Abstract Speech animation is widely used in technical devices to allow the growing num- ber of hearing impaired persons, children, middle-aged and elderly equal partici- pation in communication. Accuracy of the speech recognition or generation en- gine, modelled visemes, phonemes to visemes mapping and coarticulation control model mainly influence speech animation quality, so phonetics of specif- ic language must be analysed to create new „Talking head” (synthetic head model that can produce visual speech). Framework suitable to visualize Lithua- nian language, which includes two new models to improve intelligibility of ani- mated speech is proposed and applied to create Lithuanian „Talking head” „LIT”. The dissertation consists of Introduction, three main chapters and general conclusions. Chapter 1 provides the analysis of the existing speech animation technolo- gies. Different facial modelling techniques are examined to define the most suit- able 3D „Talking head” modelling technique. Viseme classification experiments across different languages are analysed to identify variety of viseme identifica- tion and classification methods. Different coarticulation control models are compared to decide which one should be used to define coarticulation of Lithua- nian speech. Chapter 2 describes theoretical framework for Lithuanian speech animation. Translingual visual speech synthesis methods, specifics of Lithuanian phonetics and phonemes recognition system which is included in the proposed framework are analysed. Chapter 3 presents the proposed Lithuanian speech animation technology and two new models to improve intelligibility of animated Lithuanian speech. The new translingual viseme selection model divides viseme classes of any lan- guage into two parts: constant (translingual) and variable. Technology to create constant (translingual) viseme set for 22 most popular consonants is proposed. Coarticulation control model specified for pure Lithuanian diphthongs is also proposed. The chapter is concluded with practical evaluation of the Lithuanian „Talking head” „LIT”. General conclusions summarise the present study. It is followed by an ex- tensive list of 144 references and a list of 3 publications by the author on the topic of the dissertation. v Reziumė Kalbos animacija naudojama technikos įrenginiuose norint sudaryti vienodas bendravimo galimybes kurtiesiems, vaikams, vidutinio ir vyresnio amžiaus žmonėms. Tai yra sudėtingas procesas, kurio metu žmogaus kalboje atpažinta akustinė informacija (fonemos) yra vizualizuojama naudojant specialiai sumodeliuotas veido išraiškas vadinamas vizemomis. Kuriant naujus kalbai animuoti skirtus modelius „Kalbančias galvas“ būtina atsižvelgti į analizuojamos kalbos fonetikos ypatumus. Kalbos animacijos tikroviškumui didžiausią įtaką turi tinkamas vizemų identifikavimas, modeliavimas ir pasirinktas koartikuliacijos valdymo modelis, naudojamas vizemoms laiko juostoje išrikiuoti. Karkasas, kuriame naudojama Lietuvių kalbai skirta animavimo technologija pasiūlytas ir realizuotas lietuviškai „Kalbančiai galvai“ „LIT“ sukurti. Darbą sudaro įvadas, trys pagrindiniai skyriai, bendrosios išvados, literatūros ir publikacijų sąrašas. Pirmame skyriuje analizuojamos esamos kalbos animavimo technologijos, tiriami skirtingose kalbose naudojami metodai vizemoms identifikuoti ir klasifikuoti, lyginami 4 pagrindiniai kalbos koartikuliacijos valdymo modeliai. Antrajame skyriuje pristatomas karkasas, skirtas lietuvių kalbai animuoti. Išanalizavus esamus sprendimus, skyriuje siūlomas teorinis modelis, kaip atviro kodo anglų kalbos animavimo sistema gali būti panaudota lietuvių kalbos animavimo technologijai realizuoti. Trečiame skyriuje detaliai aprašomi du nauji modeliai, kurie naudojami lietuvių kalbos animavimo technologijai sukurti ir lietuvių kalbos animacijos suprantamumui ir tikroviškumui padidinti. Tarpkalbinis vizemų parinkimo modelis yra naudojamas lietuvių kalbos vizemoms skirstyti į pastoviąją (tarptautinę) ir kintamąją dalis. Atsižvelgiant į lietuvių kalbos fonetikos taisykles pasiūlomas naujas koartikuliacijos valdymo modelis lietuvių kalbos dvibalsiams animuoti. Lietuviškai „Kalbančios galvos“ „LIT“ kokybė įvertinama praktiniais eksperimentais. Darbas baigiamas išvadomis apie tyrimą. Employing this method, a tracked vehicle driven by friction forces from a frame mounted with piezoelectric elements was developed. The vehicle is designed with no driver sprocket, no idler-wheel and no supporting bogie wheels, and the vehicle thus requires no lubrication and has potential application in plan- etary exploration. The frame consists of a pair of piezoelectric transducers. Each transducer comprises four annular parts jointed by beams adhered with piezoelectric ceramics. The tracks are set to the outer surface of the annular parts by means of track ten- sion. Traveling rotating waves are generated by piezoelectric transducers in the annular parts, which generate microscopic ellipti- cal motions at the interface of the tracks. The microscopic elliptical motions from the piezoelectric transducers drive the track vehicle to move. Finite elements analysis was carried out to verify the operation principle using commercial software ANSYS. Piezoelectric transducers were fabricated, assembled and tested to validate the concepts of the proposed rover vehicle and confirm the simulation results.

While doing the project, we will use the Mountain stage in the game, the stage with the most extreme terrain and assess five various cars; Hotrod, Moon lander, Super off-road, tank and hovercraft. Each vehicle has a different wheel design or continuous track design. We will compare their performances based on the distance they can climb on the mountains. Our hypotheses is we want to determine whether there is any measurement repeatability, so that players could duplicate the similar result to prove the playing patterns are less-human dependent. The other objective is to determine whether continuous track design actually is the better wheel design with several merits to overcome the several challenges of the Mountain stage. Department of Mechanical Engineering, June 2017 ADVISOR: Professor William Keat, PhD The overall goal of this research project is to fully design, manufacture, and test a robot for tick collection. The robot will be designed to collect ticks in regions with thickly branched vegetation specifically including shrubs, trees, and leaf liter. The robot will be useful to biologists who collect ticks for research or disease control purposes because it will reach areas that are inaccessible to human-powered collection methods, and thus provide them with a more accurate estimate of the tick density in a given region. Obtaining a more precise tick density is crucial because it provides more detailed information about certain regions and the likelihood of encountering a tick species that transmits a harmful disease.

    Badger Robotic Mining Team 2015-2016 Technical Report¹ Tashi Atruktsang, David Zeugner, James Cho College of Engineering University of Wisconsin-Madison Abstract This report entails the frst-year Badger Robotic Mining Team’s involvement in NASA’s annual Robotic Mining Competition and design choices in constructing our Badger Lunar Excavating Robot (BLER). The team was split into three groups: mechanical, electrical, and software sub teams. The mechanical team explored several mining methods for BLER and settled on a scraper design. All three sub teams worked together to create a functioning robot that successfully met competition qualifcations. Members learned valuable engineering skills such as machining on heavy equipment, computer-aided design, electrical system design, and code. The team will return for NASA’s subsequent mining competition in May 2017 learning from their experiences from the 2016/2017 academic year. Background The Badger Robotic Mining Team competed for its frst year in NASA’s annual Robotic Mining Competition. The team is comprised of members from the student organizations, Badger Ballistics and Wisconsin Robotics. The team built a miner named the Badger Lunar Excavating Robot, or BLER. The primary objective of the competition is to construct a robot that can mine large amounts of lunar soil simulant and deposit it into a bin quickly. The majority of points are awarded for autonomy, optimizing load and capacity, lowering robot power consumption and bandwidth usage. The inspiration behind the competition stems from the abundance of Helium-3 found in the moon’s ground level, which is an effcient fuel for nuclear fusion experiments but is only found in trace quantities on Earth.
