The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

At any given time a person will find his or herself in the watershed where they live or as a visitor in a water- shed that other people call home. A wa- tershed boundary is formed by highpoints in the landscape, where an un- broken, continuous ridgeline creates a divide between adjacent basins. Each watershed has its own uniqueness based on climate, differences in topogra- phy (flat vs. rolling hills or mountainous), the types of plants and soils found there and, very importantly, both past and present land use activi- ties that have taken place. Examples of land use activities include commer- cial, industrial and residential development, farming, mining, logging, and recreational activities. Watersheds vary greatly in shape and size from the greater Atlantic Basin that extends from the Continental Divide to the east coast of the U.S., down to a smaller sub-watershed – or watershed within a watershed – of less than an acre draining into a local backyard pond. Pike County watersheds are part of the larger Delaware River Basin that drains portions of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. -

D-2004-015 CP-4 DELAWARE RIVER BASIN COMMISSION Buckingham Township Buckingham Village Wastewater Treatment Plant and Furlong Spray Fields Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania PROCEEDINGS This docket is issued in response to an application submitted to the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC or Commission) on November 4, 2019 (Application), for renewal of the docket holder’s existing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and its discharge. The discharge is permitted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit No. PA0052353. The PADEP issued Water Quality Management Permit No. 0911402 for this facility on June 3, 2013. The application was reviewed for continuation of the project in the Comprehensive Plan and approval under Section 3.8 of the Delaware River Basin Compact. The Bucks County Planning Commission has been notified of pending action. A public hearing on this project was held by the DRBC on February 10, 2021. A. DESCRIPTION 1. Purpose. The purpose of this docket is to renew approval of the docket holder’s existing 0.236 million gallons per day (mgd) Buckingham Village WWTP and its seasonal discharge to Lahaska Creek and the existing Furlong lagoon treatment system and three sets of spray irrigation fields, referred to as the Kaplan, Coles, and Lindquist Spray Fields. No modifications to the WWTP and associated facilities are proposed. 2. Location. The docket holder’s WWTP and spray fields are located adjacent to the east of State Route 263 in in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The WWTP will continue to discharge treated effluent seasonally to Lahaska Creek at River Mile 115.6 – 23.7 – 5.7 – 0.4 (Delaware River – Neshaminy Creek – Mill Creek– Lahaska Creek). -
