when it will be in steam. Arrive Cromford 1600. Depart 16.15 for Buxton.

July 3: Check out of hotel. Depart 10.30 for return journey home via Droitwich for lunch. Plenty of pubs and cafes in town. Alternatively, Waitrose is opposite a park with benches. Arrive Abergavenny by 5pm.

September 5: Early industrial sites in rural Monmouthshire with Frank Olding

Depart Abergavenny 9.30. Visit Old Station in Tintern for tea/coffee/WC. Tour of Tintern’s historical industrial sites. Late lunch at the Bell Inn, Redbrook. Return to Abergavenny approx 4pm. Price per person includes tea/coffee & lunch. £15
