  • Christmas Letter 2003
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2003-2004 Dear Friends and Family: Another year of wonderful experiences for our family passed by too quickly in 2003! It is, of course, of great note that our house construction is still in transition, with grand hopes that it will be complete in 2004. It really really is in the final stages. We had some amazing travels in 2003; kicked off by a family trip to Washington in March so that Joe could receive a national award, the Ernest Lynton Award for Faculty Public Service at the American Association for Higher Education meeting. We had dinner with Mrs. Lynton and members of the sponsoring organization, the New England Resource Center for Higher Education at the University of Massachusetts. We had a chance to tour DC with the kids too, and the whole family was able to join with Dad when he got the award. They even sat through Joe’s short speech! All winter and spring, Joseph prepared for his first communion, which we celebrated in June; Joseph's godfather, Nick Lomako, along with Kathy Lomako, brought Grandma Anne from Detroit, and joined Aunt Sandy and cousin Tim with the family at the Anchor Bar for wings and then a Bisons's game in the evening. The non traditional celebration topped off the ceremony at St. Joe's church. Dad enjoyed being Joseph’s communion class teacher as he was for Claire. Over the past year, Joseph and Carol have continued their efforts at Tae Kwon Do, Joseph has achieved the level of red belt, that is just a few steps from black belt, which he may reach in 2004.

  • Fedcon XIV Ein Lachendes Und Ein Weinendes Auge Ein Con-Berich Von Sandra "Shandij" König

  • Major Kira of Star Trek: Ds9: Woman of the Future, Creation of the 90S
MAJOR KIRA OF STAR TREK: DS9: WOMAN OF THE FUTURE, CREATION OF THE 90S Judith Clemens-Smucker A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2020 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Jeffrey Brown Kristen Rudisill © 2020 Judith Clemens-Smucker All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor The 1990s were a time of resistance and change for women in the Western world. During this time popular culture offered consumers a few women of strength and power, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Major Kira Nerys, a character encompassing a complex personality of non-traditional feminine identities. As the first continuing character in the Star Trek franchise to serve as a female second-in-command, Major Kira spoke to women of the 90s through her anger, passion, independence, and willingness to show compassion and love when merited. In this thesis I look at the building blocks of Major Kira to discover how it was possible to create a character in whom viewers could see the future as well as the current and relatable decade of the 90s. By laying out feminisms which surround 90s television and using original interviews with Nana Visitor, who played Major Kira, and Marvin Rush, the Director of Photography on DS9, I examine the creation of Major Kira from her conception to her realization. I finish by using historical and cognitive poetics to analyze both the pilot episode “Emissary” and the season one episode “Duet,” which introduce Major Kira and display character growth.

Would you like to introduce yourself a little bit to our listeners? Tell them about your history with Star Trek? KERRY: I would love to. So yes, my name's Kerry and I've been watching Star Trek my entire life. My mom introduced me when I was little, and my first Star Trek memory is looking up on top of my parent's fridge and seeing Mr. Spock on this old black and white TV which we had in the late 80s. We were a little behind in the times there. But yeah, it just went from there. I grew up watching TNG and I watched some of Voyager and Deep Space Nine and I actually missed Enterprise during the first run. I was in college and busy doing other things and I just recently watched it and I really enjoyed it.
