From the President

2006 promises to be a great year for BABA! We have reinstated an old program of having a featured band each month and already have some great bands lined up for you.

This month we will be featuring the Lonestar Bluegrass Band. (They have a new bass player – come see who it is.) Also lined up to be featured acts are: Huck’s Acoustic Revue; Hickory Hill; Cadillac Sky; and White Dove!!! Check the BABA web site at www.bayareabluegrass.org for continuing updates on who will be performing each month.

You should go ahead and make your reservations for BABA’s Fire On The Strings bluegrass fes- tival in May. The days and dates are different this year because we are going to start on Thursday, May 18 instead of Friday, and Saturday the 20th will be the last day.

What a lineup! We’ve got Blue Highway, Cadillac Sky, Hickory Hill, Classical Grass, Tennes- see Valley Authority, Lonestar Bluegrass Band, Bluegrass Solution and Huck’s Acoustic Revue. With a lineup like that, you will not want to miss this festival.

Check the BABA web site often. It has a new look, so let us know what you think. There is a lot of good information there and new info is posted as we get it.

See ya’ll at the show! Ed Fryday

The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention.

The last thing my friend Christy was prepared for was an invitation to a costume party. Eight-and- a-half months pregnant, she was in no shape for any conventional costume. Still, she wanted to go, so she painted a big yellow circle on an extra- extra-large white T-shirt, dug a pair of red devil horns out of her kids’ Halloween junk pile… and went as a deviled egg.

The BABA Bulletin January 2006 11 Press Release: Hickory Hill & Byron Berline Band at Music City Texas

This year the bi-annual Music City Texas Bluegrass Festival is bigger and better than ever. With the return of everyone’s favorite pickers, Hickory Hill comes the three time world fiddle champion Byron Berline and his band; John Hickman, Brad Berge, Richard Sharp and Steve Short.

Berline’s early career included playing fiddle with bluegrass legends like Bill Monroe, and after moving to L.A. he soon found himself playing and recording with big time performers like The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bob Dylan, The Ea- gles, , and many more. Berline has recorded seven solo albums including the Grammy award winning Fiddle & A Song with guest performances from Vince Gill, and others. He has extensive television and movie soundtrack credits from Star Trek, Blaze, Back to the Future III, and Basic Instinct.

Berline’s band consists of a group of fine musicians with years of experience from pickin’ on porches to sharing stages with major musical acts. Headlining this bluegrass extravaganza will be Hickory Hill, a band which boasts MCT’s own John Early, a master musician with a bluegrass band that celebrates the purest form of American music at its finest.

Hickory Hill made their mark on the national scene two decades ago when they blew competition away in the Best New Band contest at The Bluegrass Festival of the United States in Louisville, Ky. Keeping the music alive for over twenty five years now, Hickory Hill has evolved from a novice band of friends to a reputable bluegrass force with eight albums under their belt. Their lively performances can be attributed to their original lyrics and dynamic blend of acoustic instru- ments, creating an atmosphere fit for boot stomping family fun.

Join the Music City Texas Bluegrass Festival Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 903-756-9934 to purchase tickets and visit www.musiccitytexas.org.

Jim Moratto Possum On The Half Shell GCD-6019 Playing time: 31:35

Possum on the Half Shell is the latest effort by songwriter and musician Jim Moratto. Jim, known for his fine banjo and vocal work with the Conroe based group No Strings Attached now steps out with this, his second solo release. This CD features Jim and friends and is all original material. Joining Jim are musicians Gene Carson (mandolin) Aubrey Skeen (guitar) Paul Kittick (fiddle) Glen Klos (guitar) Bert Wills (slide guitar and harmonica) and bass players James Hicks and James “Bucky” Pregler. The album features four instrumentals and eight vocal originals and includes a variety of great blue- grass tunes from hard driving banjo based style to the ballad type vocals Jim sings in a soft voice. He sings one tune titled “South by Southwest,” with only the banjo accompaniment played frailing style for a look back at the old sound before Scruggs developed the three-finger style of picking we see today. Another cut I enjoyed is “Iron Workers Blues.” On this cut Jim takes the sound in a different direction entirely using a slide guitar and vocal harmonies by Gene Carson. On other cuts written for his banjo lead he uses fiddle and mandolin accom- paniment with the full band sound. Possum On The Half Shell is an album filled with fresh, original material most fans will enjoy. He never strays too far from his roots and the early days when he played with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. Jim still plays it in the traditional way and plays it well indeed. contact: 713 444 7971
