Reflection That You May Know Life! Rev. Donna M. L. Pritchard, preaching

Hymn Thine be the Glory UMH No. 308 1. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 2. Lo! Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness of triumph sing, for our Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting.

Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won.

3. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life! Life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife. Make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Refrain

Celebration of Holy Communion (Please use your own elements – bread or crackers of any kind, juice of any kind. Though we are physically separated from one another, we are still bound together as a community through our baptism. As members of the household of God, we now join virtually, still present to each other and to God. As we share in the Great Thanksgiving, you will repeat back the response we give each time we say “the community responds”.)

The presence and peace of God is with us. So we lift up our hearts. The community responds, “We lift up our hearts to God!” We lift up our hearts to God! Let us give thanks to God, because it is the right thing to do – not only now, but always – day after day after day. The community responds, “Day after day after day” Day after day after day. We thank you, creator God, that you made us in your image, and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, our love failing, and our bodies diseased, you reached out to us again and again, providing healing, wholeness, hope, and new life. When the flood came, you provided an ark. When the plagues came, you provided safety. When evening came, you provided a pillar of fire. When exile came, you provided a new song. Day after day, your love remained steadfast. The community responds, “Day after day after day” Day after day after day.

And so, with your people on earth, and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn. The community responds, “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might! Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might! Heaven and earth are full of your glory. The community responds, “Hosanna in the highest!” Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of our God. Blessed is Jesus Christ, who came to preach good news to the poor, release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. Blessed is Jesus, who healed the sick, freed the oppressed, and announced that the time had come when you would save your people. The community responds, “Jesus heals us, frees us, opens our eyes and our hearts.” Jesus heals us, frees us, opens our eyes and our hearts.

On the night he gave himself up for us, Jesus took bread, gave thanks to God, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to God, gave it to his disciples and said, “Drink from this, all of you: this is the cup of the new covenant, poured out for you and for all, for the forgiveness of sins and the wholeness of life. Do this, in remembrance of me.”

Let us be a community of healers and hope givers as together we proclaim the mystery of faith. The community responds, “Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again” Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered around this Sacrament, and on our gifts of bread and cup. Let them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, made whole by his witness, passion and life. Even as we are physically distant, remind us that you are never apart from us. The community responds, “We belong to your body. We are one in your love. We belong to your body We are one in your love.

The Breaking of the Bread This bread reminds us that any life, no matter how broken or sick or distorted it may become, can be made whole again in God’s love.

The Pouring of the Cup This cup reminds us that any life, no matter how empty or lonely or isolated it may become, can be filled again with God’s love. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. The community responds, “Thanks be to God!” Thanks be to God!

Prayer after Receiving Day after day after day you give yourself to us, in connection across the miles, in the prayers we offer and the Sacrament we share. May we who are fed by your love share that love with others, and may the peace of Christ and the resurrection life of Christ, be with us all. Amen.

Hymn Christ Has Risen TFWS No. 2115 1. Christ has risen while earth slumbers, Christ has risen where hope died, as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied. Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer, let the word confirm the rumor; Christ is risen, God is here!

2. Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save; Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grave. Christ has risen for disciples huddled in an upstairs room. He whose word inspired creation can't be silenced by the tomb.

3. Christ has risen to companion former friends who fear the night, sensing loss and limitation where their faith had once burned bright. They bemoan what is no longer, they expect no hopeful sign till Christ ends their their conversation, breaking bread and sharing wine.

4. Christ has risen and forever lives to chalenge and to change all whose lives are messed or mangled, all who find religion strange. Christ is risen, Christ is present making us what he has been evidence of transformation in which God is known and seen. Benediction Rev. Donna Pritchard Choral Response Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah G. F. Handel The Chancel Choir & Festival Brass Erick Lichte, conductor Archive recording from 2019 MUSIC NOTES

ATTITUDES FOR ALLIES DIGITAL CLASS | SUNDAYS BEGINNING APRIL 17 | 9:30AM We at First Church value social and planetary justice! But how can we best express those identities as a congregation and as individuals? How does our upbringing, our family of origin, our employment, our education, and much, much more impact how we work toward our goals of justice? This class will take a look at where we are in society and how we can use our own social location to bring Christ to the world around us. RSVP to our Ministry Intern, Jon Hughes at jhughes@ fumcpdx.org. There will be Zoom links for the class time and a Google Classroom set up to provide materials/readings/videos.
