...... ; .. "" ...... -.. . A company limited by guarantee and Registered in Registration No. 8m22 Registered Charity No. 254094 Registered Office: 2 Priory Road, , NG2 SHU Telephone: Nottingham 819622 (STD 0602) Twenty-SixthAnnual Report 1992-93 REPORTON THE YEAR'S ACTIVITIES OFFICERS The Trust continues to be affected by the recession generally and by the slump Chairman : Cllr. R.P. Gil ber t in the housing market in particular. The six almshouses at St. Leonard's Court Vice- Chairman : Cllr. M.E. Adl ington represent an excellent example of restoration in the heart of Newark and this Honorary Legal Advise r: Mr. C.P. McKay MA . was recognised by the award of a Commendation by the Civic Trust in their Award Honorary Secre ta ry: Mr. G. A. Tur ner RIBA Scheme for 1992. This was one of only two awards made in for ~IonoraryTr easu r er: Mr. J. Farr er I PFA IRRV the year and was presented to the Chairman at a ceremony held in the Library at Newark.

Of the six almshouses, three have been sold and three let on short leases. The MEMBERSOF THE COUNCI L OF MANAGEMENT Treasurer must be congratulated on making such financial arrangements in order to balance the books on the project . It means, however, that, although Cll r. S. Argyle (Nott ingham CLty Counci l ) providing low cost accommodation for local people, the capital of the Trust Mrs . C. Atkins (CPRE - Notti nghamshire Branch) remains tied up in the scheme. The Trust is also grateful to the Architectural Mrs . J . Bennet t Heritage Fund for extending the period of their low interest loan to meet the Cllr . K. Bul l1 vant (Nott i nghamshire Count y Council ) situation. Mr . D.C. Ca t chpole Mr. R. Culle n (Civic Society) The Revolving Fund Committee/Technical Panel has been very concerned at the Mr s . K. Cutts condition of a number of listed buildings throughout the county and has assisted Mr. D. N. Durant (Nottin ghamshi re Local Histor y Council) the County Council in producing their Buildings at Risk Register which is now on Cl lr . P.W. Evans (Rushcli f f e Borough Counci l ) computer and nationally indexed. Mr. P. Grover (Newark & Sherwood Distr ic t Council ) Cllr . Mrs . M. Hall (Basse tla w Distr~ctCou nci l) One of the buildings at risk is Holm Garth House, Blyth. This is a timber framed Cll r . R.M. Har dy (Gedling Bor ough Council) building of original 17th century date, although its importance was not realised Mr. F.N. Hoskins until some demolition of the rear wing revealed the true extent of the timber Cllr . Mrs . C.E.M. Je f frey s (Nottin ghamshLre County CouncLl ) framing. The owner had removed the timber framing for expert restoration, Cllr . D.J. Kirkbam (Notti nghamshi r e Coun t y Council ) following professional advice but had then run into financial difficulties and Cll r . T.A. J . Petten gell (Broxtowe Bor ough Council) the site is now for sale. The Trust is anxious that the building should be Cllr . P. Prebbl e (Newark & Sherwood Dis tr ict Counci l) restored and is also concerned that the ·site and the immediate surroundings to Mrs . J . Punt ' the building should be properly developed and landscaped. This site is likely to Cllr . M. Riasat (Notting hamshire County Council) appear again in future Trust reports and activity. Mrs . H. Silvester B.G Co Cll r . . Smi t h (Nott i nghamshir e unty Council) An important aspect of the work was making observations on planning applications Cll r. G. Wa t son (Ashf ield Dist r ic t Counci l) which affect listed buildings or sites within Conservation Areas. The Trust is consulted by a number of District Councils in this respect and the total number of responses over the year was two hundred and ninety. It is felt that, in this way, the Trust can make a positive contribution to the preservation and CO- OPTED MEMBERS enhancement of the local environment. . Mr . B.M. Allebo n The Annual Dinner was held at The Red House, Kelham and was attended by fifty Mr . G. Beaumont members and guests. This event gives members a chance to meet socially and enjoy Mr. J. Farrer a meal together in pleasant surroundings. It is hoped that this can become a Mr. C. Olenn regular event in the Trust's year. Mr. G.A. Tur ner Mr . A. Wahle r s The year 1992 was particularly significant in that it was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Trust. This was recognised by a reception at County Hall held by the Chairman of the County Council. The Trust was very grateful for this recognition by the County Council who, in fact, were the original MEMBERSOF THE TECHNICAL PANEL sponsors of the Notts Building Preservation Trust in 1967. Mr . B.M. Allebon Mr . L. Godl ewski The Harry Johnson Award is given annually to the best design of a new building, or Ms. N. Ashurs t Mr. F. N. REPORT OF THE AUDITORTO THE MEMBERS

I have audited the Financial Statements for the year ended 31st March 1993 in accordance with auditing standards, having regard to the following matters:

The Trust, in common with many Charities, derives a substantial proportion of its income from legacies and other voluntary donations. These cannot be fully controlled until they are entered in the accounting records and are not therefore capable of independent auditing verification.

Subject to the foregOing, in my oplnlon the Financial Statements, which have been prepared under the historical cost convention~give a true and fair view of the state of the Trust's affairs at 31st March 1993 and of the re s ults shown on the Income and Expenditure Account for the year then ended and comply with the Companies Act 1985.
