This multi-year project will ensure that all dispensaries in the primary health care clinics of the City are eventually compliant.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, and the MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Sibongile Moselelane, recently attended an event held at the Pretorius Park Clinic, east of the city. It was announced here that there is a R7 million budget for the renovation of the clinic's dispensary that will take place during the 2011/12 financial year.

These renovations will make the clinic more compliant with pharmacy regulations and allow for safer storage and handling of medicines to assure integrity. The privacy of the dispensing process will also be guaranteed.

The Pretorius Park Clinic's dispensary is just one of many among the improvement projects which the Municipality has completed. Other projects include the dispensaries at the following clinics:

Briefing the media recently, Manyi said that Cabinet has decided to discontinue the production of the South African 5-cent denomination coin.

Following this, the 10-cent denomination coin will be replaced with a new 10-cent denomination coin with effect from April next year.

"The new proposed 10-cent denomination coin will remain the same size. The metal content will change from the previous bronze-plated steel to copper-plated steel. This will result in reducing the cost of producing these coins," said Manyi.

Cllr Ramokgopa said that prostitution had become a means for some young people to sustain themselves and support their siblings. He said that another major challenge facing the youth was the use of nyaope and that communities had to fight this problem and not just sit around.

Cllr Ramakgopa related a story of a young girl who had been arrested for prostitution and was later released. He personally went to visit the home of the girl in Soshanguve in order to try and assist. When he got there he found out that the girl was the breadwinner and had the huge responsibility of taking care of her siblings.

“In trying to tackle these problems head-on, my office funds 50 young people in their fields of choice every year. Our target is to fund 100 youths each year because we take education so seriously,” he said.

The Executive Mayor also announced that the City had set aside R20 million for community health workers to assist the public health system to improve health conditions in Tshwane.

“We have also set aside R1,5 billion, in addition to the R3 billion capital budget we have, to improve the public infrastructure in the city,” Cllr Ramokgopa added.

He encouraged the youth of the centre to pull their socks up, as there was no time to relax because education was very important. He said that the youths had to take responsibility for their future because no one owed them anything.

“When you are ill-disciplined, irresponsible and don't want to study or go to school, you are doing that to yourself and it will catch up with you in the end. Your parents have played their part, they don't owe you – no one owes you anything. You owe it to yourself to do what is right for your future,” he stressed. The Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy (TLMA) recently hosted a Christmas party in collaboration with a number of stakeholders and donors for a hundred pre-schoolers from disadvantaged communities in Tshwane. This event was held at the National Zoological Gardens (Pretoria Zoo).

The Academy, under the leadership of the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Thembi Mmoko, took the lead in adopting corporate social responsibility programmes to contribute to the sustainable development of disadvantaged communities.

The head of the Academy, Dr Tommy van Staden, said "Christmas is about giving and not about receiving. It is an opportunity to make a lasting, meaningful difference – even if it is only one child at a time.”

The Academy's corporate social responsibility programme is run jointly with churches, such as the Christian Revival Church, and other institutions. The programme provides an opportunity for others to become involved in a good cause by taking care of the vulnerable and helping to develop children for the future.
