Abject Cruelty of the Live Export Trade
Every year millions of Australian animals are exported live for slaughter. Those who survive the journey often endue brutal treatment & conscious slaughter. Barbaric, sickening, frightening, & disturbing televised death of 2000 sheep on transport ship 8 th April 2018 Horrendous cruelty on mass scale of absolute callousness but unconscionable interests try to defend the inhumanity. Animals Australia have done extensive investigations into the live export trade uncovering some of the worst animal cruelty perpetrated resulting in prosecutions & at one stage a temporary ban being imposed on the sickening trade. Cattle, sheep & goats are sent throughout the Middle East & South East Asia. To countries with no laws to protect them from cruelty. Tens of thousands of animals don’t survive the sea journey & those that do disembark into countries where they are transported, handled & then slaughtered in appalling ways. Most animals slaughtered overseas have their throats cut while they are fully conscious, leading to an incredibly painful & prolonged death. Despite the fact that governments new regulations have now been implemented in every export market (except Egypt), shocking cruelty continues to be exposed, including in Turkey, Indonesia, Kuwait, Qatar, Pakistan, Israel, Mauritius, & Egypt, in every export market that Animals Australia has investigated, they have uncovered cruelty. The journey over the past 30 years of Australia’s live export industry has exported over 200 million animals to the Middle East during that time over 2.5 million animals have died en rroute & many more have suffered injury, illness, & distress directly caused by transportation by sea. The major cause of death on ships for sheep is ‘inanition’ failing to eat, caused by the stresses of transportation & the unfamiliar pellet food provided. The history of the live export trade is littered with disasters caused by storms, heat episodes, mechanical failures, fires on board, & trade disputes. In 2009, 32,117 sheep died en-route & in the Middle East Animals Australia has conducted seven investigations since 2003 which have revealed appalling cruelty to Australian & other animals in the region. There are no laws to protect animals from acts of cruelty in the Middle East. Animals have their throats cut whilst fully conscious, a barbaric & cruel method of slaughter which is illegal & unacceptable in Australia. Australian sheep are routinely purchased by individual buyers & merchants, tied up with rope & shoved into car boots in a region where temperatures regularly hover near 50 degrees C in summer. Local people throughout the Middle East believe Australians approve of their treatment of animals. They have reached this logical conclusion based on our willingness to provide them with animals for slaughter for over 30 years. Rather than inspiring desperately needed change in attitudes & treatment- the continued supply of Australian animals is reinforcing long held beliefs that their treatment of animals is acceptable. The operation of Australia’s live export industry, & the tens of thousands of animals that die en route to the Middle East each year sets an example that profit is more important than animal welfare & that animals are simply chattels to be traded & slaughtered. Despite Australia’s live export industry having representatives in the region for two decades, cruel & brutal treatment of animals remains routine & widespread throughout the region. The alternative is to ban live export & set an example & precedent that will inspire change. Such a decision by the Australian government would protect millions of Australian animals from cruel treatment, & ensure that animal welfare was brought to political & public prominence in the Middle East. In my opinion there exists a conspiracy of the medical-pharmaceutical interests on an international basis to eradicate alternative health (not disease) care from the people of the world with a total disregard for the health & life of the people. I feel that the major motivation of this potentially destructive scheme is the desire to make money & I call the condition of this utter sickness of man – ‘The Greed Disease’ I observe the conspiracy is interwoven with the American Medical Association, the Federal Government, especially the Federal Drug Administration, the Federal Trade Commission, the Pharmaceutical Advertising Council, & the entire media including television networks, radio networks, newspapers, magazines, & book publishers. However the Office of Technological Assessment reported to the Congress in the late 1970’s that only 10% of the methods utilized in allopathic (official, orthodox) medicine are proven safe & efficacious. Drug companies can easily arrange appropriate clinical trials by paying a researcher to produce the desired results that will assist the intended application of the drug. The incentive for researchers to fabricate data is enormous. As much as $1000 per subject is paid by American companies which enables some researchers to earn up to $1 million a year from drug research. And they know all too well that if they don't produce the desired data, the loss of future work is inevitable. Unfortunately, because of secrecy, most fraud in clinical drug trials is unlikely to be detected. However, cases of data-fabrication in clinical drug trials have been uncovered where, for example, "patients who died while on the trial were not reported to the sponsor....Dead people were listed as subjects of testing... People reported as subjects of testing were not in the hospital at the time of tests..." and where “Patient consent forms bore dates indicating they were signed by the subjects after the subjects had died” Even if data from clinical trials is not falsified, it is often of little worth, because they are not performed appropriately. Trials involve relatively small numbers of people and the subjects taking part usually do not represent those who will use the drug after its approval; so many harmful effects of a new drug appear only when it has been marketed. Fraud in Vivisection - Animal Tests. In 2004, the British Medical Journal published an article titled "Where is the evidence that animal research benefits humans?" It states: "the public often consider it axiomatic that animal research has contributed to the treatment of human disease, yet little evidence is available to support this view ." After 150 years of animal research, literally billions of animals used, billions of taxpayer dollars spent, and regular articles in the commercial media that claim animal research benefits humans, this revelation might shock you. Let's look at why one of the worlds's leading medical journal states, "yet little evidence is available to support this view"; the view that animal research has contributed to the treatment of human disease. The problem of inappropriate and flexible testing of drugs and chemicals, that we saw above regards clinical trials, is even more pronounced with the use of so-called animal 'models'; a practice termed vivisection. For instance, the fact that the animal is relatively healthy before the experiment means that disease and or trauma has to be induced by violent and artificial means. This bears no relation to the spontaneous ways in which Humans develop illness, often through a faulty lifestyle & diet. For example, consider the case of osteoarthritis, a human degenerative disease resulting in grotesque and painful deformities of the joints . How do researchers attempt to mimic human lameness ? In dogs, cats, sheep and pigs? The animal’s joints are beaten with hammer blows, injected with irritating liquids, subjected to ionising radiation and/or dislocated. It is obvious that the resulting fractures, haemorrhages, thromboses, contusions and inflammation bear no relation to human osteoarthritis, "which is a local manifestation of a generalised illness of the collagen” The fact is, if you had a new possible treatment for humans with cancer would it make sense to test it on humans who do not have cancer? No, because there are tremendous differences in metabolism which would produce very different results. The people without cancer will react very differently to the treatment than the people with cancer. It is even more absurd to think that test results from healthy members of one species, or from those with artificially induced symptoms, can be applied to another species. Drugs tested on such artificially diseased non-human animals cannot possibly yield results relevant to a spontaneous, naturally occurring human disease. Moreover, there is no true correlation between different species. Drug Companies Make These Admissions Because they had performed the required animal safety-tests, and because these did not show evidence of any danger, the manufacturers of Thalidomide were found not guilty by the court of consciously marketing a harmful drug. In August 2015, Niall Blair MP and Federal Agriculture Minister, Senator Barnaby Joyce announced that they too planned to use the NSW Biosecurity Bill 2015 to target animal rights activists who record operations of intensive farming facilities and disperse the information to the public. The Australian Parliaments seem bereft of moral fibre. The statements made reveal that the proposed Bill has the potential to be used as US-style ‘ag-gag legislation’ – laws that seek to gag animal activists, employees, whistle-blowers and the media from making public evidence of animal cruelty. These laws stifle transparency. There is already legislation that covers matters of trespass and recording of information, and as such the 2015 Biosecurity Bill is effectively a provision expressly aimed at silencing animal rights advocates and activists. Liberal Senator Chris Back has tabled a Bill attempting to pass federal ag-gag legislation. The oddly named Criminal Code Amendment (Animal Protection) Bill 2015 (Bill) has nothing to do with animal protection - instead, it protects those involved in animal abuse by ensuring evidence of systemic cruelty do not reach the public. This dangerous new Bill punishes activists and whistle-blowers, rather than increasing punishments to those that abuse animals. The Bill requires activists to hand over footage within 1 working day, essentially halting the ability to obtain evidence that will expose systemic abuse in the industry and will allow the industries to use the same old excuse of “rogue operator”. It incorporates an emphasis on quick reporting of any documentation or footage obtained from factory farms - one of the hallmarks of US-style ag-gag legislation. Where is the Outrage, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals & Condemnation Against the Unnecessary Invalid Vivisection Torture of Laboratory Animals? Bindy was stolen & months later went to a city pound & from there to a cancer research facility. From a safe loving home to cages, trauma, inhumane treatment & finally cruelly experimented on. When Mary died she bequeathed 50% of her home & all she had to a society, which claims to help stop cruelty to animals, & 50% to a major cancer fund believing she was doing the right thing. The irony is that one of the beneficiaries does not help little dogs like hers because it was then a laboratory dog, & the other beneficiary funds grants to university & vivisection facilities who tortured her loving dog to death. Mary like the general public had no knowledge of this. It’s a big dark secret. This is a true story not a scenario. Can any one explain the ethical, moral, or physical difference between a domestic & a laboratory dog? Why Vivisection Persists If animal experimentation is so flawed, why does it persist ? There are several likely explanations. Vivisection is easily published. In the “publish or perish” world of academic science, it requires little originality or insight to take an already well defined animal model, change a variable or species being used, & obtain “new” & “interesting” findings within a short period of time. In contrast, clinical research, while directly applicable to humans, is often more difficult & time consuming. Also the many species available & the nearly infinite possible manipulations offers researchers the opportunity to “prove” almost any theory that serves their economic, professional, or political needs. For example researchers have “proven” in animals that cigarettes both do & do not cause cancer- - depending on the funding source. Vivisection is self-perpetuating. Scientist’s salaries & professional status are often tied to grants, & a critical element of success in grant applications is proof of prior experience & expertise. Researchers trained in animal research techniques find it difficult or inconvenient to adopt new methods, such as tissue cultures. Vivisection appears easier than clinical research. Researchers often assert that laboratory experiments are “controlled”, because they can change one variable at a time. The control however, is illusory - -& undermine extrapolation of findings to humans. Vivisection is lucrative. Its traditionally respected place in modern medicine results in secure financial support, which is often an integral component of a universities budget. Many medical centres receive tens of millions of dollars annually in direct grants for animal research, & tens of millions more for overhead costs that are supposedly related to that research. Since these medical centres depend on this overhead for much of their administrative costs, construction, building, & maintenance, they perpetuate vivisection by praising it in the media & to legislators. Vivisection’s morality is rarely questioned by researchers, who generally choose to dogmatically defend the practice rather than confront the obvious moral issues it raises. Animal researchers language betrays their efforts to avoid morality. For example, they “sacrifice” animals rather than kill them, & they may note animal “distress” but never acknowledge pain or other suffering. Young scientists quickly learn to adopt such a mindset from their superiors, as sociologist Arnold Arluke explains: “One message - - almost a warning - - that newcomers got was that it was controversial or risky to admit to having ethical concerns, because to do so was tantamount to admitting that there was some thing morally wrong with animal experimentation, thereby giving ‘ammunition to the enemy’. Conclusion, The value of animal experimentation has been grossly exaggerated by those with vested economic interests in its preservation. Because animal experimentation focuses on artificially created pathology, involves confounding variables, & is undermined by differences in human & nonhuman anatomy, physiology, & pathology, it is an inherently unsound method to investigate human disease processes, The billions of dollars invested annually in animal research would be put to much more efficient, effective, & humane use if redirected to clinical & epidemiological research & public health programs. Our eyes met briefly before a club came down on her head. Her throat was cut, & she was tossed onto a pile next to a dog who still appeared to be alive. Soon her skin was headed out the door to be sold” That’s how a P eTA Asia investigator described the horrors at an abattoir in China where terrified dogs- some likely stolen from loving homes or snatched off streets- are beaten & killed before their skin is turned into gloves & other products & sold to unsuspecting consumers around the world. The skins of these abused animals are sold for an average of 15 yuan each or roughly $3.00 – but clearly no price can be placed on the immense suffering these gentle animals endue before they’re killed. The dog skins are made into women’s dress gloves, men’s work gloves & other wearing apparel & exported by China & sold around the world.
