A male student was robbed at gunpoint at the Riverside East parking lot Saturday at approximately 1:40 a.m., accord- ing to a safety advisory issued by the Police Department Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The advisory said the student reported to UAPD that he was approached by an unknown male while walking in the Riverside East parking lot. The suspect was armed with a pistol and took property from the student. The advisory also said the suspect took off running in a “southerly direction through the parking lot.” The advisory said the student was not injured. The suspect was described as being of medium complex- ion in his 20s, approximately 6 feet and weighing about 155 pounds. He was reported as wearing a black shirt and black pants. I spent the summer in Tuscaloosa, taking classes and work- ing. Everyone warned that I’d find the city lonely and boring without my 26,000 classmates. I imagined nights spent sitting in my room alone, watching TV and going to bed early. Like a scene from “High Noon,” I’d walk to class dodging tumble- weeds and listening to the wind whip through the trees. Maybe my imagination is a little overactive. Luckily, I found quite the opposite this summer. It was refreshing to experience Tuscaloosa without the strain of the entire student body. I got out and actually saw the city. Northport became an actual town, instead of just that place over the river. It’s true I can explore beyond the boundaries of campus dur- ing the school year, but when you fight through ridiculous traf- fic for every parking space, hopping in the car to just drive around doesn’t really seem worth it. This summer, however, things were simpler. Tuscaloosa felt like an actual city instead of just a football-crazed college town. But, as with all good things, summer ended and brought with it more students than ever before. Parking — again — is impos- sible, traffic is a nightmare, and don’t even think about trying to eat at one of the diners around noon. Don’t get me wrong — things were a bit boring at times this summer. I missed seeing a familiar face everywhere I went. And I did spend some nights watching TV, but I was never MCT campus forced to watch it alone. Once the residence halls opened for freshmen residents, it was like open season. Everywhere you looked there were peo- ple, and lots of them. Except for game days, I never remember OUR VIEW seeing so many people on campus. Over the summer, I grew accustomed to having breathing room. The city feels crowded to me now.
