THE CLERGY LETTER

We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. T. S. Eliot, ‘Little Gidding IV’

In my first letter for this magazine just under 9 years ago in September 2012, I began with some words from the last of T.S. Eliot’s Four Quarters about beginnings and endings. These lines come slightly later in that poem. They strike me as I write this final letter because I began my time here with Leavers’ services in the primary school, and those will be some of the last things I do.

In the end, I will be arriving back where I started - having had all sorts of fascinating and challenging and inspiring explorations with you all along the way. Some of these were physical explorations - walking the length and breadth of the Vale; many were spiritual - delving into poetry, the Bible, and films; some have been breaking new ground like trying to get to grips with zoom!

Looking back, the most valuable gifts I feel I have received during my time here are the new insights and fresh perspectives we have generously shared with each other during those explorations, helping us to see where God is at work in these villages and in our own lives. I think that is part of what Eliot means by knowing the place for the first time. Seeing and recognising God’s presence in our midst- that God was there before us all along.

Perhaps this is a feeling many of us have as we gradually emerge from lockdown. We arrive back at the ‘normal’ patterns and events of our lives,

but now we see them in a new light, after the exploration of loss and community and challenge that has been brought about by the pandemic.

We have an opportunity now to live in the light of that new perspective. To value even more the things we are thankful for; to let the things that aren’t important go; to work to change the things that can be improved. I hope and pray that you will continue your explorations here in the , just as I look forward to exploring new things in Cambridge. I know I will take much of what you have given and shared with me to inspire those training for ministry. I pray that we will always be open to the gift of new perspectives, seeing and knowing God’s presence anew in our midst.

God bless you in all your explorations!

Revd. Jennifer Totney
