INFORMATION BULLETIN For Immediate Release Office of the Premier 2002OTP0010-000431 Oct. 26, 2001 PREMIER TAKES 'OPEN FOR BUSINESS' MESSAGE TO ASIA

VANCOUVER – Premier will promote investment and export opportunities next week in his first overseas trade mission, which will take Team B.C. to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.

The premier will join British Columbia business leaders and senior executives from the province's forest industry on the trade mission, which was organized in co-operation with the Vancouver Board of Trade and the Council of Forest Industries. The mission is an opportunity for the government, working together with private-sector leaders, to advise international trade and investment partners of the measures the province has put in place to make British Columbia globally competitive andopenforbusiness.

In Hong Kong, Campbell will serve as rapporteur of the World Economic Forum's East Asia Economic Summit, where he will join business and political leaders from throughout the Asia Pacific region. He will also hold discussions with Hong Kong business leaders to promote investment opportunities in British Columbia.

In Shanghai, Campbell will join British Columbia forestry industry executives to sign agreements improving access to China's growing market for wood-framed housing. In Tokyo, he will meet with business and investment leaders, where the focus will be on renewing and enhancing British Columbia's forest industry exports to meet the needs of the Japanese market.

Japan is British Columbia's second-largest export market, accounting for 14.3 per cent of the province's total exports in 2000. Wood products, including pulp and paper, accounted for 62.3 per cent of British Columbia's $4.7 billion in exports to Japan. Hong Kong and China combined ranked as British Columbia's third-largest export market in 2000, with exports totalling $986 million. Exports to China increased 24.7 per cent in 2000.
