Primates In Our Midst May Term 2018: London, Gibraltar and Louisville Illinois Wesleyan University May 8 – 25, 2018 Program Direction and Academic Content by Dr. Ellen Furlong and Jill Katka, Assistant Curator for the Louisville Zoo’s Commissary and Gorilla Forest. Course: Psych 369: Primates in our Midst: How Monkeys Solve the Human Problem Nonhuman primate minds are shaped for problems they encounter in the wild foraging social relationships, navigating space, etc. However, many face new cognitive challenges imposed by living with or around humans, either in captivity (i.e., in zoos or sanctuaries) or the wild (when humans co-occupy their habitats through urban sprawl, deforestation, ecotourism, etc.) Primates have succeeded to the extent they have thanks to a hallmark of their primate minds: the ability to change their behavior intelligently in reaction to new situations. We will examine how primates flexibility adapt to humans both in captivity (the London Zoo, Howlett’s Animal Park) and the “wild” (Gibraltar Nature Reserve). We will then apply what we have learned to construct enrichment items for primates at the Louisville Zoo. Itinerary Tuesday May 8 CHICAGO Departure. English Book Owners in the Seventeenth Century: A Work in Progress Listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate.

The Evolution of Bowood House and Estate Since 1945 Illustrated talk by the Most Hon. the Marquess of Lansdowne By Dr Robert Blackburn The 14th Joint Annual Civic Society lecture (in conjunction with the Friends of St Andrew’s) was held in St Andrew’s Church, Chippenham, 21 June 2016 by kind permission of the Vicar, the Rev. Rod Key, and in the presence of the Mayor of Chippenham , Cllr Terry Gibson , and Mrs Gibson. Lord Lansdowne was introduced by Mike Stone, Chair of the Civic Society. Bowood Park was once part of the Royal Forest of Chippenham. Today, it is part of the Historic Houses Association (the HHA), which markets itself separately, outside the National Trust and English Heritage. Lord Lansdowne said that he regarded himself as the custodian of Bowood, not just the owner. He had been in this role since 1972, when his father, the 8th Marquess, born in 1912, retired to Perthshire when he turned 60. During the 44 years since, there have been many challenges and anxieties, as well as pleasures, and the purpose of this talk was to outline some of these, offering a picture of the development of the Lord Lansdowne giving his talk at the Joint Annual Civic Bowood Estate over the decades Society Lecture. since the Second World War. Lord Lansdowne showed a map of the Bowood Estate as it was in 1900. At that time, it consisted of 12,000 acres, including most of the town of Calne. Today, in 2016, the estate’s acreage has fallen to 4,000, mostly agriculture, let for farming.
