Clooney Rakesh Peter Dass Language and Religion in Modern India: The Vernacular Literature of Hindi Christians Abstract A persistent interest in a particular type of Christian witness is found in a substantial amount of Hindi-language Protestant (hereafter, ‘Hindi Christian’) literature in modern India. Across a range of texts like Hindi translations of the Bible, theo-ethical works, hymns, biblical commentaries, and poems, this literature calls attention to a form of Christian witness or discipleship that both is credible and recognizable and is public. This witness aims to be credibly Christian: as I will show, Hindi Christian texts have regularly rejected a Hindu concept like avătār in favor of a neologism like dehădhāran to communicate a Christian notion of incarnation in a predominantly Hindu context. -

RELEVANT AND EFFECTIVE THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY INDIA . JOSHVA RAJA INTRODUCTION Theological education becomes relevant when theologians start interacting with, and challenging the ongoing ministiy in the world. In order to identify its effectiveness in twenty first century India, a broader discussion on its purpose, content and praxis should be initiated. In India there are more than 60 regional and national seminaries that are affiliated with the Senate of Serampore College. Recently we have held many discussions at the regional and national level on the content, form, method and praxis of theological education in India (2001-2002), As part of this ongoing discussion by the Asian theologians, I was asked to present a paper on this topic in the General Council of the United Theological College, Bangalore on 25th August 200 I. In this paper I made an attempt to highlight a number of issues in the pre- sent praxis of theological education in India and proposed a new system of interac- tive learning that might address some of the associated problems. The United Theological College offers integrated theological training with a high academic standard and at the same time provides programmes of study, devotional life and practical experience for men and women to prepare themselves for the different ministries to which they are called. The mission statement of the United Theological College affirms that the College "seeks to provide students with conceptual tools, spiritual discipline and practical skills which will equip them for a relevant ministry in the church and in society, responding critically to the religio- cultural heritage and socio-political-economic reality of India" 1 The purpose of 'theological education' is to equip men and women for the diverse ministries to which they are called. -

It is always a joy to meet you all to share our experience and get your advice every time we meet especially during our Annual Board Meeting. BTESSC is completing third year of its inception as a full time programme. We have journeyed along with many ups and downs but the growth has been steady to achieve the original objectives. This is so because of the strength of all the members of this Board especially our Master, President, Registrar, Deans and my office colleagues. So it is my duty and responsibility to thank and welcome our Master Rt. Rev. Dr. Sadananda, my counsellor who was always available whenever I needed his personal advice from his long association with the Senate family which helped me to shoulder this responsibility successfully. Let me congratulate our President Rt. Rev. 3 0 0 DAYS Interim Report John Dayal 300 DAYS Documenting Hate and Communal Violence under the Modi Regime JOHN DAYAL (With inputs from Kiren Shaheen, Liris Thomas, Mansi Sharma, Shabnam Hashmi, Shahnaz Husain, Tehmina Arora, and Vijayesh Lal) Executive Summary: The rape of a 70 year old Nun in West Bengal in an attack ona convent and school in February 2015 sent shockwaves throughout India, and the world. “Protect not just Cows, but human beings also,” said Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference. At least 43deaths in over 600 cases of violence, 149 targeting Christians and the rest Muslims, have taken place in 2014 in India till March this year, marking 300 days of the National Development Alliance government of Mr. Narendra Modi. The number of dead is other than the 108 killed in Assam in attacks by armed tribal political groups on Muslims. Desecration and destruction of churches, assault on pastors, illegal police detention of church workers, and denial of Constitutional rights of Freedom of Faith aggravate the coercion and terror unleashed in campaigns of Ghar Wapsiand cries of Love Jihad. Since May 2014, there has been a marked shift in public discourse. There has been a relentless foregrounding of communal identities, a ceaseless attempt to create a divide between ‘us’ and ‘them’. The BJP leaders guaranteed to abuse, ridicule and threaten minorities. Hate statements by Union and state ministers, threats by Members of Parliament, state politicians, and cadres in saffron caps or Khaki shorts resonate through the landscape. But most cases go unreported, unrecorded by police. -

ABSTRACT India has faced the challenge of religious terrorism for almost three decades. This phenomenon – in-spite of the Indian government’s comprehensive effort to contain it – has been spreading its vicious influence and expanding its support base among the conflicting religious communities in many parts of the country. The existing views, in regard to the rise of religious terrorism, suggest that economic, socio-political or geo-political issues (that cropped up during the post-partition period) are responsible for the birth of the problem. However, so far no study is done collectively on the four (Sikh, Kashmiri Muslim, Hindu and Naga Christian) religious communities to explain the cause of the problem. -

Born in Illinois, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He came to believe that God was calling him to India where he arrived in 1892 to preach in the Punjab region. His mission at first gained few converts and endured persecution. So he began to pray very intensely. From 1899 he began to spend entire nights in prayer to God. He formed the Punjab Prayer Union, the members of which set aside half an hour a day to pray for spiritual revival. In 1908 he told the conference his dream that there would be one conversion a day, and a year later over 400 more converts had been made.
