The infected person should drink plenty of water and take adequate rest, and may receive symptomatic treatment to reduce fever and pain. In most cases, a child’s body, with the help of the immune system, will get rid of the virus over time. To avoid spreading the disease to other people in the household, please make sure that the infected person covers his/her mouth when coughing or sneezing (if using a tissue, discard straight away); washes hands frequently and always after having been outside, after going to the toilet, before eating and after wiping/blowing nose, coughing and sneezing. Please encourage the infected person not to share eating utensils. Should your child show any symptoms of sickness, please keep your child at home and consult your doctor if needed. Any child with a fever is required to stay home an additional 48 hours after the temperature has come down to normal (below 37.5C/99.5F) without the use of fever reducing medication. Viral infections are very contagious; sending your child back to school before completely recovered will increase the risk of passing the virus on to others. KENNEDY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3 GREEN NEWS

OVER $5000 RAISED KENNEDY GARDEN SALE We had a very busy garden sale at Kennedy on Wednesday. Huge thanks to all of our parent volunteers, Ms Julie and our SEPA team for helping to prepare, sell and clean up afterwards. It was a huge success and we raised over $5000 to help us prepare our gardens for next year.

YEAR 3 BEACH CLEAN As part of their Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry, year 3 are learning about the 3Rs; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They are inquiring into the properties of different materials and which ones are biodegradable. The whole of year 3 and many parent volunteers braved the hot weather and headed off to clean a beach on Tuesday. They found a vast amount of plastic waste which could easily have been avoided if beach visitors had brought reusable materials instead. They sorted all of the rubbish and filled the recycling bins with any materials which could be recycled. They also found a few surprises!

This is a big safety component to our swimming programme which happens in the Summer Term, where we introduce the students to what it feels like to be fully clothed when swimming. The children will also experience basic life saving techniques should they fall into a body of water.

The programme is designed to allow the students to experience how their swimming ability may change when in water with heavier clothes on. For the students to experience the change in the way they float, how much more tired they become, and survival techniques to use IF they were to be in water fully clothed, such as falling off a boat, being caught in a flash flood, accidentally falling into a pool etc.

The students need to bring in the following clothes in addition to their usual swim kit:

• Y1&2: white t-shirt

• Y3&4: light coloured baggy shorts and white long sleeved T-shirt

• Y5&6: light coloured tracksuit/pyjama bottoms and white long sleeved T-shirt.

Only white or light coloured clothing will be permitted in the pool as dark colours react with the chlorine.

At all times they will be under strict supervision the Aquakidz experienced and fully accredited teachers.

Please refer to the swimming timetable to ensure your child is prepared on the correct day.

KENNEDY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 7 1S huffed and puffed and blew the hall down in this week’s class assembly. The scientists in 1S got us all moving with their GoNoodle inspired Scientific Method song, making us all wish we had brought our own lab coats. The students demonstrated their understanding of different materials and showed us how we would sort so many items by what they were made out of. There were a few tricky items like scissors and eyeglasses. The 1S students then became storytellers and captured our full attention with their hand- story version of The Three Little Pigs. Students and parents alike joined in with the hand motions. The assembly was a success and a great way to end the class assembly season at Kennedy School. A huge thank you to the students in 1S and Mrs. Sassi and Ms. Wong. Thank you also to the parents and friends of 1S who came along to support them. It was a performance as strong as brick house! JOSH BLUE VICE PRINCIPAL

1S CLASS ASSEMBLY

Congratulations to 3W for a wonderful, thought provoking 3W CLASS ASSEMBLY assembly this week. The focus was around their current unit ‘Sharing the Planet’ and specifically looking at the sustainability of the Earth’s resources. The assembly started with looking at cycles -the life cycle of a chicken, a butterfly, a human, a plant and the class connected this to the life cycle of a plastic bottle. We watched a story entitled ‘3 plastic bottles’ which gave a powerful message of the way we treat waste as humans. 3W showed us how we can take action to improve our world and reminded us of the 3 Rs - Reduce. Reuse and Recycle. The students all spoke with confidence and clarity and demonstrated plenty of knowledge about this unit. Assembly ended with a touching song ‘I am the Earth’ which they sang beautifully and with feeling. A fabulous assembly led by a class passionate about environmental issues. Well done 3W - you certainly made us think! Thank you to all those parents who attended - I hope you were encouraged by your child to take action! Well done to all of 3W and thank you to Mrs Davies, Mrs Lew and Ms Barrie! EMMA NAVIN VICE PRINCIPAL KENNEDY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 8 This week, 5K presented the last class assembly of the year. It was a great learning opportunity for all of us as they presented a serious but entertaining look at conflict and conflict resolution, linked to their current unit of inquiry. They shared a number of poems they had written about conflict and a range of proverbs with messages that we could all relate to. They presented a fabulous musical poem as well as a fun and energetic dance that they had worked on with our visiting dance teachers. 5K shared some important messages about communication and compromise and gave us lots of take away tips that we can all use in situations that require conflict resolution. The highlight of the assembly was their brilliant and very humorous ‘Spot the Conflict’ game show, which included role play and drama. Thank you to Ms Barrie, the dance teachers, Mr King and Ms Annie for 5K CLASS their support in helping 5K prepare for their assembly, as well as to all the parents who came along to watch. We are sure you enjoyed it as ASSEMBLY much as we did. Well done 5K - a great job! DEBBIE SHEWARD VICE PRINCIPAL
