deepalaya_v8.indd 2 12/29/2011 6:36:57 PM FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK...

When the founding fathers of Deepalaya began their philanthropic endeavour by teaching five children from the slums in 1979, they could not have imagined that it would today become a preeminent civil society organisation that runs six formal schools and several non-formal educational centres in , and Uttar Pradesh.

The youngest of them -- the Deepalaya School at Titron near Saharanpur in UP -- is a classic case of how a community, though poor and underprivileged, can help build a school. Deepalaya merely played the role of a catalyst in the setting up and running of the school, a beacon of hope for the children of the area.

In keeping with the growth and expansion of Deepalaya, we have sought and obtained the status of an all- body that can operate anywhere in the country. It is a de jure recognition of a de facto situation. Education continues to be the core concern of Deepalaya, as it seeks to improve the quality of teaching imparted in its schools. Cent per cent pass in the 10th Board examination at the Deepalaya School at Kalkaji Extension epitomizes our ongoing efforts to match quantity with quality.

In a country where women lag behind men in literacy, Deepalaya is proud that girls outnumber boys on its rolls. In our bid to ensure gender equity, we have been attempting affirmative actions like the partnership Deepalaya entered into to run the “Father and Daughter Alliance”, a success by any standard. It may be a mere coincidence that today Deepalaya has a lady as its Executive Director.

It was indeed touching when Eram Fatima, who secured a very high grade in the Board exam and was selected by the CBSE for a programme in Japan, was asked by a newsman whether she was the first from her village to go abroad, she shot back: “I was the first to go to a school”.

Elsewhere in the report we have narrated the story of Naresh Chunara, one of the six Deepalaya alumni, who is undergoing a one-year programme in the USA. It is a matter of immense satisfaction that some of those who learned the alphabets in Deepalaya schools are now its teachers. It is opportunities that make or break a person’s career. Deepalaya’s objective is to provide as far as possible equal opportunities to the children, who would, otherwise, have been sulking on the margins of society.

When nine-year-old Chanda says that “school is fun and holidays are boring”, we take it as a compliment, for our effort has been to make our schools truly children-friendly.

The Deepalaya Gram at Gusbethi in Haryana, considered an oasis by many, continues to grow making an impact on thousands of people in the area for whom the microfinance programme Deepalaya introduced remains a model of self-reliance. The Chameli Dewan Rural Health Centre Deepalaya runs there with a 12-bed base and a mobile clinic has changed the lives of many like the 25-year-old Mafia, whose gripping story is narrated in this report.

Credibility, based on transparency, is the main strength of Deepalaya which has always been striving to practice the best norms in human relations and financial management. The global financial crisis, whose ramifications are felt in India too, has, of course, affected Deepalaya but it has not dented its determination to pursue excellence, with the patronage and support of all its partners, well-wishers, staff and the communities it is involved with.

I beseech their continued support as I present the Annual Report and statement of accounts for the year 2010-11. Your feedback is most welcome.

With all the best wishes.

AJ Philip EDUCATION

Deepalaya’s education programme forms the pillar of development agenda which the founder members set off with in 1979. The formal education, non-formal education, and the distance education program have impacted the lives of thousands of children who have come under its fold.

The 6 Deepalaya Formal schools - Deepalaya School Sanjay Colony (DSSC), Deepalaya School Gole Kuan (DSGK), Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension (DSKE), Ramditti J.R Narang Deepalaya School (RJRND), Deepalaya School Gusbethi (DSG), and Deepalaya School Titron- have brought a positive development in the lives of many students. The schools have seen many children make a timid entry into the world of academics, talent development, life skills training etc and then take off to a world of empowerment, opportunities and self-reliance. Deepalaya School Titron has arrived

Deepalaya School Titron has arrived. With 200 students enrolled by the end of the first year of operation (2009-10) the School had to move out of the partnership with the Lala Bhagwan Das Memorial Society in June 2010. The overwhelming response of the parents in helping us secure an alternate accommodation left us touched. The School started operating from the premises of the Guru Ravidas Mandir in July 2010. Support from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany added on infrastructural support- desks and chairs, fun stations which changed the look of the School and made it more appealing. “My school is the best,” says Pooja who joined in 2009.

The teachings at all the Deepalaya Schools is not restricted to just academics, rather education at Deepalaya focuses on developing the entire personality of a child to bloom into a confident, responsible and contributing citizen of India. The positions reached by our alumni in various professions as ‘enlightening’ teachers at Deepalaya and elsewhere, as ‘healing’ nurses, ‘promising’ professionals in the Corporate world etc. bears witness to this fact.

FROM A DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL TEACHER

“The Merit Cum Means Loan Scholarship has helped me to be one among the professionals and the FIRST such girl from my village” is what the proud Manorama Suyal says.

Living in a family of 5 members with a meager income of Rs 5400 per month, Manorama- a resident of Bhakuna Village in Uttarkhand, had never imagined that she could complete her Masters in Education and work as a lecturer. The sanction of the loan has helped her to complete her education and work as a lecturer in Govt Inter College in her village. Today she earns Rs 20,000 pm, is confident and supporting her family financially.

07 GENDER EQUITY

Microfinance, Livelihood and Self Help Group Programmes are at the heart of Deepalaya’s many activities. The Project is flourishing, and has made a great stride over the years.

Central to the idea of SHG and Microfinance is Self Reliance, Sustainability and Social Change through women empowerment. The programme has thereby, extended not only financial support to people but empowered the SHG members and the community through an all round development. It has given SHG training to members for smooth functioning of the groups, conducted Health Awareness camps, and motivated people to participate in the Community development Programmes. In order to give a boost to the Income Generating Activities (IGA), it has organized training on Animal Husbandry/Cattle rearing and Food Processing.
