~10~ LOOKING BACK YEARS Auskick season begins Analogue switch off THE much awaited analogue television switch has fi nally occurred. As of Thursday, May 5 analogue signals have ceased to transmit across the south west. Locals now require a digital television or digital set- top box to tune in to free-to-air television. On the day, members of the Federal Government’s Digital Switchover Taskforce were on hand at the Terang Civic Hall to help locals with any problems they faced with the change in signals. An information session was also held in Cobden on Wednesday, May 4 to give locals a chance to voice any concerns with members of the taskforce. Digital Switchover liaison offi cer Graham Soawyer said although the digital technology might seem like a big change from analogue, “once it’s set up, it’s easy”. He said a common problem was people’s antennas were not correctly set-up to receive digital signals. Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said he was pleased that the Digital Television Taskforce listened to the community and held the information sessions before the switch off. TWENTY-SEVEN small businesses will share in more than $106,000 after Corangamite Shire Council boosted its Small Business Assistance Program with extra COVID-19 recovery funds. At its April Ordinary Meeting of Council, council voted to repurpose an unallocated $56,311 from its COVID-19 Economic Stimulus and Support Program. Deputy mayor Jo Beard said council was pleased to support businesses which together employed hundreds of shire residents. “Council is very proud of our Small Business Assistance Program which gives our residents an incentive to start or grow their business and strengthen the wider shire economy,” she said. “It’s even more important after the diffi cult year caused by the pandemic. “The fact so many businesses are looking to the future is certainly heartening.” Cr Beard said there were 48 applicants in all, proposing more than $800,000 in total works. “Interest far exceeded what we had in the budget, but we managed to re-allocate funding from the COVID-19 Economic Stimulus and Support Package,” she said. “That allowed us to support an additional 13 businesses with their projects.” Successful local applicants included: • Bellarine Redgum, Timboon; • Cafe on Curdie, Cobden; • Cain Chandley Bricklaying, Simpson; • Ethical Strength, Port Campbell; • Thommos Hotel, Cobden; and • Milk and Honey, Timboon. Offi cers will continue to work with any businesses which were unsuccessful to provide feedback, opportunities for improvement, business mentorship and other forms of nonfi nancial support. “It’s incredible when you hear about the dollar terms of what a small amount of money can then be turned into in the long term,” Cr Beard said. “Even the applicants that missed out were still proposing some great projects and I’m glad to hear that the Economic Development team will continue to work with those applicants to hopefully be in the mix next time around.” For more information about the program, call AGED 50 council’s economic development team on 5593 7100.

WELL, the weekend’s weather wasn’t exactly conducive to fi shing but that didn’t appear to worry many of those die hard anglers out there. Just prior to the weekend’s ugly weather I did manage to receive some reports that covered many types and styles of angling. Fellow fi shing friend Daniel Kent from Apollo Bay paid an annual visit to Lake Purrumbete this weekend and this time brought with him his young son, eight year old Jarvis, who by the way landed a stonker brown along with his dad and others who tagged along for the trip. According to Daniel, the fi sh are certainly on and responding to minnow hard bodied lures worked along the shoreline weed beds. Shallow to medium divers are all that’s needed with plenty of pauses between twitches to entice the fi sh into biting. As the boys were fairly busy catching big browns along with the odd sizeable redfi n, the poor weather conditions barely fazed them. The guys arrived late last week and stayed until Sunday morning and fi shed hard except for when that blowy patch of wind hit. Even the hardiest of anglers have to pull the pin at some stage. Some magnifi cently coloured brown trout continue to fall to hard bodied minnows as well as soft plastics fi shed closer to the surface Fast: Cobden Technical School students Brodie Foster (left) and Abbey Benson were the fi rst rather that on the bottom in three of our local rivers; the upper reaches male and female home in the school’s cross country event last week. 2021E of the Merri, Hopkins and the deeper pools in the Mount Emu Creek are holding some thumping, wild browns.
