Al Baker Assembly #35 Newsletter Al Baker Assembly #35 Newsletter President: Ryan Dutcher Scribe: Darryl Bielski Vice President: Joe Quitoni [email protected] Treasurer: Frank Monaco www.sam35.com Secretary: Kathie Cvitkovac Assembly #35 Facebook Page Meeting Location: This Summer Milanese Italian Restaurant • • • 115 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY Tuesday, June 11, 2019 Please join us at 7:30 pm our annual BBQ at the Zaritsky Residence! This Month: August 18 Richard P. Heath 1 pm Magician With A Paintbrush Look out for an email invite coming soon. Rick Heath was a cast member of, and the principal artist for Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company at the Cabot Street and Larcom Theatres in Beverly, Massachusetts where he worked on stage illusions, theatre backdrops and hand-painted posters. From February 20, 1977 through May 27, 2012, the troupe enjoyed a 35-year, Guinness World’s Records setting run. During that span, the company performed seven times at The White House, and was featured 33 times on the covers of magic magazines. President’s Words By Ryan Dutcher Can you believe how fast time flies? It is the end of the year and we are having our last meeting this Tuesday June 11th. Thank you for trusting me with the club as your president for the last 4 years. It has been so much fun and such an honor. I could not have done it without all of you and our amazing board! That being said this Tuesday we will hold our 2019-2020 elections for the board. The positions are as follows, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Scribe. If you think you have what it takes to be an awesome part of our great organization then please run. You must be a member in good standing along with a national member. We will discuss what each position does at our next meeting along with hold elections. Feel free to nominate yourself and or other members you feel would do great things. Thank you for taking time to read this and can’t wait for this month’s lecture. Something I was taught when I first joined the club was you need to have a good foundation to be successful. It is the core that holds everything together. That starts with educating yourself and others, and that is exactly what will happen at this month lecture! Please arrive on time at 7:30 PM as we would like to start right away before our lecture. See you Tuesday! Your President, Illusionist Ryan Dutcher This Month: A new chapter in Rick’s life began shortly after the death of the company’s founder and director, Cesareo Pelaez (Marco the Magi), in March 2012. Concurrent with two major Le Grand David auctions and the sale of the two theatres, Rick launched his own business, Magician With A Paintbrush, located in Salem, Massachusetts, and began to build, paint and restore magic, as well as create hand- painted posters, for magicians and collectors. His work now appears in private collections from coast to coast and he continues to accept commissions for one-of-a-kind custom pieces. Since 1979, Rick has been a member of the Society of American Magicians. He has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians since 1981 and is a contributor to the organization’s Linking Ring magazine. Rick is a Lifetime Member of the Academy of Magical Arts. He is also a member of the New England Magic Collectors Association. In 2002, he received a Special Fellowship Award in Graphic Design from the Academy of Magical Arts. In July 2014, he was honored with the Milbourne Christopher Foundation’s Award for Visual Magic. As in previous presentations at national conventions — for the I.B.M. Order of Merlin members in San Antonio in 2016, and the S.A.M. Life Members in Louisville in 2017, his visual presentation will be accompanied by a number of stories about life with a stage magic company and working with Cesareo Pelaez, its remarkable director, and his unique approach to magic. 1 Eugene Burger (1939-2017) Photo: Michael Caplan A Celebration of Life and Legacy by Lawrence Hass, Ph.D. August 19, 2017 (This obituary was written at the request of Eugene Burger’s Estate. A shortened version of it appeared in Genii: The International Conjurors’ Magazine, October 2017, pages 79-86.) “Be an example to the world, ever true and unwavering. Then return to the infinite.” —Lao Tsu, Tao Te Ching, 28 How can I say goodbye to my dear friend Eugene Burger? How can we say goodbye to him? Eugene was beloved by nearly every magician in the world, and the outpouring of love, appreciation, and sadness since his death in Chicago on August 8, 2017, has been astonishing. The magic world grieves because we have lost a giant in our field, a genuine master: a supremely gifted performer, writer, philosopher, and teacher of magic. But we have lost something more: an extremely rare soul who inspired us to join him in elevating the art of magic. 2 There are not enough words for this remarkable man—will never be enough words. Eugene is, as he always said about his beloved art, inexhaustible. Yet the news of his death has brought, from every corner of the world, testimonies, eulogies, songs of praise, cries of lamentation, performances in his honor, expressions of love, photos, videos, and remembrances. All of it widens our perspective on the man; it has been beautiful and deeply moving. Even so, I have been asked by Eugene’s executors to write his obituary, a statement of his history, and I am deeply honored to do so.
