First and foremost, I would like to thank Luis Martin-Cabrera under whose supervision I wrote this dissertation. I met Luis the first year of my PhD program in his class on memory, justice and the dictatorships of Spain and the Southern Cone. This seminar was an eye opener and allowed me to intellectually process what I had always known but never been able to verbalize. For many reasons, Luis was a natural choice for directing this project but it is mostly because of his compassion towards others, his passion for social justice and because I found an intellectual mirror in him. This was a personal project that originated many years ago and on another continent. Hearing the stories of my father who had to emigrate to France illegaly because he didn’t want to be drafted to the war in Africa and ‘‘go to his death’’ (as he used to say). The summers spent in Portugal with the rest of my family whose conversations always ended up debating if Salazar was worse than Franco, recalling the neighbor’s son who had been taken away by the PIDE never to be seen again, but always interspersed with silences as ‘‘enough was said.’’ Growing up I was fascinated by these snippets of disconnected stories even though (or because) I had no clue who Salazar or Franco were and how big of a role they played into the emigration of my parents and many other Portuguese. More specifically, it tends to the silenced colonial past in relation to the production of knowledge around the Salazarist and Francoist regimes. As a ix transhistorical and multiterritorial study, this project articulates a decolonial epistemology on Portuguese and Spanish relations through a critical analysis of several 20 th and 21 st century films and documentaries that provide a space inscribing the modes of (in)visibility and voicing of the Iberian dictatorships’ former colonized and their descendants. From this critical approach, this dissertation posits that the particularity of the Iberian dictatorships rests on their modern colonial projects as vital for their existence and maintenance of power (unlike repressive Latin American regimes or imperial European countries). This project adds to the theory body of academic Iberian comparative studies and addresses the debates around the Portuguese and Spanish “transitology” studies offering a critique of the modes of (dis)remembrance inherent to the transition process as an exclusionary European event. Through an intersectional theoretical reading of the silenced colonial violence of the dictatorships and its effects on the descendants of the colonized, this project contends that the consolidation of race, identity and nation in Spain and Portugal are owed to their colonial subjects in Africa. It responds to the vital need to think of the former colonial subjects under dictatorial rule as forgotten European citizens or nationals in an effort to debunk the myth of Spain and Portugal as white Christian European nations. There are four chapters that comprise this study. However, the organization of these chapters does not follow a teleological framework, but rather an epistemological one. Each chapter is thematically articulated around the ethical and socio-political dimension of the films and documentaries I have selected that address ideas of foreignness, race and colonialism intersecting with social class, sexuality and immigration. x Introduction I have the greatest misgivings about so-called cultural interchange. This has only ever served for the Spanish to heap praise upon Portuguese writers, carrying out through this means a type of peaceful penetration that must not be encouraged … the current crisis, in which we have helped Nationalist Spain to defeat communism, must not make us forget the immutable factors of peninsular politics.     Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

Yet despite its clear advance, one area that has remained on the sidelines is psychology. On the one hand, this disinterest is surprising, since memory is of central concern to psychologists. On the other hand, the relative absence of the study of collective memory within the discipline of psychology seems to suit both psychology and other disciplines of the social sciences, for reasons that will be made clear. This paper explores how psychology might step from the sidelines and contribute meaningfully to discussions of collective memory. STEINBERG Brown University In September 2004 I participated in a conference in La plata, Argentina, on the topic of “the State and the politics of Memory: Archives, Museums, and Education.”1 the conference was convened by the comisión provincial por la Memoria, an authority commissioned in 2000 by the provincial government of Buenos Aires (whose capital is La plata) with the task of developing a public and comparative discourse of Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung, or coming to terms with the past. the Argentine past in question is the military regime that held power between 1976 and 1983, unleashing a campaign of state terrorism responsible for the murder of 30,000 citizens, with a severe overrepresentation, in increasing order, of youth, secondary school and university students, and Jews. the city of La plata boasts an important university; as a result, the violence there was especially severe. the comisión por la Memoria is housed in a former police headquarters known to the citizens of La plata as a site of torture and other hor- rors. Its task includes the preservation and dissemination of the archive of the state security forces (dIpBA), containing 3,800,000 files as well as other materials, including, for example, 160 recordings of bugged telephone conversations.2 to my surprise and, I must confess, to my relief, the large public audience proved quite interested in the topic of my own contribution: discourses and sites of public memory and history in Berlin. Author: Astrid Juckenack Malmö Högskola Human Rights III; MR106L Spring 2016 Supervisor: Malin Isaksson 1 Human Rights III, Spring 2016 Astrid Juckenack (930613-T005) Abstract The points of departure in this thesis are the reciprocal relationship between the memories of human rights violations, the application of the relevant law and the understanding of what is criminal, as well as the recent trend in German courts to belatedly try low-profile Nazi- criminals. To explore these phenomena further, a critical discourse analysis incorporating historical elements is conducted on the 2015 trial of “the bookkeeper of Auschwitz” Oskar Gröning and the related media-reports. By identifying and investigating the expression of collective memory therein, a shift is revealed in that low-level participation in the Holocaust is no longer remembered as a moral infringement exclusively, but accepted as a criminal act for which a perpetrator ought to be held liable. Alongside Holocaust-focused collective memory, there are further tendencies toward a distinct memory of the prolonged failure of the German judiciary. It was thus found that long-term societal change can prevail against a deeply ingrained culture of impunity. The first article (Goodrich, 1993) is from The Christian Science Monitor. It is one of several articles we have selected from the Monitor because of its world-famous coverage of international affairs—not because of its religious affiliation. The Goodrich article provides a 1,500-year historical overview that is not usually available in newspapers. We have added a few key points to this article [in square brackets], and some useful maps (Figures 13.6–13.8, Table 13.1). The second reading consists of excerpts from a United Nations research arti- cle by Ali Karaosmano´glu (1993) that offers a concise summary of how and why the former Yugoslavia fell apart. It highlights the most important fact about the politi- cal geography of the area: that the former Yugoslavia was a multination state, but breaking it into its individual republics (i.e., provinces) did not solve the problem because both Bosnia and Croatia were also each a mix of nations. In the third article, photojournalist Lee Malis of The Christian Science Monitor tells the harrowing tale of one young Muslim woman’s nightmare at the hands of the Bosnian Serbs. The track's music was composed by James Frost and Robin Hawkinswith the original incarnation featuring a different chorus, both musically and lyrically. However the band decided first to change the music before deciding to rewrite the chorus's lyrics. The chorus was planned to have a fairytale- esque theme to it, with keyboardist and vocalist A Monster Is Coming! Pennie penning the idea which would become the track's famous lyric "What's that coming over the hill? Is it a monster? Originally however, the lyric was used just to fill the chorus until a more suitable A Monster Is Coming! was A Monster Is Coming!, but over time the lyric stuck and so was eventually used when the band recorded a demo of it in Many of the lyrics used in "Monster" are metaphors for drug and drink intoxication; "brain fried tonight through misuse" and "without these pills you're let loose"with the chorus 'monster' lyric A Monster Is Coming! a metaphor for the monster that comes out when people are intoxicated. The original demo of "Monster" featured more prominent synthesizers, with some different vocals, including more gang vocals during the chorus and distorted backing vocals during the verses and bridge.
