Utrecht the most central city for meetings Much to be proud of Recent figures from CBS (the Dutch statistics institute) and the NBTC (the Dutch tourism board) have shown that in 2013, the received 4% more international guests. No less than 12.7 million visitors made the journey to our country to come and see the pearls in the Dutch crown. Of these visitors, the majority came from Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium. Together with the United States, these countries were also The city responsible for the majority of corporate visits to our country. But not just our neighbouring countries know for knowledge exactly where the Netherlands lie. Russia and China were the countries with the biggest rise in visits, with 20% and 18%, respectively. and culture Of course, the opening of the renovated Rijksmuseum in 2013 was an enormous attractive force for these 12.7 million visitors. But apart from exceptional art, the Netherlands have a great deal more to be proud of. Are you, for instance, into carrots? Do you regularly check the relevant internet website to monitor your stocks? And don’t you just hate these speed traps? The basis for all these ‘inventions’ was laid by Dutchmen. And did you now that in the Netherlands, on the island of Texel, the first Dutch Slow food restaurant opened its doors? These are some, but far from all reasons why the predicted 2% growth in visitors from abroad will easily be realised.

Loud marketing campaigns from the big brands and chains make good use of this trend, which sometimes makes it difficult to find real food that you can enjoy intrinsicially. The Slow Food movement offers an alternative and aims at the preservation of tradi- tional, authentic products and preparations. Meeting International took a trip to Texel, where recently, the first Slow Food Chefs Alliance restaurant of the island opened its doors.

Wide range The UCB is instrumental in promoting the congress possibilities for, among others, the enterprises at the Utrecht Science Park because Utrecht has a large number of advantages in that area. “An important proposition is, of course, the enormous concentra- tion of knowledge we already mentioned”, Meijer explains. “Apart from that, the city has a wide range of meeting and congress locations. The surround- ings are very green, whereas the Utrecht city center is a very lively and compact area with historic build- ings, nice shops and many cosy pubs and restau- View of the Utrecht Science Park – photography Friso Smit rants. What is more, the city is located in the very heart of the Netherlands and can easily be reached by car or public transport. Even Schiphol Airport is close by. Because here, you also have major enterprises, excellent facilities, green and history, but without the hustle and bustle of the capital.”

World congress to Utrecht With these conclusive arguments Utrecht Science Park, assisted by the UCB, is at this moment in competition with Moscow and Istanbul to let the 2016 World congress of the IASP (International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation) take place in Utrecht. “To realise this goal, we collaborate with all partners in the city to Science Cubes – photography Anne Hamers put Utrecht on the international map. In this project the UCB supplies the cohesion and the intrinsic knowledge in the field of congress organisation.” When and if the congress will eventually take place in the Netherlands, it is not just the city of Utrecht in the spotlights. “In the Netherlands there are a great many interesting cities and locations the congress delegates can visit. It is for that reason that, among other things, we will be collaborating closely with the city of Eindhoven, where many technical and medical innovations take place. A congress of that order provides a unique opportunity to let the del- egates become acquainted with all the Netherlands have to offer”, says Meijer.

Complete picture The Amsterdams Museum, previously named the ‘Amsterdams Historisch Museum’, will also be redecorated in phases, with 2016 as target date. The redecoration was divided into three different phases, in order to be able to keep the museum open to the public. Among other items, the routing will be changed, which will result, after the first phase, in a separate tour which enables the visitors to choose from multiple and clearly indicated routes. The basements, where until recently the historical (art) objects were kept in depot, will be changed into presentation rooms, including an auditorium where seminars can be held and films and videos can be shown. With these Centraal museum Utrecht extensions, the possibilities for business and corporate events will be increased even further, as the museum already has various rooms and inner courts where, for instance, a meet- ing can be held in the old ‘regentenkamer’ or a dinner among the 17th century civil defence guild artifacts in the so-called ‘Schuttersgalerij’. Finally, the name of the museum wil also be changed. With the new name ‘Amsterdams Museum’ the museum wants to express more clearly that it deals not only with the capital’s history, but also has a clear connection with the present.

New main entrance The Van Gogh Museum not only participates in the Van Gogh Europe project, but, in the summer of 2015, will also present its visitors with a whole new reception building. The construc- tion of this starts early 2014. The intention is to locate the new entrance at the Museumplein, where the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum also have their main entrances. The open and transparent glass reception building will be added to the ellips-shaped exhibition wing bordering on the Museumplein, and will offer, with its 800 square meters of extra surface, a larger reception area for visitors.
