Explain contributing and noncontributing resources if necessary. Begin with a summary paragraph that briefly describes the general characteristics of the property, such as its location, setting, size, and significant features.) Summary Paragraph The Chili-West Historic District is located in the southwest section of the city of Rochester in an area known as the Nineteenth Ward. This section of the city developed as mostly residential housing with associated services (churches, schools, and shops) after being annexed from the adjacent town of Gates in the late nineteenth century. Residences in the nominated district date from the period of early annexation through the early twentieth century with a large number being located along and between Chili (pronounced Chī-lī) Avenue and West Avenue, the two main thoroughfares that extend from the towns of Gates and Chili. Six early twentieth century two-story commercial blocks are included and are all located at the southwest end of the district on Chili Avenue. The nominated district is composed of roughly ten city blocks covering approximately 72 acres and is bounded by West Avenue to the north, Lozier Street and Rugby Avenue to the west, Kirkland Road to the south, and Ardmore Street to the east. Contributing resources include 351 primary buildings that are mostly residences and 157 contributing secondary resources, which are largely garages associated with primary resources. The district also includes three religious properties, one of them being the former St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church complex at the west end of the district, which includes a large church, a former rectory and a church school. The nominated district has a low number of noncontributing buildings, signifying limited non-historic intrusion and that the majority of the resources retain historic features, giving the district a high degree of integrity in terms of materials, workmanship, design, feeling and association. Most of the residences in the nominated district share similar sized lots, similar setbacks from the street, lawns interrupted by a sidewalk, and curbside tree lawns, many with single trees. Adding to the integrity is the architecture representing popular late nineteenth and early twentieth century styles, including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Arts & Crafts/bungalow, Tudor Revival and American Foursquare. The three churches are examples of early twentieth century Romanesque and Gothic Revival styles. The Chili-West Historic District is the largest and one of the most intact contiguous collections in this section of the Nineteenth Ward representing the development of the area from early annexation through the rapid development of outlying areas of the city that was ended by economic hardship brought on by the Great Depression. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Description The Chili-West Historic District is located in the Nineteenth Ward in the southwest section of the city of Rochester (Monroe County, New York) and is one of four historic neighborhoods identified in the ward in a 1986 survey. Most of the buildings were constructed as single-family homes, but the nominated district includes several residences that have been converted to apartments. The district also includes a handful of early twentieth century apartment buildings, six commercial buildings, and three churches, one of them part of a former Roman Catholic church complex that included a convent, rectory and a church school. The boundaries of the nominated district encompass approximately 72 acres in an area roughly triangular in shape, consisting of the properties on the south side of West Avenue and both sides of Chili Avenue from where West and Chili meet (east end) to Lozier Street and the former church complex on the west. The nominated district includes the entire streets of Darien, Hancock, Appleton, Somerset, Thorndale, and Lozier and portions of Kenwood, Wellington, Warwick, Kirkland, Rugby, Ardmore and Normandy. Properties beyond the south boundary demonstrate a serious loss of integrity. Buildings in this area, as well as those in the nominated district, were evaluated in terms of whether they retained historic features from the period of significance and the overall historic character of the neighborhood. Buildings constructed after the period of significance or those with substantial non-historic renovations and additions were deemed non-contributing. In general, the soils underneath the Greenway tend to be gravelly or silty clay loam. The entire trail is fairly level, with the majority of slopes being less than five percent. A complete, narrative description of the soils can be found in Appendix F Natural Resources Flora A complete biological inventory of Greenway property is not presently available (October 2013). However, SUNY Geneseo botany students began to inventory flora within sections of the corridor. The New York State Natural Heritage Program has targeted the GVG for a Natural Heritage inventory in 2014.

There’s no doubt about it: the German woman had an individualistic way of dressing compared to that of her English or French counterparts. For the most part, there were no corsets or support skirts (farthingale), no outrageous headwear (that is, the gable hood) and a conservatism of fabric that would have had an English woman dying of shock. For the purposes of today’s discussion, I’ll be concentrating mainly on what is known as the Landsknecht style. The Landsknechts were professional soldiers, employed to recruit and train both local men and Dutch refugees to fight in the wars in the Low Countries - as Hans Holbein – Portrait of a woman in a Holland and Flanders are now called. These German- yellow dress speaking mercenaries and their women came from Bavaria, Tyrol, Swabia, and other parts of the Western Holy Roman Empire. Their brightly colored clothing was "flashy" even by the standards of their own time. Sumptuary laws which kept the English from wearing clothing above their station did not apply to Landsknechts. The Emperor Maximilian was infamously quoted as saying the lives of the Landsknechts were so miserable and short that they deserved so wear flashy stuff. As with any outfit from period, there are several layers to consider if you want to look like you just stepped out of a Cranach painting. Let’s go from the inside out, starting from the layer closest to the skin, the hemd (or chemise) to the various accessories that always add the finishing touches to any outfit.

The Beauty We Live With Just a little more than a century ago, most Rochester-area citizens saw little or no need for parks. It's not as surprising as it sounds; surrounded by the natural beauty that was the Genesee Valley, it was undoubtedly hard to imagine a time when only an act of government might preserve that beauty. But the need for parks, and places for people to play, was quickly becoming apparent. Dr. Blake McKelvey, City Historian Emeritus, explains the movement in A Growing Legacy, "Rowing clubs were appearing on the upper and lower Genesee River, properly garbed bathers of both sexes were congregating at Charlotte and Sea Breeze in the summertime, picnickers were flocking to Maple Grove at the northern end of the Lake A venue horsecar line, and skaters welcomed the clearing of ice above the Court Street dam for their enjoyment in successive cold winters." And so it is that today we celebrate the 100th year of the Rochester Park System, which began with the dedication of Highland Park. Throughout this century, we have continued to designate parcels of land as "forever wild" -creating parks in towns, parks in villages, parks in the City of Rochester, parks in Monroe County.

Nathanial Rochester, Maj. Charles Carroll, and Col. William Fitzhugh, Jr. 1817 The Village of Rochesterville was formally established along the Genesee River, from which the City of Rochester would grow. 1823 Connected via roads, the river, and rail lines, by 1823, the Rochesterville village was a booming agricultural, milling, and industrial center, fueled by the opening of the Erie Canal. 1834 In 1834, with a population hovering at around 10,000 people, Rochester was incorporated as a city. 1838 By 1838, numerous flour mills were in operation in the Browns Race district, powered by the Genesee River’s mighty High Falls waterfall. Rochester soon became the largest producer of flour in the United States and earned its nickname, the “Flour City.” The population of Rochester continued to increase, attracting immigrants and settlers eager to put down roots in the bustling city. The rapid growth earned Rochester the distinction of being America’s first “boom town”. 1850S As the production of flour shifted to westward cities in the 1850s, Rochester’s economy was in a phase of transition. Nursery and seed businesses were thriving and beginning to dominate the local economy, rendering Rochester its second nickname, the “Flower City.” This new identity was enhanced by George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry, the city’s most influential horticulturalists, who cultivated over 500 acres of land into the Mount Hope Nursery.

    The final days of Anne Boleyn: why did she die? On 19 May 1536, Queen Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII, was executed by beheading within the confines of the Tower of London. She’d been queen for just three years. Here, Claire Ridgway, creator of The Anne Boleyn Files website, considers Anne’s final moments and reveals how the valiant queen was said to have had “much joy and pleasure in death” Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, was found guilty of high treason by a jury of her peers in the king’s hall at the Tower on 15 May 1536. She was executed by decapitation on 19 May 1536 – and is thought to have been around 35 years old at the time. Queen Anne had been charged with having relationships with five courtiers, including her brother, George Boleyn (aka Lord Rochford), and the king’s good friend and groom of the stool, Sir Henry Norris. According to the indictments, not only had she slept with these men (as a result of her “frail and carnal appetites”), but she had also conspired with them to kill her husband, the king. Guilty or not guilty: why did Anne Boleyn have to die? The dates of her alleged crimes ran from October 1533 to January 1536, but, as the late historian Eric Ives has pointed out, three-quarters of the dates mentioned in the indictments do not make sense for either Anne or the accused man; Anne was not present at the places at the times stated.

THIS publication, undertaken by direction r>f the Board of Trustees of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, embraces a sufficient number of copies of the Fifth Annual Report of that body for general distribution. Its preparation has been in charge of the Committee on Statistics and Publication, under the immediate supervision of the Chairman of such Committee and the Secretary of the Chamber. It is handsomely and profusely illustrated, and contains list of membership, yearly report of officers, and descriptive sketches of prominent features of the city, together with compilations ot local facts and figures concerning points of interest and resort, busin ess ad vantages, location, growth, population, and manufactures. The superb illustrations have all been produced at the Rochester UNION AND ADVERTISER establishment, and many of the half-tone pictures are gems of art. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Wm. C.
