Dr. Paul Sebastian Director, Regional Cancer Centre Convener v Dr. Paul Sebastian Director vi The Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, (RCC) now DIRECTOR’S REVIEW in its 31st year of leadership towards becoming a global leader in cancer control, is an autonomous scientific institution sponsored jointly by the Government of Kerala and the Government of India receiving financial assistance from both. During this report period 1,78,523 patients including 14,282 new patients reported to the Centre for specialised cancer care. Towards our mission of providing highest quality cancer care, we strengthened the existing infrastructure by adding new equipment. To augment the facilities for comprehensive breast care, we acquired an advanced breast imaging and biopsy unit, which incorporates Full Field Digital Mammography, Prone Table Biopsy, and Sentinel Node Biopsy with ultrasonography. The system ensures minimum discomfort to patients for biopsy, high resolution images and speedy report generation. It was installed under a generous funding worth Rs. 2.5 crores provided by Government of Kerala. Similarly our divisions of Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Physics, Anaesthesiology, Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Transfusion Medicine and Cancer Research have added new facilities and started new services for the benefits of our patients. These included HDR brachytherapy unit Microselectron (digital model-18 channel) with Oncentra planning system, new generation LEICA microscope, Video hysteroscope, MRI compatible anaesthesia workstation and infusion pump, Beckman Coulter LH 780 fully automated 5-part haematology analyser, Automatic Component Extractor (T-ACE), Automated Haematology Analyser and Chemiluminescence-Fluorescence Imaging System. Newly started services include Rapid Arc, Respiratory Gating, Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT), Stereotactic Radio Surgery (SRS) and Image Guided Brachytherapy for cervix cancer, laser surgeries using advanced LUMINIS system for oral and laryngeal cancers, limb salvage surgeries for bone sarcomas and sentinel node biopsy for early breast cancers. Towards our mission of generating trained manpower for cancer control, we have been conducting various academic programmes. In addition to the ongoing DNB programmes, fellowship programmes, post-doctoral programmes, PhD programmes and other training programmes in various disciplines, we commenced super-speciality courses in oncology for the first time in Kerala. They include Medical Council of India approved MCh (Surgical Oncology) and DM (Medical Oncology) courses affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences. DM Programme in Paediatric Oncology, MD programmes in Radiotherapy and Radiodiagnosis are in the pipeline awaiting approval of Medical Council of India. One year Post-Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing under accreditation of Nursing Council of India was also started. Programmes in early cancer detection and treatment and awareness classes were conducted as usual and health care professionals in Kerala were the major beneficiaries. vii The efforts of our research resulted in 97 scientific papers, which included journal articles, chapters in books and conference papers. Out of the 41 journal articles, 34 were published in peer-reviewed indexed journals. An International Breast Cancer Conference was organised in collaboration with National Cancer Centre, Singapore to discuss novel developments in this field. ‘Excellence in cancer surgery through innovations’ was the theme of the two-day CME organised in association with Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO), which was attended by over 300 cancer surgeons across the country. To uphold role of carers in cancer management and to address psychosocial, financial and physical aspects of cancer treatment, we observed the World Cancer Day with the theme ‘Cancer patients and their family’. Interactive sessions with participation of patients, their care givers and experts, marked the event. World Palliative Care day was observed with education programmes for voluntary workers, sociologists and nurses. We took many initiatives and organised many programmes as part of our commitment towards creating cancer awareness among public, health professionals and in organising outreach programmes
