STRENGTH & CONDITIONING One of the most unique aspects of Maryland’s women’s gymnastics team is the nature of its strength and conditioning program “We have a vigorous weight program ” says head coach Bob Nelligan “We’re physically more tough and the support staff that’s allowing us to do this should be applauded” The team’s strength and conditioning coach Barry Kagan has been a part of Maryland’s strength and conditioning program since !!9 and has worked with the gymnasts for the last six years According to Kagan the gymnastics weight train% ing program is one that is constantly changing “It’s con% tinuously adapting depending on the individual needs of the current team ” said Kagan The primary goal of the team’s program is injury prevention Next the weight program strives to enhance Barry Kagan each gymnasts’ performance “Most gymnastics pro% grams take a fairly conservative approach doing mod% erate weight training ” said Kagan “We take a very balanced approach empha% sizing strength over muscular endurance as most of the other programs do” The team begins lifting in September upon returning to campus The first two weeks are comprised of a learning/reacquaintance phase “Most gymnasts don’t lift in the style that we do ” said Kagan “We want to make sure they are ready to take on the more complicated lifts” cent skylights and large windows overlooking the playing field at Byrd Stadium After the two%week introductory period the team progresses into a com% The Terps’ spacious weight room includes square feet of functional floor plex training program which involves several Olympic%style lifts The main lower space with two elevated offices that are easily accessible to the training floor body exercise is the squat exercise to enhance lower body stability For upper This season Maryland has begun to train in the spacious brand%new state% body training the women use dumbbells rather than bars to alleviate some of of%the%art weight room in Comcast Center the stress on the shoulders The athletes also train aerobically in September and Maryland gymnasts train with some of the best equipment available in% October to prepare for full routines cluding pounds of customized York free weights seven pieces of Keiser “In season our approach becomes more of a maintenance phase ” said Kagan progressive air resistance machines and a full line of Hammer strength equip% “We alternate the daily intensity of the lifts by organizing around the meet sched% ment The weight complex also features immense self%contained rack stations ule” The women lift as a team twice a week with occasional conditioning circuits Olympic lifting platforms with Eleiko bumper plates and upper body pressing in the gym stations As for strength%to%body weight ratio the gymnasts are the “strongest women in the department ” said Kagan The Terrapins are fortunate to train in two of the premier weight training Practice Makes Perfect at North Gym facilities in the country Conveniently located in the Gossett Football Team House at Byrd Stadium this facility has excellent aesthetic appeal with two magnifi% The Maryland gymnastics team practices in the North Gym located near the Cam% pus Recreation Center North Gym is a state of the art gymnastics facility that covers ? square feet There are two spring floor exercise mats which lie side% by%side with a travelling overhead spotting rig used for vaulting as well as floor exercise There are spotting belts that are placed above the uneven bars the single rail bar and the trampolines The single rail bar tumbling strip and vaulting area are all connected into or onto brand new fitted Tiffin resi pits Twenty centimeter mats surround AAI uneven bars and four new AAI Elite series balance beams One of the most attractive features of the practice facility is the lighting which is soft and leaves no shadows anywhere in the gym Finally there is a glassed%in tram% poline room with four%string bed Goliath tramps surrounded by spotting plat% forms and %inch landing mats 40 2004 Maryland Gymnastics Making Our Mark! • 2004 Maryland Gymnastics OPPONENT PROFILES Air Force Falcons Denver Pioneers George Washington Colonials Iowa Hawkeyes Location: USAFA Colo Location: Denver Colo Location: Washington DC Location: Iowa City Iowa Home Arena: Cadet Gymnasium West Gym Home Arena: Hamilton Gym/Magness Arena Home Arena: Charles E Smith Center Home Arena: Iowa Field House Conference: Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference: Independent Conference: Atlantic Conference: Big Ten Colors: Blue/Silver Colors: Crimson and Gold Colors: Buff & Blue Colors: Black and Old Gold Head Coach: Lisa Woody (Texas Woman’s ’!)     Chancellor Patrick Gallagher

    CHANCELLOR PATRICK GALLAGHER Patrick Gallagher has served as the University of Pittsburgh’s 18th chancellor since August 2014. In this position, he works to advance the University’s legacy of academic excellence, collaboration and research innovation. Prior to his installation at Pitt, Gallagher spent more than two decades in public service. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him to direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology. While in this role, Gallagher also acted as deputy secretary of commerce until leaving for Pitt in the summer of 2014. In addition to performing his duties as chancellor, Gallagher is one of 12 inaugural members appointed by the president to serve on the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. He also is active on a number of community boards, including the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Internet2 and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Gallagher holds a PhD in physics from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree in physics and philosophy from Benedictine College. He and his wife, Karen, are the proud parents of three sons. The University of Pittsburgh is a state-related university and a world leader in education, research and innovation. Pitt has an annual enrollment of nearly 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students as well as more than 300,000 alumni around the world. After the meeting minutes were unanimously approved, Lou announced that the rest of the meeting would be dedicated to a presentation by Athletic Director Steve Pederson. Lou then turned the meeting over to Steve. Athletic Department Review – Athletic Director Steve Pederson Steve began his presentation by noting that instead of the regular update on Fall sport seasons, he would instead present to the group an review of the past twelve years in University of Pittsburgh Panther athletics. Steve emphasized that the theme of the Athletic Department is “Only Big Dreams”, and noted the department’s mission to develop the best overall athletic program in the Big East Conference with an attitude that reflects the values of our University, the City of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Within the athletic department’s mission is a philosophy that while athletics is not the most important function on campus, it is important to the University’s mission, and therefore is an important part of the University community.

After several months of working remotely and following Pennsylvania’s stay at home orders, I am excited to announce that Athletics has been approved to reopen safely in a thoughtfully planned and phased approach. There will be new requirements and expectations in place when you come back to the workplace and please understand these requirements must be strictly adhered to. While the pandemic remains a challenge and we have a set of imperfect tools, we will do our best to manage our staff and facilities in the safest manner possible. Social distancing, wearing masks and an emphasis on disinfecting our own areas as well as being mindful of shared spaces will be among several changes in our environment. All the measures you are being asked to adhere to have been put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff, coaches and student-athletes, which is our top priority. Due to the mutable nature of this virus, information is provided daily and our response to any new campus expectations must be equally adaptable.

The “OC-Lot” across the street from the Fitzgerald Field House will be open for you to park, free of charge. DIRECTIONS TO: UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH- FITZGERALD FIELD HOUSE (Allequippa St, Pittsburgh, PA 15261) • Start out going NORTH on CLAIRTON BLVD / PA-51 toward BEALL DR. Continue to follow PA-51. 4.6 miles • Take the ramp toward I-579 / DOWNTOWN / SOUTH SIDE. • Turn RIGHT onto W LIBERTY AVE. • W LIBERTY AVE becomes LIBERTY TUNNELS. • LIBERTY TUNNELS becomes LIBERTY BRIDGE. • Take the BLVD OF THE ALLIES ramp toward I-376 E / OAKLAND / MONROEVILLE. • Turn RIGHT onto BOULEVARD OF THE ALLIES. • Take the FORBES AVE ramp. • Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto FORBES AVE. • Turn LEFT onto MCKEE PL. • Proceed straight through next two lights. • You are now on Darragh Street. Proceed up the hill to the stop light at Aliquippa Street.
