The Documentary Core Application Project | International Documentary Association 9/3/19, 1116 AM The Documentary Core Application Project | International Documentary Association 9/3/19, 1116 AM The Documentary Core Application Project The Documentary Core Application is a collaborative effort by grantors who regularly fund documentary projects to standardize application requirements, with the aim of fostering greater access and a more equitable and sustainable documentary field. Filmmakers have often shared with us their frustration over the amount of time and effort involved in writing and revising grant applications to suit the varied requirements of documentary funders. We estimate that applying for grants alone represents tens of thousands of hours of unpaid labor on https://www.documentary.org/core-application Page 1 of 4 The Documentary Core Application Project | International Documentary Association 9/3/19, 1116 AM the part of documentary filmmakers each year. In response, Sundance Institute and the IDA joined forces to create and disseminate a common funding application to the field. With the Documentary Core Application Project, a small but growing group of documentary funders have made a commitment to a more filmmaker friendly way of grantmaking. Collectively, participants in the Documentary Core Application Project represent more than 5 million dollars in funding for independent documentaries annually. By adopting a standardized set of proposal requirements, participating grantors hope to ease the significant burden that has traditionally been placed on filmmakers and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable documentary field. Currently, the project consists of a core proposal checklist that filmmakers can use to create a single proposal that will satisfy the primary requirements of participating fiscal sponsors and grantors. In the next phase of the project, we are exploring standardizing other elements, such as work sample lengths, budgets, and grant reporting requirements. + CORE PROPOSAL CHECKLIST (HTTPS://WWW.DOCUMENTARY.ORG/SITES/DEFAULT/FILES/IMAGES/PAGES/THE_DOCUMENTARY_CORE_APPLICATION_CHECKLIST.PDF) + FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (HTTPS://WWW.DOCUMENTARY.ORG/FUNDING/DOCUMENTARY-CORE- APPLICATION-PROJECT/FAQ) The following organizations and grantors are currently using the Documentary Core App: Chicken and Egg Pictures + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://CHICKENEGGPICS.ORG/HOW-TO-APPLY/) DCTV Docu Work-In-Progress Lab + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://WWW.DCTVNY.ORG/WORKSHOPS/POST/DOCU-WIP-LAB) https://www.documentary.org/core-application Page 2 of 4 The Documentary Core Application Project | International Documentary Association 9/3/19, 1116 AM Fork Films + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://WWW.FORKFILMS.NET/APPLY/) Frameline Completion Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://WWW.FRAMELINE.ORG/YEAR-ROUND/FILMMAKER- SUPPORT/COMPLETION-FUND) IDA Enterprise Documentary Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://WWW.DOCUMENTARY.ORG/FUNDING/IDA-ENTERPRISE- DOCUMENTARY-FUND) IDA Pare Lorentz Documentary Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://WWW.DOCUMENTARY.ORG/PARE-LORENTZ-GUIDELINES) Latino Public Broadcasting Public Media Content Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://LPBP.ORG/FUNDING-GUIDELINES/) LEF Foundation Moving Image Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://LEF- FOUNDATION.ORG/NEWENGLAND/GUIDELINES/TABID/162/DEFAULT.ASPX) The Miller/Packan Film Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://ROGOVY.ORG/FILM- FUND/OVERVIEW/) New Film Fund (Yeni Film Fonu) + ACCESS APPLICATION SEARCH (HTTP://WWW.YENIFILMFONU.ORG/EN) SFFILMThe + IDAACCESS APPLICATIONPrograms (HTTP://WWW.SFFILM.ORG/ARTIST-Funding Advocacy IDA Awards Getting Real DEVELOPMENT/GRANTS-AND-FELLOWSHIPS/DOCUMENTARY-FILM-FUND) Sundance Institute + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://APPLICATIONS4.SUNDANCE.ORG/) Tribeca Film Institute + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://TRIBECAFILMINSTITUTE.ORG/PROGRAMS/DOCUMENTARY) The following organizations will accept the documentary core application with their next round of funding: Doc Society + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://BRITDOC.ORG/FUNDS/) https://www.documentary.org/core-application Page 3 of 4 The Documentary Core Application Project | International Documentary Association 9/3/19, 1116 AM Catapult Film Fund + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://CATAPULTFILMFUND.ORG/HOW- TO-APPLY/) The Chicago Media Project (application coming soon) ITVS + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://ITVS.ORG/FUNDING/OPEN-CALL) The Redford Center + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://REDFORDCENTER.ORG/FOR- FILMMAKERS/GRANTS-PROGRAM) The following organizations will accept the documentary core application for !scal sponsorship applications: The Film Collaborative + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://WWW.THEFILMCOLLABORATIVE.ORG/FISCALSPONSORSHIP/) Film Independent + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://APPLICATIONS.FILMINDEPENDENT.ORG/WA/APPLICATIONS/FISCAL- SPONSORSHIP/) IDA + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://WWW.DOCUMENTARY.ORG/FISCAL- SPONSORSHIP) Women Make Movies + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTP://WWW.WMM.COM/FILMMAKERS/FISCAL_SPONSORSHIP.SHTML) Utah Film Center + ACCESS APPLICATION (HTTPS://WWW.UTAHFILMCENTER.ORG/FISCALSPONSORSHIP/) https://www.documentary.org/core-application Page 4 of 4 1 2 3 A Massive List of Fall 2019 Grants All Filmmakers Should Know About 9/3/19, 1119 AM August 30, 2019 Oakley Anderson-Moore CALL FOR ENTRIES A Massive List of Fall 2019 Grants All Filmmakers Should Know About Fall is upon us, and money is dropping faster than leaves from trees! Her idea begins as flawed spectacle, faced with governmental, religious, and military blockade. But with each roadblock comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca realizes she can use new technologies to bypass law – and train women to give themselves abortions using WHO-researched protocols with pills. From there we witness her create an underground network of emboldened, informed activists who trust women to handle abortion themselves. Vessel is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who hears and answers a calling, and transforms a wildly improbable idea into a global movement. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Rebecca’s story first drew me in because of the metaphor I found to be inherent to her work: a woman seeking a space out- side of sovereignty in order to reclaim her own. The metaphor manifests on the ship, with practical, tangible consequences that empower others and change the course of lives.

  • Cinematic Representations of Girls Who Participate in African Political Conflicts
Cinematic Representations of Girls Who Participate in African Political Conflicts Norita Mdege, University of Cape Town, South Africa The European Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Fictional films which mainly focus on the experiences of girls who participate in African political conflicts are often caught up in the politics and dominant ideologies of their times. In films about wars that are widely perceived as just, such as the anti- colonial wars, girls who participate in the conflicts are often represented as brave and heroic. But in films about African postcolonial wars, girls are largely represented as innocent and sometimes helpless victims of these “unjust wars.” This paper considers the cinematic representations of the participation of girls in both African anti-colonial conflicts and postcolonial wars. It focuses on Sarafina! (Roodt, 1992), which is set within the context of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, and Heart of Fire (Falorni, 2008), which focuses on the conflict between the Eritrean Liberation Front and the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front in Eritrea during the early 1980s. The paper argues that the representations in these two films are heavily influenced by both local and global political, economic, social, and other interests that may suppress the voices of the girls that these films represent. The paper does not attempt to determine what the authentic voices of the girls are because authenticity depends on perspective. Rather, it explores the many interests, including those of the girls themselves, which inhibit access to some of the narratives about girls’ experiences in African political conflicts.

ROLL RED ROLL Directed by Nancy Schwartzman USA, 2019, English Running Time: 80 minutes Press Contact: The 2050 Group, LLC - Publicity Adam J. Segal [email protected] Educational Sales: Ro*co Films, [email protected] Community Screenings: Eliza Licht, [email protected] SYNOPSIS Roll Red Roll is a true-crime thriller that goes behind the headlines to uncover the deep-seated and social media-fueled “boys will be boys” culture at the root of high school sexual assault in America. At a pre-season party in small-town Steubenville, Ohio, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. But it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered by crime blogger Alexandria Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the collusion of teen bystanders, teachers, parents and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victim. As it painstakingly reconstructs the night of the crime and its aftermath, Roll Red Roll uncovers the ingrained rape culture at the heart of the incident, acting as a cautionary tale about what can happen when teenage social media bullying runs rampant and adults look the other way. The film unflinchingly asks: “Why didn’t anyone stop it?” DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Roll Red Roll is a story that I felt compelled to tell. I went to a high school not unlike Steubenville High School. I was a varsity athlete growing up and I come from a sports family.
